Finished teaching #QGIS for #Groundwater Applications to the #ErasmusMundus GroundWatCh MSc students at IST in Lisbon! Despite very hot days in classrooms without AC, the group worked hard and produced great groundwater and surface water maps.

Today, the students received their official QGIS certificates.

Great closing session with @timlinux, presenting on QGIS behind the scenes. Looking forward to seeing the students again at #IHEDelft in 6 months!

Heard about geoparquet a while ago and today I gave it a try. I discovered that I can create geoparquet files using geopandas.to_parquet() 😎 But I also discovered that gdal from ubuntuGis does not recognize the file type 😢 So I can´t look at the file in Qgis nor do ogrinfo on it.

I'm installing gdal from ubuntugis-unstable. Am I doing something wrong? Or GDAL / Qgis from ubuntuGIS / debianGIS does not support parquet?

I’ve almost finished it!
I’ve uploaded all eight parts of “The Greenness of Calgary: A Community-Level Atlas (2025). Contrast Color Edition” to #Gumroad

Each part is a separate PDF using the “classic” high-contrast NDVI palette, optimized for visual interpretation of vegetation patterns. (The soft green palette will come later.)

🎉 A small milestone for my hydrogeochemistry monograph about #SvystunovaGully

Today, my Zenodo record passed 1,500 downloads across both released versions — something I never expected when I began this project as a personal, curiosity-driven exploration.

It’s an independent study on groundwater–rock interaction, technogenic metasomatism, and carbonate–water equilibria, based largely on PHREEQC thermodynamic modelling and geospatial data.

I’m grateful to everyone who took an interest, skimmed, downloaded, or shared it.
Your attention gives this work a life I didn’t imagine it would ever have.

❗ And one more thing: in the monograph’s preamble I explicitly thank the developers of free and open-source software. Without their tools — R, PHREEQC, QGIS, LaTeX, Linux, JabRef and many others — this research would simply not have been possible.

Result of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) created from combined median composites of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 imagery — somewhere in the Sudanese desert.

This PCA composite brings out contrasts between lithologies, structural domains, drainage patterns, and surface materials, highlighting features that are nearly invisible in standard RGB representations.

And yes — it also happens to look stunning.

My experiment with land-cover classification for Calgary using satellite imagery and with a machine-learning model trained on data from another continent.

The results turned out surprisingly good — most classes transferred almost perfectly.
The only noticeable shift was the Forest class: tree and shrub vegetation in the source region differs from Calgary’s, so the model mapped it conservatively here.

Still, the general structure of the landscape was captured very well, and community-level land-cover profiles look consistent.

💧 Aggressive groundwater and the long memory of contamination

Even after more than a decade of monitoring, the groundwater in this carbonate aquifer remains undersaturated with respect to calcite — consistently showing negative SI values across nearly all observation wells.

This means that the system is still chemically aggressive toward limestone, slowly dissolving the host rock.
The impoundment, operating since 1976, continues to influence the aquifer — with the geometry of possible subsurface voids still uncertain to this day.

🌎 Mapping dominant chemical speciation in a polluted carbonate aquifer

In my recent modeling work, I modeled the dominant forms of element speciation in groundwater within a carbonate system.

Beyond pure geochemical curiosity, this approach provides a practical lens:
– it reveals where mineral precipitation is most probable,
– and helps identify zones where remediation can be most effective.

💻 Combining thermodynamic modeling (PHREEQC) with spatial analysis in R and QGIS turns subsurface processes into actionable insights for water-quality management and contamination mitigation.

One question for the #gis community on #ubuntu derivatives. I wanted to load #geoparquet into a #qgis project. Didn't work with any ppa version or #flatpak so far. Seams like being due to #gdal not being compiled with this option. Got used to it when still had a single Win10 machine left, as it fast and tiny data footprint. How do you get geoparquet running? Compile gdal yourself or is there a package already including geoparquet?
