“Does host movement play a role in the spread of chronic wasting disease?🦌
Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a fatal neurodegenerative prion disease affecting deer, elk, and other cervids, has now been detected in 37 U.S. states and 5 Canadian provinces. Understanding how the disease spreads across landscapes is critical to managing it, and one hypothesis is that regions where deer move long distances, as with seasonal migrations, there should be faster disease spread.
A new USGS study tests this hypothesis. Using published GPS deer movement and CWD spread data, scientists built statistical models predicting how fast CWD should spread based on the migration and dispersal patterns of mule deer and white-tailed deer. They then compared these predictions to two decades of observed CWD detection data across North America (2005 to 2022).
The results were only partially consistent with expectations:
💠Western epicenters with highly mobile mule deer did have faster CWD spread rates than regions with only white-tailed deer.
💠In the Canadian Prairie Provinces (Alberta/Saskatchewan), deer movements were shorter than in Colorado or Wyoming, yet CWD spread faster there.
💠Predicted CWD spread based on deer movement resulted in slower rates than the observed CWD rates showing that accounting for migration or juvenile dispersal did not fully explain the observed CWD rate estimates.
This study provides the first estimates of CWD spread rates across the U.S. and Canada. These results help to inform an important management tradeoff: deer movements can contribute to disease spread, but migration may also help support resilient and healthy wildlife populations…”

“Dam building by beaver (Castor spp.) slows water movement through montane valleys, increasing transient water storage and the diversity of residence times. In some cases, water storage created by beaver dam construction is correlated to changes in streamflow magnitude and timing. However, the total amount of additional surface and groundwater storage that beaver dams may create (and, thus, their maximum potential impact on streamflow) has not been contextualized in the water balance of larger river basins..."

Talking lightweight gaiters. I wore my Montane gaiters on tough mountain trips until they got holes. (It looks like the model I have is discontinued).
Then I managed to get some Dirty Girl gaiters based on good reviews. I love the feel and quality.
For the FRC though, I am going blind. I ordered a pair from South African brand AR Gaiters, which I'll pick up upon arrival.
None of these gaiters are waterproof, but I prefer the lightweight nature as opposed to waterproof as I am not walking in rain-soaked places like the UK.
All of f them use the approach of having a bit of velcro at the back of the shoe. From experience I say is not to rely on the glue of the velcro - use a stronger glue and let it dry before using the gaiters.
Onwards... in a couple of months I'll post my impression of the AR Gaiters.

The #Montane #SpineRace is a truly challenging 264 mile race up the #PennineWay. Winner finished 3 days ago and only one runner left on the course aiming to get to the line before 8am cut off. Really feel for the two racers who retired at the final checkpoint about 7 miles from the finish as they know they can't make it in time. For anyone who doesn’t know it, the Spine Race is a bit of an addictive event. Athletes run from Edale in Derbyshire, across four hill ranges, to Scotland, along the Pennine Way. 268 miles and 39,000 feet of climb, with checkpoints every 40 or 50 miles only. It’s cold, dark, muddy, icy and snowy. It’s brutal!
