A Texolex caving helmet, probably 1960s–70s, next to a modern Petzl.
The shell is resin-bonded woven textile laminate: cotton fabric soaked in phenolic resin, moulded under heat and pressure. The suspension inside was webbing and leather.
Produced by Malcolm Campbell (Plastics) Ltd, London. Patent dating to 1957.

Locals in Bloxham, Oxfordshire talked about tunnels beneath the village for generations. Most called it myth.
Turns out it's real. A growing network of underground passages, one found by accident when a builder's garage footings gave way in March. Red deer bones inside. Pre-medieval.

Really pleased and proud that my eldest daughter, Emma, has become a qualified cave leader (in addition to her mountain leader). She only started doing outdoor activities in her 40s, despite all my previous efforts.
My other daughter Claire was her assistant in the assessment making sure clients were clipped on properly for belays. Well done to her too.

Gaping Gill main shaft, a ~100m deep open cave shaft on Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales was climbed yesterday (probably for only the second time) by a friend's son's friend - Josh Jardine.

Last week, I put away all my #caving and underground vertical gear that we used in the cave rescue course, then pulled out #hiking, #climbing, #paddling, and hotel travel stuff for that week's adventures.
This past Monday, I packed climbing, #backpacking, #rappelling, and car #camping gear for *this* week's adventures.
I'm tempted to go #biking tomorrow, just so I will have touched basically every piece of non-snow-related outdoor gear I own within three weeks! 😁Also I keep meaning to post about this stuff, but we are too busy *doing* it (and packing for it, and unpacking / cleaning gear from it) for me to sit down and write about it. Maybe next week... 😇

Tight deviations are not only awkward to pass they increase the load on your anchor. At 60°+, the anchor takes more force than the rope load itself.

A 90,000-year-old wolverine jawbone has been pulled out of a mud bucket at Stump Cross Caverns, North Yorkshire.
Volunteers from Craven Pothole Club spotted it during excavation of a cave first discovered by the Victorians. One large canine tooth still attached.

The UIAA has warned that canyon harnesses weaken from wear and UV exposure. Canyoning's abrasive, UV-rich environment accelerates damage, unlike dry climbing. UV can halve webbing strength over 400 days.
Caving harnesses differ, so direct risk is uncertain, but drying harnesses thoroughly remains important.

For #FossilFriday - another rare Midwest specimen! This Cervalces scotti partial skullcap and antler beam marks the first stag-moose specimen found in Minnesota.
Recovered in 2008 from Tyson Spring Cave the find, along with a Homothereium skullcap, was later identified by Chris Widga and colleagues, and published in Boreas (Widga et al., 2012), expanding the Ice Age megafauna taxa in the Great Lakes region.

Over 100 volunteers worked 36 hours to rescue 3 cavers from Dowber Gill last week.
The cavers planned well: entered Thursday morning with plenty of time before Storm Amy was forecast. Weather turned early, flooding their exit.
