  1. Lower Arch Canyon
    Bears Ears National Monument, UT

I always admire photographers who are able capture the details in the darker areas of their landscape images. So I'm delighted that I seemed to be able to do that with this aerial image captured in DJI raw.

  6. Misty Mountains

The clear night has led to a crisp morning, and the mountains are scarved with freezing fog. The still waters of the fjord are edged with a crust of rime. The colours of the sunrise are painting the sky.

10:30 in late November, and the sun is at 2° above the horizon.

    Berufjörður in eastern Iceland.

  8. Everything you see here is currently on fire or has burned, best I can determine from the official maps. The Babylon fire is currently estimated at 104,525 acres and is 44% contained. Fire activity for the Babylon fire is expected to remain active. Cause has not be determined, but the extreme drought in the area cannot have helped.

[edited to update acres and containment for July 11, 2026]

  10. Endless Black Beach

The visibility was very good on that late October day. We'd parked at the top of Dyrhólæy and walked to the lighthouse while the wind was quiet, a rarity that week.

About 30 km/18.5 mi away was Steinafjall on the southern flank of Eyjafjallajökull. Leading up to it from our viewpoint were several black beaches in a line.

A sharp eye could even spot what was left of the Sólheimasandur DC-3 plane wreck, a white dot in the distance.

  12. East Fork of the San Jan River
    Rio Grande National Forest, CO

Yes, this is the same river that flows out of the San Juan Mountains then across northern New Mexico and southern Utah before joining the Colorado River in Arizona above the Grand Canyon.

  14. Cyan And Peach

09:00 in late February. The sun rose at 08:45 in the east-south-east and won't appear higher than 15° above the horizon all day.

A heavy crust of ice has formed over the lake, then snow has fallen across the surface. Only a small central patch has been cleared by the wind; this is reflecting the subtle colours of dawn.

For everyone suffering in this heatwave, some photographic respite. Másvatn lake, Þingeyjarsveit, north-eastern Iceland.

  16. Rio de los Piños
    Carson National Forest, NM

Looking from above at the point where the small river flows out of a rocky canyon into a wider valley in far northern New Mexico. This is just below the "Green Chile Waters" posted two days ago.

  18. Head of the Canyon
    Vally of the Gods, UT

A view of the features found around the area where the road passes closest to the canyon. Wasn't ideal weather for photography.

  20. Moki Dugway
    Bears Ears National Monument, UT

I'd already driven part way down when I leaned out my window to take this photo. Valley of the Gods is just out of frame to the left. You can just see the edge of Monument Valley through the haze on the horizon to the right.

There is so much hype and influencer scare mongering about this relatively easy and fairly wide gravel road. Yes, it clings to the cliff, and yes it's a long way down, but I've seen full sized RVs pulling trailers make it up with no problems.

  22. Church In The Wide Valley

The magnificent mountains are wearing a cloak of snow. The withering grasslands are turned to gold by the low sun.

Standing proud is a small white church, dwarfed by the mighty landscape around it. The silence is only broken by the chatter of a small stream.

Mid-November. Heydalakirkja in Breiðdalur ("wide valley"), Fjarðabyggð, eastern Iceland.

  25. Black Beach

The fine volcanic sand is like ground glass, soft and almost frictionless when dry, hard as concrete when wet. Under the water, it becomes suspended particles with little traction which is what makes it so dangerous.

Having said that, it's undeniably beautiful.

October: The view from Dyrhólaeyjarviti (door hill island lighthouse) looking down onto Dyrhólafjara (door hill beach) near Vík í Mýrdal in southern Iceland.

  27. Cathedral Cliffs
    Shoshone National Forest, WY

Hazy due to wildfires in surrounding states.

  28. Cyan And Pink

The early sunlight has yet to touch the ground. Night cold is still gripping the town, and the mountains wait for any warmth.

The promise of daylight is softly touching the clouds, colouring them peach and pink.

    Sunrise at 9am in mid-November, less than 40 km from the Arctic Circle. 66° 08' 55.3" N, 18° 54' 42.1" W in Siglufjörður, north-eastern Iceland.

  30. Rainbow Canyon

It had been a miserable drizzly day. Short bursts of sunshine had provided fleeting rainbows in the showers, but it wasn't until we reached our target for the day - Kárahnjúkavirkjun¹ - that the sun came out at last.

The rain was moving away, I walked to the centre of the dam and caught this brief wonder emerging from the throat of the canyon.

    Magical.

  34. Nambe Lake, my favorite hike in the Sangres. I didn't get to go last year -- wasn't up to the climb -- but this year I should be okay, and I'm looking forward to it once all the snow clears.

  36. Antelope House Ruin
    Canyon de Chelly, AZ

I chose this wide shot as it's #SaturdayScenery rather than a telephoto view of the ruins itself, which can be seen along the bottom edge of the big cliff at right.
