#ClimateDiary #Nepal #Glacier ⬆️. A whole world of kinship, livelihoods, history - destroyed in an instant by climate change (& hostile infrastructure)
“The flood did not only take the village. It took the road to the district headquarters, and with it, the road to the rest of the country. The market that fed us is gone . The fields we planted are gone. And even the grain that families still have stored at home is grain they can no longer mill into rice or flour, because the mills are gone too.”

#ClimateDiary I watched my village disappear in an instant.
“When I finally reached someone — an elder brother’s house — it was his wife who answered. “There’s nothing left in the village,” she said simply. “Most of the people are gone.”
I couldn’t make myself believe it. Sole and Tupche sit nearly a hundred metres above the riverbed. No flood in living memory — in centuries, as far as anyone knew — had ever reached that high.” #Nepal #Glacier

CW: The Tibet-China flooding.
A large piece of glacier, made up of ice and rock some 1.3 km wide, broke off high in the mountains and fell some 2 kilometres into the valley below.
Glacier experts reckon a sudden warm spell at high altitudes probably melted snow quickly, which caused water to seep deep into the glacier, making the base slick, and causing the ice mass to break loose. The impact of this hitting the valley generated one hell of a rumble; the USGS thought it was a 5.2 earthquake.
The ice and rock temporarily dammed the Lhende Khola river, which built up behind the debris. When the water pressure broke through the dam, it released a flood of mud, ice, and rocks downstream.
Climate experts reckon rising regional temperatures and climate change are causing Himalayan glaciers to melt and destabilize more rapidly than ever before.
This is a horrible tragedy. I can't imagine what it must have been like to go through it.

'Scientists say while the ice avalanche can’t be directly attributed to climate change at this point, warming temperatures are creating conditions that make events like these more likely.'
So that's a YES!

“Gunjan Silwal (Silwal et al. 2026) recently published an analysis of the glaciers of Langtang, and found that these glaciers are retreating and thinning rapidly. We found that glaciers from 2000-2023 retreated at a rate 1.5 times faster than from 1964-2000, with glacier fragmentation, disconnection and separation extensive.”
"It seems likely from this imagery that this was a huge ice and combined rock landslide."

Put together a sourced timeline: Himalayan Glacier Disasters: Nepal Flood & GLOF Timeline.
The USGS concluded it was not an earthquake - the magnitude-5.2 seismic signal came from the collapse itself.
Sources are listed on the page. Corrections genuinely welcome.

#Glacier collapse may have triggered deadly #Nepal flash flood
A deadly flash flood near Nepal's border with Tibet on Wednesday may have been triggered when the lower part of a glacier broke off and crashed on to the valley floor hundreds of metres below, experts said citing satellite imagery from Planet Labs.

🚧 edit: no need to recurse to "glacier collapse". Please read a better explanation in the next post.
(So i have just learned to beware the New Scientist.)"The full extent of the deaths and damage caused by the enormous flash flood that swept down a river valley in Nepal and Tibet today won’t be clear for weeks. But initial analyses of satellite images and seismic data suggest that the collapse of a high glacier caused the disaster."
"Melting snow appears to have weakened a steep glacier at an altitude of 5 kilometres, causing it to plummet around a kilometre into the river valley below."

Now free for all to read... I board a helicopter from the small town of Franz Josef in the early morning, heading upward into the chilly skies to visit the glacier of the same name:
