We all know there are several #Pubpeer comments showing fraudulent data and AI-generated papers in #ScientificReports by #SpringerNature, but wow that journal's #review process is screwed up much more than people realize.... Worst experience ever. After one AE refused to make a decision after two second round reviews were in, new AE said we need a 3rd reviewer and round three to settle the reviewers' disagreement. Okay. Review 3 is now in: "My concerns are minor and can be easily addressed in a revision." Editor decision: Reject.

The _Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing_ is converting from #hybrid to #APC-based #OpenAccess. One of its motives to escape the #DoubleDipping of the hybrid model. "Although this hybrid approach was well-intentioned, it created a paradoxical situation where institutions pay [and publishers receive] both subscription fees and publication charges."

Update. "Since 2017, the #UK has mandated organisations employing more than 250 people to publicly report their annual #gender #PayGap…Every science publisher pays men more than women. In 2024, the lowest median pay gap favouring men was 9.5% (#SpringerNature), followed by #Sage (13.3%), #Wiley (17.7%), and #Informa (formerly Taylor & Francis) (22.7%). #Elsevier remains an outlier in the magnitude of its gender pay gap and in the lack of progress. Eight years ago Elsevier stood out among publishers, with a median pay gap in 2017 of 40.4% in favour of men over women in its UK business…Elsevier’s median pay gap for 2024 is 32.8%, maintaining its position as worst performer among peers over all eight years of mandatory reporting."

I wonder if this is not an example of business criteria interfering on editorial decisions. Something that #OA2020, 2023, let very clear to publishers that it wasn't a good practice.

2024 is the fifth year after the start of the the Journal of Cheminformatics pilot for annotations using the Citation Typing Ontology. The approach is simple, compatible with the Springer Nature platform. SN could have made it fly. The uptake was promising, but not deemed a success. One problem was (even this year) the problematic production phase, where CiTO annotation is caught in many other problems there.

SN is turning off a script that worked. Setting it up (with or without #SWORD) might have been an expense. But once built & debugged, it's trivial to maintain. Agreed that SN is saying it doesn't want to help.

Also probably saying it doesn't want to automate deposits to all the other repositories to be designated by all the other fed agencies under the #OSTP memo.

This is an opportunity for other pubs to steal fed-funded authors from SN.
