  1. @defuneste If you ever need it again: Virtual Layers are your friend

  2. Trying out #QGIS 4.2.x, there are many convenient features, but a few plugins I frequently use aren't available yet. Stick with QGIS 3.44.x LTS for now.

  3. Isnt it harder to find in-depth, information on geospatial tech, which is why I want to share a fantastic independent resource:

    rsandgis.me/

Run by a geospatial expert, its an blog currently focused heavily on RS and GIS, machine learning and modern spatial data workflows. It completely bridges the gap between Earth sciences and modern programming.

Back in 1976, Christo and Jeanne-Claude worked with local communities and volunteers in Sonoma County and Marin County to complete Running Fence (24.5 miles).

It was only installed for two weeks, before it was completely removed and landscape restored.

This year marks the project's 50th anniversary. I was able to update my Running Fence project in QGIS with another set of source maps which represent the final route.

  7. Nice To Be 'Back In The Data Trenches' Directly

I don't get to be here that often (and that is OK, #ILikeMyJob) - but it is nice to be back working directly with some individual spatial datasets - be it in #QGIS, #ArcGISPro, #PostgreSQL / #PostGIS or wherever...

  8. I created this map six years ago. It was one of my first projects using #QGIS at the time. I wanted to georeference the old source maps to the current landscape.

The orange vector line defines the route of the
#Christo and #JeanneClaude Running Fence , which was a project they completed in the summer of 1976, lasting two weeks.

#RunningFence started in Cotati, and wound through the landscapes of #SonomaCounty and #MarinCounty.

2026 marks the 50th year since the project was created.

  9. Welp, my #mapping attempt at a "Total Value Per Acre" map of #BloomingtonIN failed, but the mess looks pretty.

I believe outside of the core city blocks, too many parcels got joined during a "dissolve" phase, resulting in these mega areas of the same color which shouldn't be there.

It's an interesting analysis to run when considering annexation to check if the proposed additions would contribute more or less on average than existing city blocks.

    888 downloads!
Looks like I’ve created something that people actually find interesting.

But here’s the real question: with a daily rate of 30–40 downloads... what are the odds of catching such a perfectly round number by accident? 🤣

(Maybe the Universe has a soft spot for hydrogeochemistry!) 😁

  12. 💧 Aggressive groundwater and the long memory of contamination

Even after more than a decade of monitoring, the groundwater in this carbonate aquifer remains undersaturated with respect to calcite — consistently showing negative SI values across nearly all observation wells.

This means that the system is still chemically aggressive toward limestone, slowly dissolving the host rock.
The impoundment, operating since 1976, continues to influence the aquifer — with the geometry of possible subsurface voids still uncertain to this day.

📘 All supporting data and modeling results are included in the draft monograph:

  14. ✨ A new version of QDT, the toolkit for deploying QGIS profiles for savvy IT departments, has landed with some nice improvements:

    - better integration for shortcuts generated on Linux
    - allow usage of environment variables in rules path
    - add a new job to set the default profile
    - handle UNC paths
    - documentation improvements
    - creation of a Matrix channel
    - enable Immutable GitHub Releases

  16. After a very long stay at Pine Pond #Perseverance has now moved further down hill, apparently reaching the bottom of the Witch Hazel Hill area, where it has spent the last 120 sols examining rocks.

The path shown is a guess. Elevations are from the Octavia E. Butler landing location.

The map was made in #QGIS, using #NASA's #MMGIS and #HiRISE and #USGS imagery and DTMs.

  17. 🚀 This week a new version of QDT has been released, bringing a new job to automatically set the default QGIS profile: qgis-deployment.github.io/qgis

👐 Beyond features and bug fixes, we're also delighted to welcome a new contributor from outside Oslandia: Nicolas Godet. This is an excellent sign for the open source community aspect of the project. Welcome!

A good moment to give it a try: github.com/qgis-deployment/qgi

  18. #Perseverance has now arrived at the area called Broom's Point.

Tosol is Sol 1435 of the #Mars2020 mission, Lₛ is 52.1, and the local time in Jezero Crater is now 18:21.

The map was made with #QGIS and data from #NASA's #MMGIS, #HiRISE and #USGS

    (switchfromshapefile.org)

    On a related note:
A friend is looking at tracing features (mostly streets and public transportation) from old city maps (Berlin, 1920-30s) with #QGIS. Does anyone have recommendations for (semi-)automated tools?
We've already tried Bunting's AI-Tool and 'Raster Tracer' plugins.qgis.org/plugins/raste, both with some success but not entirely satisfying...
    Maybe something using #gdal?

  20. #Perseverance's 5th campaign, named Northern Rim, on the map (comes out being about 9km from Lookout Hill to Singing Canyon).

Now, if you call this part of *western* Jezero Crater 'northern', then it follows that there will also be a *southern* rim campaign in the future 😎

  21. Another sol, another 40m higher and 200m closer to the top, Lookout Hill, for #Perseverance. The new path shown on the map is a guess.

  22. These are the Voronoi polygons of the intersections in #BloomingtonIN

If you wanted to assign every crash to an intersection, creating voronoi polygons and then counting the crashes in each polygon would be one way to do it, as each polygon represents exactly one intersection.

Works best in denser areas. In sparser networks, you increase the likelihood that the crash was not close by, like with the larger polygons in the corners here.

  23. 🥳 In latest version of QDT:

    - support for local system SSL certificates stores (with trustore on Windows)
    - add fine-grained options to support different SSL contexts
    - various bug fixes in files downloader
    - use Python 3.12 to build packages
    - upstream contributions (pyad)
