「The #SANationalDefenceForce is preparing to send reinforcements from #SouthAfrica to the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (#DRC), said military sources, after nine South African soldiers were killed and several injured in fighting there on Thursday, 23 January and Friday, 24 January.
Parliament has called for a probe into the combat readiness of the force and whether it has adequate air and other support after its heavy losses.
The #SANDF announced on Saturday that nine soldiers had died and an unnamed number were wounded in successfully repelling a full-scale attack on them by Rwandan-backed #M23 rebels who have laid siege to the provincial capital, #Goma.
“Due to the heroic resistance put up by our gallant fighters,” the M23 had not only been halted but had been pushed back, said the SANDF.
It said seven of those killed were members of the Southern African Development Community (#SADC) Mission in DRC (#SAMIDRC) while two were members of the #UN peacekeeping mission in DRC, #Monusco. Their mission is to neutralise armed rebel groups like M23 which have been terrorising civilians in eastern DRC for decades.」

While everyone is going on about the USA political shitshow there is another shitshow in Africa.
There is video doing the rounds showing the South African National Defence Force deploying in the DRC. The #SANDF is supposed to be a peace keeping force but special forces with ZU-23 autocannons and G5 155mm howitzers indicate something totally different.
They are engaging M23, the Rwandan supported rebels.Forgive me that this is bigger worry for this South African.

「Lest we forget – SS Mendi 21 February 1917
The #SouthAfricanNativeLabourCorps men aboard her came from a range of social backgrounds, and from a number of different peoples spread over the South African provinces and neighbouring territories. (287 were from #Transvaal, 139 from the #EasternCape, 87 from #Natal, 27 from #NorthernCape, 26 from the #OrangeFreeState, 26 from #Basutoland, eight from #Bechuanaland [#Botswana], five from #WesternCape, one from #Rhodesia and one from #SouthWestAfrica). Most had never seen the sea before this voyage, and very few could swim. The officers and NCOs were white Southern Africans.

Poignantly, 21 February 2024 did not see military celebrations but the sombre repatriation to South Africa of two SA National Defence force soldiers killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo in a rebel mortar strike last week.」

「Two SANDF soldiers killed while deployed with SAMIDRC mission
Injured peacekeepers in the #DRC being transported by a #SAAF #Oryx for treatment after a rebel attack.
The South African National Defence Force (#SANDF) has suffered its first casualties as part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of #Congo (#SAMIDRC), with two soldiers killed and three injured in a mortar attack.
The SANDF today confirmed that on 14 February at about 13h30, a mortar bomb landed inside one of the South African Contingent military bases.
As a result of this indirect fire, the SANDF suffered two fatalities and three members sustained injuries. The injured were taken to the nearest Hospital in #Goma for medical attention, Department of Defence Head of Communication Siphiwe Dlamini said in a statement.
He added that details of the incident are still sketchy at the moment, and further investigations will be conducted to “determine the basis of the incident.”」

“Accolades must be given to the quick reaction from the aircrew and Amet and their professional conduct during this extremely difficult technical rescue,” Smith said.”

Soldiers burning bodies are definitely against the law of armed conflict. If authentic, it's extremely detrimental to the #SADC mission in #Mozambique also known as #SAMIM It could possibly boost the #extremists recruitment. #news #Africa #SANDF #conflict https://p.dw.com/p/4Lyqq

Some other questions about this #SANDF military deployment:
-Was André de Ruyter, the Eskom boss who resigned this week, right that he face sustained sabotage campaigns at #powerstations, with slow or no progress by the police or State Security Agency to investigate and prevent instances of sabotage?
-Who benefits from these crimes and how do they benefit?
-The SANDF is chronically underfunded and overextended, will the South African government provide extra resources for this extra duty? -
#SouthAfrican President Cyril #Ramaphosa has requested his Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Thandi Modise to deploy the South African National Defence Force #SANDF to protect several of the state #electricity supplier, #ESKOM power stations to protect against the theft of essential components.. It raises some important questions:
-Why the SANDF and not the SA Police Service #SAPS whose job this should be being deployed?
