Under a cloud of volcanic gases with the eruption behind us, we were looking out to sea.
The vog had passed across Vatnajökull glacier on its way from the Holuhraun eruption of Bárðarbunga and had cooled, most of the steam had condensed and the gases - mainly SO₂ CO₂ and H₂S - had separated. The lighter sulphurous gases can be seen above while the heavier ones formed a layer over the water.
