  1. Grant deadlines are stressful enough without the nightmare of manual data entry. 🛑⏱️

Major national funding agencies integrate directly with #ORCID. Instead of re-typing years of publications and affiliations, one click lets the funding portal pull your verified history automatically.

  8. Cool, over 18 years ago I worked as a developer/maintainer of a hydrological simulation model at the European Commission. This is still in active development, and is used for European-level flood forecasting.

Today the current developers (who are not on Fedi AFAIAA ) added the latest source code to #Zenodo, and added #ORCID tags of previous and current contributors, so it's now part of my ORCID profile:

If any of them are reading this: thank you, much appreciated!

  9. Is your software giving institutional clients the tracking they want? 🛠️

Universities & publishers want platforms that pull/push high-integrity research data. Built-in #ORCID functionality wins their business.

Your company doesn't need to be a member—ORCID offers a Certified Service Provider status completely free.

  13. Having a quick look at my ORCiD page I'm pleased to see that at some point I remembered to update it to add my most recent employment (even though not connected to science anymore, it would let someone see my career path).

I had also added a link to Mastodon at some point but I need to update that to point to this account:

  14. I had a quick look and found this paper from last year which includes in its abstract, this fact:

"We found an overall adoption rate of 72%, with adoptions rates ranging between academic disciplines from a low of 17% in the visual and performing arts to a high of 93% in biological and biomedical sciences"

93% is amazing and I hope those working in biological sciences continue to find it genuinely useful.

  15. Over a decade ago, in September 2015, I wrote this blog post:

Why I still think people should be jumping on the ORCID bandwagon

This was written a few months before I left academia to move into science communication. Rediscovering this blog post today made me wonder 'Has ORCID taken off?'

"Science has a [...] set of infrastructure for handling identity, provenance, integrity, and discoverability. Systems like arXiv, DOIs, CrossRef, Datacite, ORCID, OpenAlex, ROR, Retraction Watch, and PubMed form a kind of collaborative exoskeleton for scientific publishing and by extension, for modern scientific knowledge. Much as Github has been adapted for AI development, this infrastructure needs to be adapted for AI use in science."

  18. A large part of the economy deals in knowledge – and I’m not talking about education alone. Knowledge is a major ingredient, as well as a byproduct of, any credible attempt at societal change. A host of institutions – universities, governments, parliaments, think tanks and what have you – continuously produce knowledge.

  23. #OpenPharma just published a vision statement calling on #pharma companies to make their research #OpenAccess.
    bmjopen.bmj.com/content/16/5/e

The vision statement calls for OpenAccess to texts, #OpenData (under #FAIR principles), open #PIDS (#ORCID and #ROR), plain language summaries, and patient involvement.

It understands that the goal is a stretch. and distinguishes easier short-term goals from harder long-term goals, while arguing for both.

OpenPharma is funded by voluntary contributions from pharma companies, and considers itself a collaboration of "a number of important stakeholder groups: the pharmaceutical industry, publishers, patients, academics, regulators, editors, non-pharmaceutical funders and societies."
