Weird idea to stop #waste, #fraud, and, #abuse of #taxpayer #money.
If a #corporation's #employees qualify for #government #assistance, the corporation is required to #reimburse the assistance #program for #benefits disbursed, plus an additional percentage to cover the #cost of overhead and collection of money owed.
This would apply to employees working 30+ hours/week or who work any number of hours while holding multiple jobs.
I love my neighbors, but my #tax dollars should not be subsidizing #corporate #profit.

@adapalmer
It seems sensible.
But given it is notionally to be funded from the tourist tax, apparently, I'd think there is a further saving to be had from extending it to tourists, thus spending less effort checking. And then, is the effort for non-resident non-tourist people above the age of youth worth making?Free travel is perhaps cheaper to run.

The Portrait of Flood Risk in Italy - Past, Present and Future, From 1870 to 2100

“ABSTRACT: Among European countries, Italy ranks as one of the most susceptible to flood risk. While this figure is already substantial, climate change and rapid urbanization in flood-prone areas have been identified as the two main drivers expected to elevate the number of individuals at risk. This study offers a comprehensive assessment of these two drivers of flood risk in Italy over 230 years, from 1870 to 2100, focusing on how they interact to increase risk. Using the large-scale flood risk model RESCUE-FR, [the authors] analyze[d] the population at risk under the 200-year return period scenario to provide a targeted assessment of population risk, how it has evolved in the past, and its projection in the future. [Their] findings indicate that while historical flood risk in Italy has primarily been influenced by population growth and migration into at-risk areas, future projections suggest that climate change will become the dominant driver of flood risk.
PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Italy is one of the European countries most at risk of flooding. This study examines the impact of two risk factors on flood risk in Italy over the long term, from 1870 to 2100: climate change and the evolution of population in areas prone to flooding. Using a large-scale flood risk model, [they] simulated different scenarios for different time periods, such as with and without climate change, to estimate how each factor contributes to the number of people exposed to floods in the past and future. [Their] results show that population growth and migration into flood-prone areas were the main reasons for the increased risk in the past. In the future, however, climate change is likely to become the dominant factor, putting more people at risk. Understanding how these factors interact can help communities to plan more effectively for floods and reduce the number of people affected…”

Doing some #poolpond math as someone was asking about power usage/cost.
I have been running the pond pumps (Jebao 20000) at 50% normally. They show on the controller to be using around 63 Watts. So that’s 126 Watts total. The pumps run continuously, 24/7.
When we are in the pond, or if I am doing something that disturbs it and it needs a clean, I’ll put them up to 95% temporarily which is 160 W on the display. So 320W total.
I am thinking that in the winter when we are not swimming as much (lol!), and the demands are lower as there is less plant and other growth, I’ll reduce it to minimum which is 30%, which I believe is 15W. So that’s 30W total.
Ok, so now that we have those three modes we can talk about cost and comparison.
Cost: My power cost is based on time of day (cheaper overnight, normal in day, more expensive in evening), so we will keep it simple and say I pay an average of about 11c/kWh.
Comparison: for comparison, since I talk about my #EV a lot, let’s compare to my Kona EV. Which has a 64kWh battery.
Here comes the math:
Let’s say I never do anything but run it at 50%, 24hrs a day and 365 days a year. The math is easy.
63Wx2pumps = 126Wx24hr =3024Wh or 3.024kWh per day
3.0kWh x 365 = 1095kWh per year1095x11 cents = 12,045/100= $120.45
Or
1095kWh / 64kWh = 17 “fills” of my Kona EV.Realistically, I will be running these pumps in various configurations and power levels throughout the year. I might even only run one pump at times. I am not sure yet.
But at this point let’s break it down something like:
2% of the time at 95% (320W)
40% of the time at 50% (126W)
58% of the time at 30% (30W)That works out to:
95% / 320W for 7.3 days = 56kWh = $6.16
50% / 126W for 146 days = 441kWh = $48.51
30% / 30W for 211 days = 151kWh = $16.61Total: $71.28
If your question is “why is that so much less than running my hot tub like 20 times a year?”… it’s the “hot” part. There won’t be any heating in my poolpond. You swim in whatever temperature it chooses for YOU. 😂 🥶 🥵
Well. That was fun. 🧐
To complete the nerding, I have attached a snap of the user manual with the various pump ratings/specs. It is searchable online for Jebao pumps.
Now you too can have a poolpond!

H/T @matthew Preisser | PhD Civil Engineering, Natural Hazard Modeler and Socio-Hydrologists
“How can we better understand the dynamic feedbacks between the environment and society?
Socio-hydrology models are often built around the assumption that cities act as homogeneous entities, without capturing the variable capacity of communities with different underlying socioeconomic characteristics to respond to and recover from disasters.
In this study, [the authors] developed a disaggregated approach to model community-specific adaptive capacity, allowing [them] to examine how inequalities influence flood recovery and resilience. This framework provide[d] a basis for exploring hypotheses about the relationships between growth, inequality, and community resilience in the face of flood hazards.
[Their] results highlighted] the importance of considering community-level dynamics when developing flood mitigation and disaster response strategies that balance economic growth with equity. Many challenges remain in applying socio-hydrology models to real-world settings, but this work takes a step toward incorporating more realistic representations of socioeconomic inequality into human–water systems while preserving the generality and flexibility that make conceptual models useful…”

A stark choice and who benefits?
The choice between profit for the few at great social and environmental cost.
Or, a decent life with proper energy and water supplies for the majority.
Are data centers really necessary on the scale supposed?

Yes. I think the social cost is real and shouldn’t be brushed aside.
Leaving Meta can mean losing casual contact, invitations, groups, and people who simply won’t follow you elsewhere.
I don’t think the answer is to pretend that it doesn’t matter.
For me, the question is whether the cost of staying eventually outweighs the cost of leaving.
And that is something each of us has to decide for ourselves.

Agree here. And it never was a cost play for any smart person. The cost argument is the worst own goal in the history of open source.
Especially since, after all, open source isn't excessively cheaper in many cases if one would operate it with all appropriate care and consideration for safety, compliance and future evolution.
