  1. Every form of #democracy eventually fails because #voters don’t want to put effort into paying attention to where things are going, and taking action before it’s too late.

“It can’t be as bad as all that.”
    “Meh, all politicians are corrupt.”
“My vote doesn’t count for much.”
“It’s too hard to learn about the issues.”
“My news tells me everything is fine.”
“Enough other people vote to fix the problems.”
    “I was busy that day.”
“Was there an election? I didn’t notice.”

    Pay attention, and vote.

Denver Post: Info for confidential voters was made public in Colorado secretary of state web update, office confirms. “The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office made information for more than 130,000 confidential voters publicly accessible for over a week because of an error in updating a voter registration tool, agency officials said Thursday. 4. #Trump and #Republicans won by pretending to be #populists. Then they betrayed their #voters by being #elitists instead. #DemocraticSocialists actually are populists, and can appeal to the #MAGA base if they do it right.

'Simon Bridges wrote an op-ed for the #NZ Herald on 31 July 2026. It ran 1,200 words. It contained zero verifiable numbers, zero #economic #data, and zero engagement with the actual mechanism producing NZ's cost-of-living #crisis. What it contained was something far more revealing: a perfect specimen of the Muppets Show that has displaced #political accountability ...
'That family in South Auckland — the one Bridges pretends to speak for — that has been paying more for everything since 2021 while their #wages have fallen in real terms.
    '.....
'Bridges' op-ed, published under the headline "Our political aspirants need to cut out the silly business, it's serious economic times," opens with a Kabuki theatre of gravitas and closes with the same. Between those two pillars of self-congratulation, he advances a single argument: politicians should focus on "growing the metaphorical cake" rather than "redistributing our collective #earnings."
'This is the household metaphor in political dress. It is the same lunacy that tells #voters #government spending is a zero-sum transfer, that "#growth" is a force of #Nature rather than a #policy decision outcome...
'...When #capital keeps grabbing a larger share of output and #labour is left to takes less, #consumer spending contracts. Firms cannot sell #goods if workers lack the purchasing power to buy them...
'The real test of seriousness is ...: can you name the mechanism producing the outcome you claim to care about? Can you explain why NZ household #debt reached the unbearable 167% of disposable #income? Can you account for why real wages have fallen for five consecutive years? If you cannot, you are not being serious about the economy. You are performing a theatrical piece on seriousness that purposely fogs real reasons that produced the crisis.'

So six Democratic congresscritters crossed the aisle to pass the latest defence spending bill - not that unusual, given their swing districts and being up for election - but they did so with the "SAVE" act attached to it.

Apparently, they have all the self-preservation instinct of the mythical #lemmings from Mutual of Omaha's Wild Fabrication. Because the entire point of the #SAVE act is to disenfranchise as many Democratic-leaning voters as possible. This isn't speculation; it's easy to read in the measures that it calls for, but more than that, #Trump has explicitly described it that way over the last few months.

The #Democrats frequently do not need the #GOP to ratf*ck them [1]; as here, they're quite capable of doing it to themselves.

Everyone who cares about preserving #US democracy, such as it is, needs to yell at their #senators to ensure this monstrosity doesn't pass in the Senate. There's been lots of talk of it not having the votes there, but that was said about other things that (eventually) got passed as well.

[1] Don't blame me for the language. A US president brought the term into wide use.

  10. This article has some great charts & graphs, showing the breakdown in early voters.
TODAY by NOON, checkins (including early votes) has BLOWN AWAY recent mayoral races, 1.2M votes total!
We will likely see totals which will compare w/ the record-breaking races of 1965, '69: 2.6M, 2.46M votes (81%!).
Early voters younger than 44 were a huge surprise this time...

  11. "Just briefly in our #political #economy today, two new #surveys show both #voters and #business leaders are now blaming the current #National-led #Government, rather than the previous #Labour Government, for an ongoing #economic #slump that worsened again in August."

  12. @Jaden3

    And remember.

    This is everyone's #history.

#Black people are #oppressed when #white people act out the #oppression. Oppression isn't something that just happens to people. My forebears built some hefty #systems of oppression, but these systems still need buy-in to keep going.

In computer systems, we use the word #privilege to describe the level of #access a user has. Whether they can #read a file. Whether they can #update a file.

Our #government is updated by #elections. By #voters. For most of #USA history, Black people did not have update access to government. This is not Black history, this is #USHistory.

When you research Black history, remember this is our shared history.

These are the stories about our #nation. Many of these are like the #family stories that are told in whispers. Bad things that were done by people that we're related to.

When people say that they don't want this taught because it will make their #children feel bad about themselves, they usually mean one of two things:

    - /they/ feel bad about this #evil themselves, and they feel the kind of #guilt that they want to hide from. They want their kids to remain #innocent about the evil in the world, especially this kind

    or

    - they /don't/ feel bad about these #evils and they do /not/ want to be #judged by their children

  13. #SAVEAct Could Stop Millions of #Women From Voting. Here’s What You Need to
    Know
Bill would make it harder for women, people of color, young voters, and other marginalized groups to register to #vote. It would have a direct impact on anyone whose #legalname does not match their #birthcertificate or #passport, such as 79% of heterosexual married women.
Data show that SAVE Act would only #disenfranchise eligible American #voters, and do nothing to prevent illegal voting.

  14. Recap of #US / #USPol #News today...

    #DonaldTrump:
"I don't like federal programs that help people who aren't rich, therefore, I will do my own Government Shutdown."

    #Trump #voters:
"Wait... THAT'S MY FOOD STAMPS AND SOCIAL SECURITY!!"

    The #Market / #Economy:
"Looks like I'm going to crash now." 🙂

#Republicans in #Congress over the course of the next couple hours:
"WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK ARE YOU DOING YOU SENILE NEPOBABY FUCK. WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK."

The Courts at the end of that time:
"Yeah, no, he can't do that."

Reminder, the current job of Anti-Trump #Resistance is to lower his approval rating, so uh... I guess mock him for doing that?

Write your #Representative and #Senators. Complain that this is not helping the economy, and that this will directly harm your community.

  15. Slight sales #taxhike around Crystal Lake Illinois was meant to help fund programs for #mentalhealth services but brought ‘greater crisis,’ a local board leader claims. While the town's sales tax is still 3% lower than some #Illinois towns, and raising #salestax ended an unpopular #propertytax levy, the apparently complicated math predictions stumped county officials who now see shortfalls in funding lower than predicted tax tallies sold to #voters.

  18. State and election officials from across the country issued a ⭐️warning Wednesday that ongoing concerns with the country's mail system could #disenfranchise #voters.

#Mail-in #voting has become more popular since the pandemic but officials have persistently warned that the U.S. Postal Service has struggled with #delivery #failures.

The latest warning from the National Association of Secretaries of State and the National Association of State Election Directors comes as a number of states are set to
    👉begin early votingthis month.

🔥A host of problems with the mail delivery system have been evident over the past year, the two groups wrote in a letter to U.S. Postmaster General #Louis #DeJoy Wednesday.

These include receiving mailed ballots that had been postmarked on time arrive after the deadline to be counted
and instances in which ballots that were correctly addressed were returned to voters as undeliverable.

"We have not seen improvement or concerted efforts to remediate our concerns," despite repeated outreach efforts to USPS, the groups wrote.

"We implore you to take immediate and tangible corrective action ... failure to do so will risk limiting voter participation and trust in the election process," they said.

While mail-in voting is likely to be less prevalent this year than it was in 2020, both parties have embraced encouraging voters to cast their ballots early via mail.

Trump spent years disparaging early voting as "corrupt," earlier this year he and several GOP groups embraced mail-in voting.

Democrats, on the other hand, welcomed vote-by-mail efforts in 2020 and now enjoy a large mail-in voting advantage in swing states

  19. @deadtom @georgetakei For 20+ years, the #Koch Brothers & other ultra #conservative donors promoted/funded a unified system of #gerrymandering by the #GOP across the country in order to #disenfranchise poor/POC #voters & dilute the blue votes. Plus #purges of voter rolls as in #Georgia. Dems are FINALLY suing to demand fair maps, but it’s like chipping at a mountain w/a teaspoon. Blue voters are out & vocal. They’re chipping away at the mountain but it takes time to undo the damage.
