  1. @IncHulk
Very well, Inc Hulk -- if that IS your real name -- a retraction you shall have, and I assure you that it IS both real and sincere:

    1) "You posted that Proton was pushing AI..."
Sir, if you are a man, madam, if you are not, a comment by @the_infamous higher in this thread is the only one I can find about Proton pushing Ai.
Since I didn't make that claim, I feel awkward retracting it, but you have politely asked for a retraction, and I freely give it.

    2) "Tuta foolishly picked it up and reposted as negative advertising..."
I am no more responsible for the actions of Tuta than I am for the posts of @the_infamous. But a retraction you have asked for, and a retraction you now have. (Full disclosure: I am not associated in any way with Tuta, other than having once signed up for a Tuta account in an attempt to migrate away from Gmail, and also I follow Tuta on the Fediverse.)

    3) "(to which I very object strongly, it is a trump-approach)."
I fully support your right to object however you want to anything done by Trump or any of its spellings or capitalizations. In fact, because I am myself a sufferer from Trump Derangement Syndrome, I reflexively object to anything he, they, his regime, his cabinet, his offspring, his wife, his agents or persons he has assigned have done, are now doing, or will do in the future.

    4) "As far as I can tell, you fabricated and unfairly blamed Jen."
Yes, I DID fabricate "Jan," NOT, "TheJen."
I don't recall blaming either Jen or TheJen for anything.
But if I did, I retract anything I might have said or written about Jen or TheJen, and wish to express contrition for having done so.
As to "Jan," though it pains me to do so, I retract any statements that I made as me pretending to be Jan, and I apologize to you and to the fictitious character Jan, that I made up.

    5) "Unless I have misunderstood, this is very unpleasant of you and needs to be reported, unless you post a retraction of course."
Since I am incapable of truly knowing what you understand or misunderstand, I will merely apologize for being unpleasant and strive to be less so in the future.
I hope you will find this retraction quenches your thirst to file a report, and that you will feel heard and in receipt of the respect that is your due.
May we now all, each in our own way, respect our purity of essence and conserve our precious bodily fluids.
    Ramen.
    Bong hits 4 Jesus.

  8. Analysis of over 1,300 retracted medical studies using randomized controlled trials found that six people were responsible for 22% of retracted studies, and a further group of 18 were responsible for another 25% of retracted studies.

Because many of the studies took years to be retracted, their impact extends to data summaries and other studies that have relied on their findings.

  9. Initial questions about this #retraction risk calculator:

What about negative phrases in social media posts that are NOT actually about the linked article?

What about negative posts about a paper that don’t actually link to the paper? (Screenshots, “link in comment” posts, etc.)

  10. 🤨 TIL I'm a leader in (wait for it) "negative posts" about research?
    — including my posts about MY research?!
    — in league with Rob Sica? ...and ED YONG?!!

Fortunately this #Retraction Risk calculator considers more than just our (false negative?) posts!

  18. Ars Technica Publishes A Post With Quotes Fabricated By AI

Ars Technica recently published an article that had quotes that were fabricated by AI/LLMs. When called on it by the person who was “quoted” for the sheer fact that he was NEVER contacted for a quote, Ars did a retraction.

There’s much talk about the ethics here and some good commentary here.

On the latest episode of the TWiT podcast Intelligent Machines, Leo Laporte, Emily Forlini, and Jeff Jarvis talked about it more.

For context: Jeff is a journalism professor and author, Leo is a veteran radio guy, and Emily is a senior reporter at PCMag.

So these guys should have an opinion on this.

Jeff was even handed and explained it like you’d expect a professor to be. Emily was more where I’m at, this reporter needs to be fired. This gives journalism a bad name (one that the industry fights all the time to avoid).

I was a professional journalist for 6 years in the early 2000s, if someone made up quotes then they’d be axed without discussion.

    Why not now?

    There is no excuse! None!

This is as bad as Stephen Glass‘ fiasco at the New Republic and Jayson Blair at the NYTimes. This is just for the AI age.

What do you think? Am I too heated about this? I might be. But this really gets my blood boiling.😁😃🍻

  23. one thing I like about Wikidata's SPARQL endpoint(s), is how easy you can work out new ideas...

I still happy with this one: it shows the citations to a retracted article, *before* and *after* the retractions :) qlever.scholia.wiki/retraction

  24. Now there are two areas where it seems that increased #retraction rates are likely not due to increased scrutiny of published articles, but, rather, due to lower quality publications. I would still not bet that these data will help sway any of the “increased scrutiny” proponents.

  25. Update. A letter to the editor about a study I posted to this thread 11/23/25: "The suggestion that [the lower #retraction rate for women] is because male researchers undergo more scrutiny, propose bolder ideas and lead larger and more dynamic teams than do female researchers implies that male scientists are better at science. As female scientists, our lived experience points to alternative explanations: elevated rigour and scientific integrity by female scientists or more critical peer review of female-led manuscripts."

  27. #today I am in at uni, likely the last time this year, for #JournalClub this morning. We will be reviewing the Monsanto glyphosate safety paper #retraction: sciencedirect.com/science/arti

  28. People have been citing this #glyphosate paper for 25 years! -- "The #retraction notice cited documents made public through litigation in the U.S. that suggest employees of Monsanto, which makes Roundup, may have helped write the article without proper acknowledgment — a practice known as #ghostwriting. The documents also suggest Monsanto may have paid the study's authors."

  29. You know all of those recent results showing glyphosate / RoundUp are dangerous?

And how some apologists retort "yeah well we have decades of data not showing harm"?

Turns out that old data that purportedly demonstrates safety was falsified!!!
