  1. AI is the asbestos of today, it is used in so many places and it will take decades before it is all cleaned up again and that will have to be done with the utmost precision.

  2. “Archaeological studies have found evidence of #asbestos being used as far back as the #StoneAge to strengthen ceramic pots, but large-scale mining began at the end of the 19th century when manufacturers and builders began using asbestos for its desirable physical properties.”

  3. Hungarian roads may be contaminated with asbestos.

Measurements have shown that more than 300 sites in western Hungary have been covered with aggregates containing asbestos.

They may have been exposed to contamination when stones were transported there from Austrian mines.

  7. To me what is repulsive is they think if they let LLM re-write it in Rust it will be automatically safer somehow because supposedly if you ignore all the fundamentals but it passes the Rust borrow checker it must be "safe' ..

It's like the 90s leaky building crisis or #asbestos "magic mineral" thinking building is now cheap / easier where they forget the foundations, waterproofing etc. hidden stuff only to hide later when epidemic of cancers and respiratory diseases a'la "find out later" phase pops up

No, Rust is not asbestos itself but LLM driven slop is definitely "magic mineral" that is expensive to remediate later.

  8. @arstechnica

    This is repeating horseshit hype.

    Arstechnica should do better.

  10. United Kingdom - Urgent Asbestos Warning: Major Toy Recalls Spark Health Alerts for Families

This toy is internationally available but currently I can only find reliable UK recall data.

  11. As state and federal regulators continue to investigate the extent to which historic floodwaters and squalling wind in northwest Montana disturbed mining waste in Lincoln County last December, representatives with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will be on hand April 20 to field questions from Libby-area property owners at an open house.

The "there's #asbestos in your kids sand" debacle continues as the UK continues to have absolutely no effective safety regulation enforcement and token fines even when it does.

  13. Left wet and windy Holyhead in Wales to arrive in lovely sunny #Dublin today. Irish Sea a bit choppy, but luckily we’ve travelled ahead of #StormDave.

Had a wander around the city. Hadn’t been for 25 years, but recognised much more than I expected to.

My partner made me take this photo because it strangely contains a word I unfortunately spend much of my working life talking about - #asbestos.

But I loved the contrasts of the different murals against each other and the sky.

  14. @markhburton Do you know the great works and struggle by the late Paco Puche in Spain against asbestos and the asbestos tycoons? He wrote lots of articles and published some must-read books on the problem. For example: catarata.org/libro/amianto_448

  15. RE: neuromatch.social/@jonny/11632

This whole series of posts reminds me of @pluralistic calling #LLM-generated code the #asbestos of time. #ClaudeCode doesn't just produce #asbestosCode; because it's written using Claude Code, it is asbestos code.

To the surprise of no one with a clue about #appSec or the #engineering part of #softwareEngineering, plagiarism synthesis models are tech debt generators.

  16. Hi @hongminhee,
#asbestos wasn't banned from the beginning, nor was #Xray. Time told. So it may with #LLMs.
As to how productive they are - the data basis so far is too narrow to tell IMO. Some say so, some other. Recently a study claimed devs feel +20% but in fact are -20%.
I have the notion the L im LLM fits the B in Big IT quite well.

We have to re-focus from the means to the ends. What goals do we accomplish, not how much software do we engage.

  17. Hi @hongminhee,
maybe #LLMs are the X-ray of IT.
In the early days used like candy. (Kids got their feet x-rayed in stores on open appliances, so the parents could see if the shoes fit. No kidding)
As experience grew, use was regulated and cut down increasingly. But it's still used to this day. For narrow usecases. Applied carefully.

Admittedly I doubt LLMs are as useful as #Xray. I think it's rather the #asbestos (which made wonderful things of concrete possible but mostly wasn't worth the downsides).

  18. Wittenoom traditional owners launch $1.5b asbestos contamination claim against WA government
    abc.net.au/news/2026-02-25/ban
#asbestos #health #environment #IndigenousIP #auslaw #auspol "It's something that I never thought we'd see," Banjima woman Johnnell Parker said. "There is not one family that hasn't been touched by this mesothelioma and what's left of Wittenoom."

  19. PSA (Public Service Announcement): Not only in the Netherlands, product recalls for play sand are announced. The reason? Asbestos. This is truly shocking. Who the hell puts play sand on the market without testing for asbestos and thinks that's a good way to make money? nltimes.nl/2026/02/20/hema-rec

  20. In the past I have removed and cleaned #asbestos for a job

I think it was one of the more dangerous jobs I've had, we came super prepared and kept to strict regulations

Please don't mess around with this stuff, it can be super dangerous with extreme consequences in the long term
