Here's a #paywalled article with a truncated #OpenAccess abstract. You can tell from the title that the author has some objections to #OpenData ("a good idea that can be taken too far"). But the free version of the abstract doesn't tell us any of those objections. It starts by listing the benefits of open data and then cuts off.

But OA abstracts should give us enough information to know whether we want to click through (or pay) to read the full text. I can imagine some editors thinking that truncated OA abstracts are an experiment worth trying. After all, they might trigger even more click-throughs (or payments) than full abstracts. OK, then will they also experiment with truncated titles?

A letter to the editor about a study I posted to this thread 11/23/25: "The suggestion that [the lower #retraction rate for women] is because male researchers undergo more scrutiny, propose bolder ideas and lead larger and more dynamic teams than do female researchers implies that male scientists are better at science. As female scientists, our lived experience points to alternative explanations: elevated rigour and scientific integrity by female scientists or more critical peer review of female-led manuscripts."
