  3. OpenAI's financials leaked? Who would have guessed their AI wasn't predicting their own fiscal doom 💸🤖. Ars Technica spills the tea on a billion-dollar bonfire while the rest of us pretend to understand AI and economics at the same time 🚀📉.

A Chinese rocket breaks apart dangerously close to the Starlink constellation

The rocket’s breakup likely generated 100 to 150 new pieces of space junk.

  9. Apparently, social security numbers in the US were used as student identifiers in SAT exams in the past, and widely shared with universities.

It's absolutely puzzling how the supposedly sensitive #SSN (that can't be changed) is used for virtually everything in the US - you can't even get an offer from an internet provider without disclosing yours.

And in case it leaks, you get 2 years of free credit monitoring, making it *your* responsibility to make sure that you don't become a victim of identity theft.

  11. 🚀💥 Ah, Florida—the state where the weather is as unpredictable as its rocket launches. Ars Technica breathlessly chronicles yet another cosmic firework show, because why aim for the stars when you can aim for the headlines? 🌴✨

  13. I’m really tired of all the anthropomorphic language used with #LLMs.

Current headline on @arstechnica:“LLMs believe false statements even after explicit warnings that they're false”.

Does software “believe” the data you feed it? It processes it, operates on it, etc.

How about “LLMs treat explicitly labeled false statements as true”. Seems a lot clearer to me what’s happening than muddying the story with “belief”. Treat this like software. It is.

  15. #ArsTechnica says "The suborbital space tourism industry is on life support".

Well, duh. Some ridiculously high price for 7 minutes of microgravity (or whatever) is bullshit. You don't even reach the Kármán line (100 km)! They redefined some other threshold at 80 km just so you could say you went to space. Hint: if you have to redefine a common, long-agreed term, you're not adhering to the letter or the spirit of the law/guideline.

    It's orbit or GTFO.

  23. 📰 The underground story of Cobra, the 1980s’ illicit handmade computer — #ArsTechnica

❝In their poor, Communist country, Romania’s computer curious built an underground industry.

“It was a highly illegal operation. And we knew this very well,” Moldovanu tells me…

If militia officers caught [them]… The authorities could seize the students’ electronics, make them pay fines, and could expel them from the university for starters.❞
