"We published in Nature Medicine in 2025 for free. In 2026, it cost us $12,850."
https://www.statnews.com/2026/06/11/open-access-journal-fees-nature-wiley-elsevier-nih/
(#paywalled)There's a lot going on in this confused and confusing article.
* The author and her co-authors were foolish to pay $12,850 for a Nature Medicine APC. They could have published the same article for a lower fee, or no fee, at many other respected journals. They didn't pay for quality. They paid for journal branding or prestige.
* The author says her team paid for the APC "to comply" with the NIH policy. Untrue. Complying with the NIH policy is free of charge. They paid the APC to publish in Nature Medicine.
* The author says that APCs "pose barriers to making NIH-funded research available to the public." Untrue. NIH makes funded research available to the public through #PubMedCentral (#GreenOA) no matter where the author chooses to publish and no matter whether the author chooses to pay an APC.

Update. Another article made it through peer review (at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) leading with two false generalizations, that (all or most) #OpenAccess journals charge #APCs and that (all or most) paid APCs are paid by authors.
https://journals.lww.com/jaaos/abstract/9900/the_open_versus_closed_access_publication.1671.aspx
(#paywalled)Most OA journals are #DiamondOA and charge no APCs.
http://www.doaj.org/Most paid APCs are paid by funders or employers, not by authors out of pocket. (Footnote: The evidence is clearer for the global north than the global south.)
https://suber.pubpub.org/pub/j1jk6hu9On the plus side, the article reports that in field of orthopaedic surgery, OA articles have higher citation counts and altmetric scores than non-OA articles.

New study: "Open access publishing: is urology ready? A survey of authors, readers, and editorial board’s knowledge, impressions and satisfaction."
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00345-025-05928-3
(#paywalled)Not a good way to run a survey or report the results.
* The results are paywalled.
* The article does not include the survey questions.
* The survey defines #GoldOA, #GreenOA, #DiamondOA, and #HybridOA. But the article only reports the attitudes toward APC-based gold OA. No surprise, they're negative. Yet disdain for #APCs only strengthens the reason to ask about green and diamond OA. If the survey did ask, then what are the answers? If it didn't ask, then why not?
* The survey gives a false definition of green OA, saying that it's always embargoed. That's especially odd since under current US federal agency policies, it's never embargoed. -
Update. Confirming the study above, a new study finds that when new #species are added to the endangered species list, the research documenting the danger comes much more often from low-JIF journals than from high-JIF journals. The authors call for new impact metrics to take this into account.
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-00144-w
(#paywalled)PS: There are two related conclusions here. Academic incentives for high-JIF publications lead scientists away from research that might help save endangered species. Helping save endangered species is an important kind of impact that fails to register on prevailing impact metrics.

New study: "[Impact factor stats for] #OpenAccess journals adhere to #BenfordsLaw more closely than subscribed journals."
https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/10753145
(#paywalled)Benford's law is weird & fascinating.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benford%27s_lawI have no idea what to make of its appearance here.
The authors' take: "The rate of increase in [non-OA] journals is much higher than that of OA journals…[&] violations of Benford's Law are more frequent in [non-OA] journals compared to open [OA] journals.

New study: #APC-based #OpenAccess journal articles enjoy a citation advantage over #paywalled articles. But so do articles in no-fee OA #repositories.

New study: When the journal, Neuropsychopharmacology, studied its own articles (a mix of #GreenOA, #GoldOA, #BronzeOA, and non-OA or #paywalled), it found that "easily accessible article content is most often cited by readers, but that the higher #APCs of #Hybrid tier publishing may not guarantee increased scholarly or social impact."

New study: "Within 3-5 years from their publication, two-thirds of #ClinicalTrials published in the top medical journals lifted the #embargoes for #data sharing that they had stated in their original data sharing statements. This shift toward greater openness is a positive development."
