After submitting a research paper to a journal of scientific publisher #SpringerNature, my e-mail inbox is flooded with science #SPAM (”Dear researcher $FullName, please consider publishing your latest research at $FakeyFakeJournalXY…”).

I wonder if there is a connection. 🤔

Here we go again … Submission guidelines of a journal published by the best-known scientific publisher, #SpringerNature. All of the following information are from the same document:

„Text must be double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman“

AND

„Use a normal, plain font (e.g., 10-point Times Roman) for text.“

AND

„Submit in common word processing formats such as .docx or LaTeX“

AND

„Manuscripts should be submitted in Word.“

Sigh … Now, what is it: 12-point or 10-point, Word or LaTeX?

In Sulawesi the oldest dated rock art with an age of 67.800 years has recently been discovered.

Not only is it interesting in itself, but the openly accessible article is being accompanied by a big set of data published on zenodo.

We all know there are several #Pubpeer comments showing fraudulent data and AI-generated papers in #ScientificReports by #SpringerNature, but wow that journal's #review process is screwed up much more than people realize.... Worst experience ever. After one AE refused to make a decision after two second round reviews were in, new AE said we need a 3rd reviewer and round three to settle the reviewers' disagreement. Okay. Review 3 is now in: "My concerns are minor and can be easily addressed in a revision." Editor decision: Reject.

The _Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing_ is converting from #hybrid to #APC-based #OpenAccess. One of its motives to escape the #DoubleDipping of the hybrid model. "Although this hybrid approach was well-intentioned, it created a paradoxical situation where institutions pay [and publishers receive] both subscription fees and publication charges."

Springer Nature makes clear that federally-funded authors who want to publish in SN journals will have to pay #APCs.

If you're a fed-funded author, then submitting your manuscript to one of SN's non-OA or subscription-based journals, to avoid the APC, is not an option for you. Those SN journals will desk-reject your submissions without regard to relevance or merit.

When you face a publisher demand for an APC, remember what the fee really buys. It buys entry to publish in that particular journal (assuming manuscript acceptance). It does not buy compliance with your funder policy. Compliance with your funder policy is free of charge and you can always take your submission to another journal or another publisher.
