I use hyphens and n dashes.
The social science editors' group I was on in one department complained loudly and at length when the publications unit issued a new style guide which, among other things, confused the three.
We spent over three hours going through the guide, which they'd produced without consultation, and made several amendments on every page.
I used to teach data presentation so was particularly irritated by incorrect statements in that area. The fact that they said there was nothing about the use of colour in charts, etc. particularly annoyed me as I used a reference book printed about 15 years earlier that covered this.
