The Iron Horse Regional Trail is one of the Bay Area's newest rail-to-trail conversions, stretching 32 miles from Concord to Livermore. It follows a Southern Pacific Railroad right of way that was established in 1891 and abandoned in 1977. Many possible uses for the right of way were proposed over the years, including a BART extension; dedicating this valuable land to a walking/biking trail was controversial. It's now one of the most heavily used urban trails in the Bay Area.
These pictures are from where the trail crosses Prospect Avenue in downtown Danville and is easily accessible. The city opted to preserve the original 1891 train station as a museum.

The Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail winds its way through the great suburban outback of Contra Costa County, California. It was built in 1976 on the right-of-way of the Sacramento Northern Railway, a line built to shipped logged redwood from Oakland to Sacramento. It was one of the first rail-to-trail conversions in the U.S.
