  1. Update. Another article made it through peer review (at Springer) leaving the false impression in many passages that all #OpenAccess journals charge #APCs and that all or most APCs are to be paid by authors out of pocket. This despite the fact that it acknowledges the existence of no-APC #GreenOA and #DiamondOA, and the existence of APC funds other than the authors' pockets. It just doesn't let these acknowledgements change or qualify sweeping language in other parts of the article.
    link.springer.com/article/10.1

For example, the title and abstract talk about the high costs to authors of OA as such, when they're really about APC-based OA. Table 2 refers to the pros and cons to junior faculty of OA as such, when it's really about the pros and cons of APC-based OA.

It's so easy to say APC-based OA when you mean APC-based OA. It's so wrong to say OA without qualification when you mean APC-based OA.

  2. 🎵 Volume 43, No. 1 of the French Journal of Music Therapy is available on Epi-Revel and brings together four texts (open access, in french).

    epi-revel.univ-cotedazur.fr/co

The article by Mohamed Zinelabidine, a musicologist, musician and professor, focuses on Tunisian and Eastern musical culture and its links with philosophy. Paula Martinez Takegami’s article, meanwhile, focuses on Dance-Movement Therapy. Her approach, informed by her experience as a migrant woman from the Global South, offers a reflection that is both instructive and poetic.

Two other articles focus more directly on music therapy: Wassim Jomaa addresses the concept of recovery, which is already established in psychiatry and psychosocial rehabilitation but remains underdeveloped in music therapy; and Charlotte Guy’s article, based on a presentation given at the Clinical Study Days held by the Nantes Institute of Music Therapy in March 2026, explores the notions of non-verbal communication, synchronisation, empathy and reactive countertransference in music therapy.

Taken as a whole, this issue offers complementary perspectives on cultural diversity, arts therapies and contemporary clinical challenges in music therapy. 🎼

  6. Vladimir Moskovkin proposes an interesting "reform model for scholarly communication that combines elements of centralized access —based on adapting the Soviet VINITI experience to the digital environment— with decentralized Diamond Open Access platforms."

PS: This is the first time I've seen anyone draw the Soviet #VINITI model into #OpenAccess / #ScholComm discussions.

Here's some background on the model, if it's new to you.

  8. 🗓️ Save the date! SPARC Europe is pleased to be coordinating the European Diamond Open Access Policy Forum, part of an international series of events bringing together decision-makers and funders to shape policy and funding for #DiamondOA.

📍 Diamond OA Policy Forum Europe: 5th October 2026, 16:00–18:00 CEST

This round of fora will focus on funding Diamond OA, showcasing the strategic approaches taken by national Open Science policymakers, research funders, and libraries across the region.

  9. @egonw "Once they have critical mass, they will start charging non-zero APCs." - it very disappoining to recently find out that RSC's only #DiamondOA journal, Chemical Science, was flipped to gold. So it's not just a commercial journal strategy (although there are MANY examples of those). This was very disappointing!

  10. @ombialik
I completely support the message about preprints.

But please don't perpetuate the myth that all or even most #OpenAccess journals charge #APCs. Most do not charge APCs (#DiamondOA). And OA repositories never charge APCs (#GreenOA).

  11. We're delighted to welcome UCL Press to the Open Book Collective! One of the UK's largest fully OA university presses, publishing 400+ books, 60+ titles a year, free to read worldwide. Libraries can now support their work through our University Presses package. #DiamondOA #OpenAccess

"So, let’s assume you are interested in the idea, and want to know what diamond open access journals exist in your research field, before you can even consider the quality of that journal, you need to know which journal is diamond open access." chem-bla-ics.linkedchemistry.i

#OpenAccess #DiamondOA

  15. The OBC website now speaks German - the first of hopefully many translations! A small step towards meeting German-speaking publishers, libraries and readers in their own language rather than ours. #OpenAccess #DiamondOA

  16. via Bluesky I got this pointer about The Diamond Discovery Hub from Najko Jahn: doi.org/10.15291/libellarium.4 and ddh.edch.eu/en (bsky.app/profile/did:plc:4zuxt)

"We maintain that all six criteria must be jointly met for a journal to be qualified as Diamond OA."

    #openaccess #diamondoa

  17. But note this nuance. While most #OpenAccess journals (today 62%) charge no APCs, most articles published in OA journals (today 72%) are published in APC-based OA journals.

Thanks to the research of @waltcrawford for the second number. See p. 6.

  19. As of today, the Directory of Open Access Journals (#DOAJ @DOAJ) lists 23,131 peer-reviewed #OpenAccess journals, of which 14,347 charge no #APCs. Hence, 62% of these OA journals are no-fee or #DiamondOA.
    doaj.org/

You can get the latest raw numbers any time you want on the DOAJ front page, and the percentage is an easy calculation. Please correct people who say or assume that all or even most OA journals charge APCs. Most do not.

  21. 📣 Issue 90 of the journal Loxias, dedicated to the topics of the French literature agrégation examinations, has been published on the Epi-Revel diamond open-access platform!

    epi-revel.univ-cotedazur.fr/co

Edited by Muriel Lafond and Stéphanie Le Briz, the issue features six articles exploring various themes from the examination syllabus, including Seneca’s Thyestes (for the Classical Literature agrégation), Chrétien de Troyes’ Cligès, the works of the poet Antoinette Deshoulières (1638–1694), the plays of Alain-René Lesage (1668–1747), and the three novels of Claire de Duras (1777–1828).

Happy reading to everyone (in french) ! 🔓

  23. 📣 Read on Université Côte d’Azur’s diamond open-access publishing platform, and more specifically in the journal LexSociété, an original article (in french) by Amélie Imbert entitled “Thinking Law Through Science Fiction: Law, Imagination and Crisis. An Analysis of Everything for Everyone by M.E. O’Brien and Eman Abdelhadi.”

Situated at the intersection of critical legal approaches and the Law & Literature movement, the article offers an analysis of this 2022 novel and explores the potential contributions of so-called speculative or imaginative literature to legal scholarship.

Beyond inviting readers to engage with the forms of defamiliarization, as well as continuity, that can be identified in fictional discourses about law, the article opens up a broader reflection on research methods, the kinds of knowledge they produce, and, more generally, on the very role of imagination itself.
