  6. As the 2024 election approached,
    advertisements began popping up in key swing states suggesting local officials had discretion not to certify elections.

    The advertisements were misleading.
    Certification is not optional,
    and officials are required to certify the vote once the proper process for any election challenges are complete and an official challenge is complete.

    The warnings, nonetheless, arrived at a moment when Donald Trump and allies seemed to be gearing up to contest the election results if he lost.

    New documents reviewed by the Guardian show that the group behind the advertisements received financial support from a non-profit linked to prominent election deniers with ties to Trump.
    The same non-profit, the
    ❌ Foundation For Accountability Integrity & Research In Elections Fund
    ❌(Fair Elections Fund),
    also paid influencers to promote an anti-voting bill in 2024.

    #Cleta #Mitchell, a lawyer and longtime ally of Trump who assisted his efforts to overturn the 2020 race,
    and #Heather #Honey, a researcher known for misleading election analyses who now works in the Department of Homeland Security,
    are both listed as directors of the fund, which was incorporated in Delaware in 2023.

    Honey’s appointment to an elections role at the DHS last year has caused considerable alarm among voting rights groups,
    who say it places an election denier in a powerful government role.
    Before she was in government, Honey produced misleading research that Trump has cited to undermine confidence in the 2020 election.

    She has falsely claimed, for example, that there were more votes in Pennsylvania in 2020 than there were voters.
    Her appointment comes as Trump and his administration continue to sow doubt about the integrity of American elections,
    making baseless accusations of fraud without offering substantial evidence.

    There is still concern that Trump could deploy the powerful machinery of his justice department and other government resources to contest the result of the midterm elections this year.

  12. Hype for the Future 172K: Glascock County, Georgia

    Overview By total population, the County of Glascock is the fourth-smallest within the modern State of Georgia. However, the county is home to numerous rural communities such as Mitchell and Gibson, as well as the nearby site of the historic German settlement at Georgetown, abandoned circa 1793 along the Ogeechee River. Interestingly, a few of the German Salzburgers have ultimately moved north to settle within modern Pennsylvania eventually.

  15. Rapid Growth of #SCFN
    The Right-wing
    State Freedom Caucus Network

    The "Conservative Partnership Institute" (CPI) launched SFCN in 2021
    and shares leadership and office space with the organization.

    Mark #Meadows, Trump’s former chief of staff and one of the founders of the congressional "House Freedom Caucus",
    is a senior partner at CPI and is on the board of SFCN.

    For Republicans, freedom caucuses that have emerged in state legislatures in the past few years have played the same obstructionist role as the House Freedom Caucus in Congress,
    -- slowing or stopping initiatives by more traditional members of the party through political maneuvering.

    In newly available IRS filings, SFCN disclosed $1.73 million in revenue in 2024
    and just over $1 million in expenses.

    In 2023, it reported $1.02 million in revenue and just over $730,000 in expenses.

    SFC Foundation, SFCN’s sister organization,
    reported revenue of $1.86 million and expenses of $1.92 million in 2024.

    In 2023, the foundation disclosed $1.22 million in revenue and $1.55 million in expenses.

    SFC Foundation shares office space, staff, and board members with SFCN.

    Much of the funding for SFCN is untraceable,
    but a CMD review of hundreds of IRS filings identified four sources in 2024:

    🔸the "American Federation for Children" (established by Trump’s former Secretary of Education Betsy #DeVos), $25,000;

    🔸the "National Christian Charitable Foundation", $80,000;

    🔸"Renew Massachusetts Coalition Foundation", $100,000;

    🔸and the "Robert S and Star Pepper Foundation", $5,000.

    RMC is registered at the same address as SFCN and CPI and,
    like SFCN, is also led by Andy #Roth.

    Through a similar analysis of hundreds of IRS filings, CMD has been able to uncover several key sources of funding for the SFC Foundation,
    including its biggest known contributors:

    🔸#CPI, $1.03 million (2022–23);

    🔸#Consumers#Research, $200,000 (2022; 2024);

    🔸the Koch political network’s preferred donor-advised fund #DonorsTrust, $240,000 (2024);

    🔸and Cleta #Mitchell’s "Foundation for Accountability, Integrity & Research in Elections Fund" (#FAIR #Elections #Fund), $300,000 (2023).

    Like CPI, Mitchell’s voter suppression group is registered at the same address.

    (A full list of CMD’s identified sources of funding for both SFCN and the foundation is available on SourceWatch.)

  17. Several high-ranking federal election officials
    attended a summit last week at which prominent figures who worked to
    🔥overturn Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 election
    pressed the president to
    👉 declare a national emergency to take over this year’s midterms.

    According to videos, photos and social media posts reviewed by ProPublica,
    the meeting’s participants included #Kurt #Olsen, a White House lawyer charged with reinvestigating the 2020 election,
    and #Heather #Honey, the Department of Homeland Security official in charge of election integrity.

    The event was convened by #Michael #Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser,
    and attended by #Cleta #Mitchell,
    who directs the "Election Integrity Network",
    a group that has spread false claims about election fraud and noncitizen voting.

    Election experts say that the meeting reflects an intensifying push to
    persuade Trump to take unprecedented actions to affect the vote in November.

    Courts have largely blocked his efforts to reshape elections through an executive order,
    and legislation has stalled in Congress that would mandate strict voter ID requirements across the country.

    The Washington Post reported Thursday that activists associated with those at the summit have been circulating a draft of an executive order
    that would ❌ban mail-in ballots
    and ❌get rid of voting machines
    as part of a federal takeover.

    #Peter #Ticktin, a lawyer who worked on the executive order and had a client at the summit,
    told ProPublica these actions were
    “all part of the same effort.”

    The summit followed other meetings and discussions between administration officials and activists
    — many not previously reported
    — stretching back to at least last fall,
    according to emails and recordings obtained by ProPublica.

    The coordination between those inside and outside the government represents a breakdown of crucial guardrails,
    experts on U.S. elections said.

    “The meeting shows that the same people who tried to overturn the 2020 election
    have only grown better organized
    and are now embedded in the machinery of government,”
    said Brendan Fischer,
    a director at the "Campaign Legal Center",
    a nonpartisan pro-democracy organization.

    “This creates substantial risk that the administration is laying the groundwork to improperly reshape elections ahead of the midterms
    or even go against the will of the voters.”
