Easy 5 km run after work. Though 23°C and ☀️ tried to make it less easy. Still managed to keep it in zone 2.
Didn’t stop for photos so I’ll use one from yesterday’s concert. The University of Oulu chamber orchestra had their spring concert yesterday at the campus.

Three days of short runs at Iso-Syöte, southernmost fell in Finland. Lots of vertical gain compared to home where it’s basically flat (if not counting underpasses).
I had a ten day break from running due to blood tests and tiny surgical ops. I wanted to make sure any possible impacts of running didn’t influence the blood tests. Like some liver and blood indicators. Also I had moles removed from the hand and leg so no running because of healing wounds either. Now it’s back to normal.

It has been six weeks from my last #run toot. But I’ve been #running though. A bit behind my target for this year but it’s OK.
Did run through the winter so I’m happy about that. There was a ten day break when I was afraid getting a flu but practically didn’t. Did walks just in case so not totally sedentary. Promised myself to do strength training, which I’ve done almost regularly and also indoors rowing.
Did even my first #halfmarathon (not in a competition). Blaming the wife since she had this plan all along but lured me into a 15k and then started to add “one more?” until we reached 21+ km. Not angry though, it was a nice surprise we could make it ❤️. After 20 mins of warming up we ran 1.5 km and then walked for a minute. Repeat and rinse until the end.
Almost all the #snow is gone. Forecast promises some snow next weekend but let’s see. Daytime temps have been 1…7°C and nights -2-2°C. Sunrise 6.42, sunset at 20.04.

Haven’t had the motivation to post anything, including #runs anywhere, including Mastodon, for a while. Still continuing to #run, which is obviously a Good Thing™️.
All is good, vacation started and such. End of the semester was really busy, many things were left in limbo, awaiting for the August and me returning to work. Which I will not think further than this.
Some issues with tendons inside the left ankle (medial), having a burning feeling in the ankle, heel bone. It goes away after running a while but then returns. Have to be careful about that and continue working on the muscle strength there and overall. Otherwise all good and happy about the progress made in running.

10k run today to celebrate the 108/10 years of independence of Finland.
The artillery fired ten times this morning at the Castle Island (Linnansaari) near city centre. To the surprise of tourists and those recently moved in the city.
Behind the artillery men in the photo the Oulu river delta and the Island of Pitch (Pikisaari). The city was a major hub of tar trade in the age of wooden sail ships.
Pitch is material made by distilling tar. It was used to treat the outside of wooden ships to protect them from sea water and creatures. Long time ago, before the independence, Englishmen came and burned the tar warehouses down due to some stupid war. Too bad they had already paid for the tar to be delivered to them…

Managed to squeeze in walks or runs to every day this week. A good start after the flu-induced pause.
Today a 10 km run in beautiful sunny weather, 8°C.

We saw a large flock of cranes singing and flying south when in our run. Didn’t catch them all in this picture, nor the sound, unfortunately.
Noticed Apple considered my (and probably others’) feedback on a view of Apple Watch training app.
The view displaying the heart rate zones was difficult to read quickly while running. Too small elements with colouring of zones, colours too close to each other. Now with watchOS 26 it is much better, larger elements readable in one glance. I use that as the default view when doing zone 2 runs so this was a good update just because of this.

Nature organised some functional strength training for me during the night. 15-20 cm of new snow.
The car in the photo does not cope well with temps below -20°C for days. Ignition battery is located under the backseat. In an area that does not get any heat when driving. So it will not recharge properly if not driving long enough every cold day.
We had to call a towing truck to recharge it last winter and again two weeks ago. To avoid this, we have to take it for a drive every cold day for at least an hour. Or buy an ignition battery charger to avoid towing car fees. Or install a device that’ll charge it when warming the engine. Or change it to another model. Otherwise a nice little car with four wheel drive.

So would the climate change interest you more if you knew that phytoplankton produces most of the oxygen in the atmosphere?
If they die due to warming oceans we will all suffocate.
Edit: and did you know the oxygen levels have been in steady decline for a while? Though small but still.

Exceptional hotness continues, several weeks of it already. Fortunately they’re forecasting rain on Sunday. Originally it was supposed to already start on Saturday. I prefer a milder climate, that’s why I live in 65° north, ffs.
Already dreaming of sleet raining against my face and ground covered with snow.
Did a short 2k run and some SUPping when vacationing in the Rokua National park with my kids’ families. And more SUPping when returning home, some cycling too. Run a 5k today at 27°C spending half of the water on my head. Run went well, considering the feet.
Yesterday we met Paavo, a kind and heat exhausted dog on the run. After cooling him down and ringing some doorbells we managed to return him to his home.

Lunch and aperol spritz at the Oulu Workers' Sailing Club. Heard that there was an old man inside whining about the service at “the communists’ place”.

Today’s actions included taking two granddaughters to meet Peppa Pig. The queue was long but luckily well organised… Then a 10 km run in a beautiful sunshine and the obligatory and relaxing sauna afterwards.

Another 5k with the wife yesterday. I’m looking at my previous PB in 5k in 2015 and if I could defeat myself 10 years ago….

A little 4.5 km run today with the wife. After this there will be a two day pause (for me at least), due to calming down for a lab test on Thursday.
The dirt path was covered by frozen ice so the studded shoes were a good choice also today. Enjoyed the run, on zones 1-2 even though it was a bit more speedy run than usual for me, averaging 7.25m/km.
2°C ☁️ 95% humidity. Still waiting for the proper winter.

Picked up Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock from the library bus afterwards. It conveniently stops by my son’s family so biked to meet them also 🙂 I’ve read the book in 1986 when doing my military service.
Remembered the book while watching a horror movie with a mystical forest and wanted to read it again.

Finnish translation from Star Wars: Rogue One says “Kun taisteluasema on tuhottu, kuvernööri Tarkin,…”.
In English the translation says “When the battle station has been destroyed, Governor Tarkin…”.
What was actually said: “When the battle station is finished, Governor Tarkin,…”. And by finished, they mean it is ready for use. Totally the opposite meaning!
These blunders are too common. Such a pity these companies are so poor they have so little money to put in decent translations done professionally.
