Finished teaching #QGIS for #Groundwater Applications to the #ErasmusMundus GroundWatCh MSc students at IST in Lisbon! Despite very hot days in classrooms without AC, the group worked hard and produced great groundwater and surface water maps.
Today, the students received their official QGIS certificates.
Great closing session with @timlinux, presenting on QGIS behind the scenes. Looking forward to seeing the students again at #IHEDelft in 6 months!

🚀 The new edition of the book #Geomorphometry is almost available. It’s not open access, but I’m glad to see a strong shift toward #OpenSource tools like #QGIS, #PCRaster, #GRASS, #Whitebox and Python/R packages. Happy I could contribute to this through my chapter on QGIS and PCRaster!

Back in 1976, Christo and Jeanne-Claude worked with local communities and volunteers in Sonoma County and Marin County to complete Running Fence (24.5 miles).
It was only installed for two weeks, before it was completely removed and landscape restored.
This year marks the project's 50th anniversary. I was able to update my Running Fence project in QGIS with another set of source maps which represent the final route.

I created this map six years ago. It was one of my first projects using #QGIS at the time. I wanted to georeference the old source maps to the current landscape.
The orange vector line defines the route of the
#Christo and #JeanneClaude Running Fence , which was a project they completed in the summer of 1976, lasting two weeks.#RunningFence started in Cotati, and wound through the landscapes of #SonomaCounty and #MarinCounty.
2026 marks the 50th year since the project was created.

I've been adding historical information and documents into Logseq for the past few weeks. I just add a little bit each evening, and create back-links, and proofread things. It parallels nicely with my work in QGIS.
What a really interesting learning project for me. Fun stuff.
Here is what the "Graph View" looks like so far.

Result of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) created from combined median composites of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 imagery — somewhere in the Sudanese desert.
This PCA composite brings out contrasts between lithologies, structural domains, drainage patterns, and surface materials, highlighting features that are nearly invisible in standard RGB representations.
And yes — it also happens to look stunning.

Exploring large-scale landscape structures with a simple Principal Component Analysis (PCA) applied to a MODIS composite.
The PCA reveals striking contrasts in surface materials, vegetation patterns, and terrain transitions across western Canada — from the Rocky Mountains into the prairies and the Canadian Shield.
Even with moderate-resolution MODIS data, spectral variability produces a surprisingly rich view of regional geography and geomorphology.#RemoteSensing #EarthObservation #Geology #PCA #MODIS #OpenData #GIS #QGIS #Geomorphology #Geoscience #RStats #Lithology #GeoDataArt #GeoSpectralArt #BorealForest #Taiga #Canada #Alberta

Result of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based on combined median composites of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery — somewhere in the desert of Sudan.
The PCA highlights contrasts between different lithologies, structural domains, and surface materials, revealing subtle geological features that are hard to distinguish in standard RGB composites.
And yes — it also looks simply beautiful.

My experiment with land-cover classification for Calgary using satellite imagery and with a machine-learning model trained on data from another continent.
The results turned out surprisingly good — most classes transferred almost perfectly.
The only noticeable shift was the Forest class: tree and shrub vegetation in the source region differs from Calgary’s, so the model mapped it conservatively here.Still, the general structure of the landscape was captured very well, and community-level land-cover profiles look consistent.

Just wrapped up teaching #QGIS for Hydrological Applications to #ErasmusMundus #FloodRiskManagement MSc students at @tudresden's beautiful #Tharandt campus 🍁.
Students completed 7 lessons based on the book I co-authored with @geomenke, earned QGIS certificates, and battled daily Kahoot quizzes for swag and a signed copy of the book! Open source GIS powering future water experts! 💧 #Hydrology #QGISHydro #GIS #OSGeo #PCRaster #IHEDelft

For MLK day here in the US, I'm going to be doing some equity #mapping work with #OpenStreetMap #OpenTripPlanner #QGIS and mabe some #Nodejs and posting some updates throughout the day in this thread. If that's your jam, follow along.
Otherwise, you may want to mute me for 24 hours, because this may get noisy. 🧵

Day 21 of the #30DayMapChallenge was #Raster.
It occurred to me recently that I haven't done a lot of playing with #QGIS for this year's challenge, so I decided to combine that with this data of the #MarianaTrench and create a #contour map.
It took me a few tries as the trench is so vast that I had to play around a lot with the intervals at which contours were shown in order to have a map that produced anything readable.
Most maps have contour lines for every ten metres, with the 50 and 100m intervals slightly thicker. The pink image below has lines only at every 100m, and had to be zoomed in quite far before you can distinguish any features. The other image has purple contours at every 500m, and white contours at every 1km, which just highlights how deep the trench actually is.
What a fascinating area of the planet.
