@ploopy several visual apps support panning by holding the spacebar then moving to the mouse.
To support this on my #ploopy Adept trackball, I updated the firmware so that the when I hold the button I use for "Copy", it registers like a spacebar making for a convenient way to pan with the trackball in #qgis and other apps.

...as part of preparing the mailing list for the flyer for my internship, i downloaded qgis and started playing with it for the first time.
i was surprised that it was actually quite intuitive to use! as you all probably know, FOSS is very hit or miss, and so far i'm very impressed with qgis!
i downloaded zip code shapefiles (hoping that i could somehow use zipcodes to get records from the state property tax site - no such luck).
i downloaded shapefiles for all the parcels in hawai'i, which were very helpful, but they only have TMK numbers, no addresses.
i did some intersect queries to get all parcels in a specific zip code.
i exported specific zip code layers i made to shapefile and uploaded them to the cesspool tool (https://seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu/app2/) to get cesspool data by zip code.
now if only i could upload geometry to https://qpublic.schneidercorp.com/Application.aspx?AppID=1048&LayerID=23618&PageTypeID=1 ! 😅 ( i even asked my neighbor who retired from the property tax office if i could do any batch searches and she said no. you can enter incomplete parcel numbers, which are roughly geographic and return a narrower geographic range the more numbers you put in, but the maximum output is 1000 records, so it would get quite tedious. i tried entering comma-separated parcel numbers and space-separated parcel numbers into the search, but that didn't go. i also tried using * for wildcards in the search bar, but no go. i also messed with the urls to see if i could enter multiple parcel numbers into the url's to get multiple records. couldn't get that to work either. you can draw a polygon on the map and get records for all the parcels in the polygon (up to 1000 records), but our island isn't on any kind of grid, so using my hands to make polygons and hoping that they'll have less than 1000 records seems like madness.)
