  1. theguardian.com/environment/20. Now, why should that be, @thegreenparty? Could it be that #Labour know that if they go ahead & approve #Jackdaw & #Rosebank the #voters of #HolbornandStPancras will punish them - rightly so! - & elect @ZackPolanski? Those voters aren't stupid - they know what the Labour #Government is planning, & that the #LabourParty can't be trusted on the #climate!

"The #survey found that 67 percent of #Jewish #voters plan to back a #Democratic #Congressional #candidate in the November #elections; 26% plan to vote #Republican, and the remainder were undecided.

The #publicopinion research company #GBAOStrategies carried out the #poll on behalf of the nonprofit #JewishVotersResourceCenter.

The poll also found broad disapproval of the #Trump administration. Three-quarters of Jewish voters disapprove of #US #President #DonaldTrump’s performance as president and 82% have an unfavorable view of #VicePresident #JDVance.

    The survey found that #Jews’ top priorities were #costofliving and affordability at 37%; the future of #democracy, 36%; #antisemitism, 25%; #healthcare, 18%; and #Israel, 16%.

A vast majority — 89% — said they were concerned about antisemitism in the US, and 71% said they were emotionally attached to Israel.

Respondents also reported disapproval of the #Netanyahu coalition..."

  12. No national emergency, no seized ballots, no troops at the polls. But the maps are redrawn, the federal election watchdog is gutted, mail-in voting throttled, and "the creation of a climate of fear is a goal in and of itself." The doomsday isn't the seizure of the vote. It's the seizure of the will to vote—so November never comes.

Doesn’t stop people from voting in Nov #midterm #elections, but makes it much more difficult. If voter shows up on #ElectionDay & registration is suspended they must fill out “statement of residence” form, if they’ve moved to new county they’ll either be reqd 2 vote in their old 1 or use provisional #ballot #elections

  15. CW: USPol / US politics

So six Democratic congresscritters crossed the aisle to pass the latest defence spending bill - not that unusual, given their swing districts and being up for election - but they did so with the "SAVE" act attached to it.

Apparently, they have all the self-preservation instinct of the mythical #lemmings from Mutual of Omaha's Wild Fabrication. Because the entire point of the #SAVE act is to disenfranchise as many Democratic-leaning voters as possible. This isn't speculation; it's easy to read in the measures that it calls for, but more than that, #Trump has explicitly described it that way over the last few months.

The #Democrats frequently do not need the #GOP to ratf*ck them [1]; as here, they're quite capable of doing it to themselves.

Everyone who cares about preserving #US democracy, such as it is, needs to yell at their #senators to ensure this monstrosity doesn't pass in the Senate. There's been lots of talk of it not having the votes there, but that was said about other things that (eventually) got passed as well.

[1] Don't blame me for the language. A US president brought the term into wide use.

: Democrats seethe over shutdown deal.
They might be celebrating in a year

The likely end to the longest-ever government shutdown has Democrats turning on each other in searing anger.

The prevailing opinion appears to be frustration that eight senators freelanced a deal with Republicans.

While it does not guarantee the extension of expiring enhanced subsidies for Obamacare health insurance plans, it does guarantee there will be a Senate vote on that subject.

Sen. Tim Kaine, who helped finalize the deal, defended it on CNN Monday. Kaine noted that the White House had pledged to rehire federal workers fired during the lapse in government funding and to bar further reductions in force at least until January 30.

That’s not good enough for many Democrats who were feeling powerful after victories in mostly blue-state elections last week. They wanted to hold out for more guarantees from the White House, even as the nation’s air travel system started to buckle under the strain of air traffic controllers not being paid and people who rely on the government for assistance buying food went without.

There’s no guarantee that House Speaker Mike Johnson will allow a House vote on extending the enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, but Kaine argued that if senators pass it with bipartisan support and Johnson ignores it, the GOP will pay a political price.

“Their midterm election next year would look a lot worse even than the shellacking they got last week in Virginia and elsewhere,” Kaine said.

The expiring enhanced subsidies, according to analysis by KFF, will be felt more in states that voted for Trump in 2024, and could result in millions of people opting not to have health insurance at all.

This shutdown, assuming it ends and is not repeated in January, won’t be top of mind for voters in midterm elections next year, but it’s still worth taking a look at what happens at the ballot box after a shutdown.

    DrWeb’s Comment…

“While it does not guarantee the extension of expiring enhanced subsidies for Obamacare health insurance plans, it does guarantee there will be a Senate vote on that subject.” –article quote

I have highlighted in bold a quote from the article. It is embarassing to post the truth for these eight renegades. They got scammed, including Catherine Cortez Masto, one of my Senators I used to support in Nevada.

To believe that quote, is to believe or trust Trump. I don’t.

These 8 should have known better. I don’t believe or trust the Trump Senate. I don’t.

It won’t vote on the subject, or the votes will vote to remove Obamacare and/or the subsidies, surprise surprise.

All the damn signs point to Trump erasing Obamacare (ego thing to do), and replacing it –after many years of asking GOP for any national health plan, they will dump something out and call it National Health Care by Trump.

Watch, wait, Trust me. They are screwed, these 8, we are screwed by the failure to support the Democratic Party (outliers not welcomed). All those closed days –accomplished NOTHING. Because of these 8 fools. –DrWeb

  19. #Maine rejects #JusticeDepartment’s request for all #voters’ personal info, list of election officials

Secretary of State #ShennaBellows' responded to the request by telling the DOJ to "go jump in the Gulf of Maine."

by Dylan Tusinski, July 29, 2025

AUGUSTA — "Maine is denying the U.S. Department of Justice access to its voter registration records, state officials said Tuesday, rejecting an unprecedented request for sensitive voter data that the Trump administration has now delivered to all 50 states.

"A letter late last week to Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and signed by Deputy Assistant U.S. Attorney General Michael Gates claims Maine had roughly 11,000 voters with duplicate registration. It requested the state’s entire voter registration list dating back to November 2022 'to ensure that ineligible voters are being removed.'

"The state has 14 days to respond to the letter dated July 24.

"Bellows, who is also a Democratic candidate for governor, said in a press conference Tuesday the Trump administration is overstepping its bounds, empowering false narratives and 'trying to change the topic away from the Epstein files.'

" 'Article 1 of the Constitution places the states — not President Trump, not the federal government — in charge of federal elections,' she said. 'The DOJ doesn’t get to know everything about you just because they want to.'

"Bellows’ office is coordinating with Maine’s Office of Attorney General to draft a formal response, she said.
The Maine Republican Party has previously claimed widespread voter fraud across the state, but a subsequent investigation by Bellows’ office concluded this month and found those claims were baseless. Just because someone is registered to vote in two different towns doesn’t mean they intended to vote twice. Often, it simply means that they moved between elections.

"A spokesman for Maine Senate Republicans declined to comment on the DOJ’s request or Bellows’ response. Other Maine GOP officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

"In addition to #VoterRegistration information, the DOJ also has requested the names of local election officials as well as information about noncitizens, felons, and deceased people’s alleged participation in Maine elections following President Donald Trump’s repeated false claims that the 2020 election was rigged and stolen from him.

" 'Please provide a description of the steps that Maine has taken, and when those steps were taken, to identify registered voters who are ineligible to vote as well as the procedures it used to remove those ineligible voters from the registration list,' the DOJ’s letter reads.

"The DOJ has not publicly said why they are seeking voter records across the country. Asked about the request to Maine and other states, spokesperson Pierson Furnish replied in an email 'No comment.'

"The first Trump administration similarly made requests to view all Americans’ voter information in 2017. Then-Secretary of State Matt Dunlap said at the time he would release voters’ names, ages, residences and districts with the government, as allowed by Maine law.

"The American Civil Liberties Union [#ACLU] of Maine said the DOJ’s actions both now and then are part of 'a clear pattern of intimidation' and applauded Bellows’ refusal to share voters’ information.

" 'This letter also fuels #FalseNarratives that sow distrust in our elections. Maine elections are safe, secure, and accessible, and that’s why Maine consistently has some of the highest voter turnout,' said Samuel Crankshaw, the group’s communications director. 'Our government should focus on helping more people exercise their fundamental rights.'

Maine’s voter turnout is reliably high compared to other states and more Mainers voted in 2024 than in any election before, according to state voting data.

"The Justice Department initially reached out to swing states like #Michigan, #Arizona and #Wisconsin, where local election clerks have reported federal agents requesting broad access to the states’ #RegistrationRolls and #VotingMachines.

Now, Bellows said all 50 states have received similar letters. #Maine, #Minnesota and #NewHampshire are the only states to have rejected the requests so far."

    «
That’s the characteristic of our country. We can get all lathering at the time over some political campaign promise, or some conference pledge, but if the thing just drags along long enough we forget what it was that originally promised. The short memories of the American voters is what keeps our politicians in office.
