We are fortunate be able to hike thru/around our ski area off-season. Probably get arrested ones like Alta or Mammoth Mtn. Strenuous 20K hike to 2865m top today from 2240m base. So much less ❄️ than last year, easy to get around. Not much mud either, drying out fast. Hope our cooler spell this weekend pans out. Wildflowers full swing S-facing slopes lower half. Great views looking out NW-N-E-SE. Warm 21C at base cooler up top of course. #climate #hiking #dogs #mountains #montana #gye

Able make it round the corner 2740m on Hellroaring Rd. that was drifted over 3 weeks ago. On our run 2300m to 2800m then back. Turned around where Sundance and I had only ever close brown bear encounter here 03JUL2021. Drifts further up. He behaved admirably at 16 months of age and got raw steak for dinner that evening 👍🏽. No bear today but little lake nearby was perfect for them cool off in. Warm 21C at start lite SW wind. Drying out fast. #climate #running #dogs #montana #gye #mountains

Nothing like a walk thru the woods on a snowy day...in late May ❄️. Our heaviest precip. event of the year so far had 💦💦 yest., which changed over late. 3cm 0C our place this morn., not unusual here 1700m on Beartooth Front. Got kidz out later up Willow Crk. trail 1850m-2000m then back, 10-15cm heavy wet powder in there. Otter staged her triumphant return back into the wild today after 9 days recovery from her punctured left front paw. Short 8K Silver Run rd/trail run 1850m-2200m then back. Sundance and I are both glad have her back w us. Fairly cool spring pattern continues 10-13C and we beat TRW- forming 👍🏽. Weak upper trough may bring us some much-needed 💦❄️ tonite/tomorrow. Enjoyed the -4C lite N wind where we turned back 2740m. Start in Rock Crk. Canyon 2300m. Glad there was some moisture here, but town got very little. Where 15JUN2021 12000 ha wildfire stopped when hot S winds eased. Spring fully on now 18C lite SE wind. Often very windy here. Bear signs around, but none seen. If it is not on 🔥 it is frozen. Western/Central MT high country. Weather window early today hiked up Hellroaring Rd. toward that plateau from 2350m. Turned back 2720m steep slanted snowpack covering the road. Not much new ❄️ there yet 3C at start. Stayed clear most of time. Passed E Side fire burn area. Still lots smokes, lot of work yet to do. All in 8000ha Cascade burn area from 26-28JUL2008. Stand-replacing hot fire, left dangerous landscape. Steep rocky trail with hazardous snags, no place to be in strong winds. Basin Lakes are short steep hikes from W-fork Canyon 2000m. Lower lake is 2440m 4K from start, upper 2770m is 7.5K up. Got 1km past lower lake 2580m, then too deep ice/frozen slush. Even w spikes, not appealing. Disorienting indeed to see area completely bare almost to the lake. Even more to see it completely open w no real ice/snow around or on. First run of the year in shorts/t-shirt today W-fork Canyon, then up side gulch to old cabin. 1850m-2300m then back. Drying out fast, all ❄️ gone. Not too warm 17.5C RH 22% according to Timbercrest RAWS nearby. Cooler moister pattern developing, weak upper trough may bring us ⚡️. A little early, as to be expected now in new regime.
