#Minnesota governor signs order to stop any #mining efforts in #BoundaryWaters #Wilderness
August 18, 2026
ELY, Minn. (AP) — "Minnesota Gov. #TimWalz on Tuesday suspended state work on proposed mining projects in the #BoundaryWatersCanoeArea Wilderness, four months after Congress and President Donald Trump’s administration lifted a federal ban.
"The cherished wild area stretches for about 150 miles (about 240 kilometers) in the #SuperiorNationalForest along Minnesota’s border with #Canada. Thousands of canoeists, kayakers and campers explore the wilderness each year.
" 'It’s our duty as Minnesotans to ensure the sacred place remains wild, pristine and unharmed,' Walz, a Democrat, said.
"#TwinMetalsMinnesotaLLC, a subsidiary of #Chile -based #AntofagastaMinerals, has been seeking to mine for #copper, #nickel and other precious metals in the #NationalForest since 2019. It insists it can be done so no waste rock is stored above ground, eliminating a potential source of acid.
"The canoe area lies within the national forest just downstream from the mine site, raising concerns that digging could cause pollution.
"In April, #Trump signed a resolution approved by Congress that lifts a 2023 federal moratorium on mining in the forest. He said it would create jobs and boost the #MiningIndustry.
:Walz’s order says Minnesota regulators will not participate as a cooperating agency in any federal environmental review of a nonferrous mining project in the #RainyRiver watershed, which is linked to #BoundaryWaters."

At least some of the aircraft were DIVERTED from efforts to contain #wildfires elsewhere in the state‼️‼️, according to 2 agency officials & the Post analysis of the flight paths.
Communications reviewed by The Washington Post sent during the response to the blaze corroborate that Boren personally directed #USFS staff to address the Cabin Creek Fire.

In total, about 9 aircraft, including helicopters, air tankers & tactical planes, responded to the fire ‼️ on July 12, acc/to an analysis of flight paths, part of an effort that lasted a few hours & cost nearly $115,000 in federal money [ #TaxpayersMoney ] ‼️. The analysis found that these assets traveled from across the West to Idaho’s Alturas Lake, near where the Cabin Creek Fire was burning.

In those calls, according to the #USFS official with knowledge of the situation, Boren pushed for more aircraft to fight the fire even though “it was easily accessible by ground,” the official said.
He “was on the phone calling people that day asking why there weren’t more resources on the fire & when there was going to be more,” the official said.#law #AbuseOfPower #billionaires #Trump #RichWhiteMalePrivilege #NationalForest #PublicLands #wildfires #ClimateChange

Two other agency officials said he called those offices, including at least once in the middle of the night. [must be nice to have government resources at your personal disposal for your private property]
Six current & former #USFS officials said the response was far greater than what is typical for a fire of that scale that did not pose a significant threat to life or property.

On July 12, what began as an unattended campfire grew into the Cabin Creek Fire, which spread to a few acres on a ridge in the Sawtooth #NationalForest. While at his mega-ranch, Boren called #USFS ofcls in the Sawtooth National Forest at the regional level & national operations in DC multiple times to question why there weren’t more aircraft battling the fire, acc/to one Forest Service official….This ofcl…said Boren asked when more assets would arrive.

Boren, a #tech #billionaire & #Trump appointee, oversees about 200 million acres of #NationalForest & #PublicLands. He also owns thousands of acres in #Idaho, including the 480-acre Hell Roaring Ranch situated within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. And before his current role, Boren had clashed with the #USFS numerous times over the years.

Of course he did.
Undersecretary of Agriculture for Natural Resources and Environment [ #USDA #NRE ] Michael Boren, who oversees the US Forest Service [ #USFS ], asked agency staff last month to escalate the amount of aircraft at a small 7-acre #wildfire that had started near his mega-ranch in #Idaho’s Sawtooth National Forest, acc/to 2 Forest Service ofcls familiar with the matter.

Hype for the Future 101E: Forested Areas of Brown County, Indiana
Overview The surrounding areas associated with Brown County, Indiana, are often identified by the Hoosier National Forest, the Yellowwood State Forest, and Brown County State Park. While the northern part of the county is often less protected than the areas further south, the canopy and related features of the rolling hills remain fairly similar nonetheless, with the un-glaciated terrain and features relatively similar to the foothills associated with the Appalachian Mountains. -
