A Spontaneous Ride to Mont Tendre Following the Wrong Route
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Yesterday I hesitated to wake up to go for the Coffee and Croissant loop. I decided to go anyway. This ride was at a relaxed pace. It's amusing. When I left home I could see a beautiful sunrise, with nice light, and clear skies. By the time we started the ride mist had come up and we were riding through humid clouds. It was so wet I saw drops of water falling from my glasses as they condensed during the ride.
After this someone suggested we go for another ride. I went home, re-charged my head unit for a few minutes, as well as my radar, before heading back down and starting the route.
Because it was at short notice I didn't draw the route properly. I relied on the swiss national swiss cycling signs to get us to where we wanted to get. I thought we wanted to follow route 7 but we wanted to follow route 1 and 46, before then heading up to Mont Tendre.
Route 7 goes to Vallorbe, but it doesn't go to Vallorbe via Marchairuz, it goes via the Route Des Montagnes, by the Noirmont. This means that we got close to where we wanted to get, on the wrong side of the Jura.
My memory had played a trick on me. We should have followed route 1, 63, and then 473 towards Montricher, and then up to Mont Tendre. I had expected route 7 to go up via Montricher. It would have been easy to check.
If you're cycling, you can draw a GPS track, and then follow it, but, if you study the cycling route maps, then you can follow the signs instead. This allows you to take roads that are usually quieter. Cycling without cars is more pleasant. I don't remember if any cars passed us along the top.
The route we took, although wrong was nice. Now I know that I could cycle to Vallorbe, if I had the desire to.
And Finally
If you cycle in Switzerland, and you want to use the national routes, rather than a GPS head unit, make sure you're following the right routes like you would when driving from Switzerland to Barcelona. It's Route 1, until it's route 63, and from this village we follow route 473, and then we follow the signs for our destination.By this method you can explore without a GPS, or have a backup solution, if you get lost.
And Finally, next time I will draw a route properly.

#TimeTravelingGhost Part 46: EP 4: 1937 Amelia Earhart.
#Wss366 #MastoPrompt #TimeTravelAuthors 9/27 Saturday excerpt (optional word: pleasant)
The ocean mist that was drifting in was #pleasant after the night's muggy warmth. The beach had been fairly straight until this point, but with the limited visibility, we almost fell into what I guessed was an inlet to a lagoon. Soggy, burnt wood was mixed with the sand, and its faint odor perfumed the air. We still hadn’t seen Amelia, and I was more convinced than ever that I knew where we were. It was the #worst option, the one place I’d prayed we wouldn’t find ourselves.
“I think I hear something,” Emily said, pointing inland.
When I listened, I thought I heard crying, but it could have been the wind. “That way is as good as any,” I said.
The sound faded as we walked along the beach. No matter how hard I listened, all I could hear was the wind, the surf, and the scuttling of crabs, some of which were as big as a cat or small dog.
The memory of a pretty papillon named "Rindy" floated up into my consciousness, and I wondered if he had been mine.
“There it is again,” Emily said.
This time, I could plainly hear a woman weeping. The sound came from in front of us, off to the right.
“Amelia, Amelia Earhart!” I yelled, and the weeping stopped.
“There’s a path,” Emily said, pointing to a rough trail leading inland through the trees.
“I’m here! Thank God at last,” came a shout from the direction the path led.
We followed the voice and soon found a clearing. In the center were the ashes of a fire, scattered coconut, and crab shells. The scent of the jungle and sea mingled with the sour-sweet stench of death. On the far side of the fire lay a rotting corpse. Crabs that had nearly picked the skeleton clean scurried away from our light. The word “#gross” almost escaped my lips.
Just beyond stood a woman dressed in aviator clothes. We had found Amelia Earhart.

The Beauty of Flowing Air
Reading Time: 4 minutes
People think that to be comfortable on a hot day you need to rush to an air conditioned room or building but that idea is wrong. When I worked on one building, for three years, I called it "air conditioned hell" for a simple reason. For the body to cool it needs air flow to help evaporate water. When there is no air flow it feels stuffy, and we interpret this as being too hot.
Well Designed Housing
When I lived in a 1980s house I knew that the basement and ground floor would be a pleasant 21°c up to 25 or so in summer if I opened the windows at the wrong time of day. The result is that if I was careful that building was comfortable, even in the hottest heatwaves.
The Insulated Box With Little Air Flow
In contrast living in a Minérgie building, designed for a cold climate is hell for two key reasons. The first is that the stairwell, and lift shaft have no way of venting outdoors, except if people on the top floor open their hallway doors.
The result is that in summer the core of the building heats, and heats, and heats. As it is minergie everything is designed to keep winter heat in, but there are no vents to evacuate summer heat. As I write this post it is 30°c in the room where I am sitting.
In the mornings the Outdoor air temperature (OAT) is in the twenties. It is 26°c outdoors now. If the heat exchanger worked properly, then, with closed windows, and doors, the building could bring cool air into the building, and vent warm air.
A few years ago, around 2003, we had a heat wave. I was living in an apartment that had windows on both sides. I would open the windows, and balcony door, and I would have a cooling breeze from sunrise until sunset. It was warm, but I was never uncomfortable.
When I worked in the Palais Wilson I was on the ground floor with tarmac right outside my window. I would be soaked due to the heat. Eventually I learned to open the door behind me, to the hallway, to get a breeze. As soon as I did that I felt more comfortable.
Another person, in the same room, a few weeks later did the thing normal people did. He turned on a fan, instead.
Since living in this apartment I have felt uncomfortable with the heat and I have had to adapt. I adapted by wearing shorts, for the first time in years. I adapted by opening the veluxes just enough to vent hot air outwards without allowing hot outdoor air back in. In so doing I get a chimney effect which helps create a draft that helps cool me. It's a low tech solution that helps keep me cool, without using air conditioning.
Water and Shade
When I worked in another office I found that an open window and a carton of ice tea would help me stay cool in summer. I found that air flow and hydration are how we keep cool in summer.
The Fallacy of Air Conditioning
When I worked in the air conditioned building, despite the temperature being controlled it was still stifling because of the lack of air flow. For humans to stay cool, we don't need to refrigerate them like machines. We need air flow that helps evaporate water. The human body is designed to keep cool, and so is nature.
Of Radiant Concrete Jungles and Cool Forests
When you hike, and when you cycle, you immediately feel the effect of cycling into a city and stopping at a traffic light. That cooling air flow that you felt when cycling is gone. You're suffocated by an unbearable urban heat that makes you deeply uncomfortable. You become desperate for a fountain, to splash your head.
A few minutes later you're out of the urban jungle and you're riding into a cool forest. The shade keeps you cool, but so do the transpiring trees, and the river flowing nearby.
Nature keeps us cool, and villages had plenty of places where people could go for shade, and to cool down. Villages are becoming urban jungles. Cool trees and gardens are being replaced with apartment blocks and tarmac parkings.
The Hunt for Air Conditioning
Americanised people see the heat and they're desperate for air conditioning to cool down. There are three flaws with air conditioning. The first of these is that it requires huge amounts of energy. That energy releases carbon dioxide and that carbon dioxide makes global warming worse.
One day, in July, I finished my morning shift and I stepped outdoors. I saw people in summer clothing, ready for a barbecue. I was in trousers and a fleece. In an air conditioned office it is Autumn all year long. You don't acclimate to the heat. The result is that you go from being cold, to cooked, and back to being cold. In my eyes an open window, and a pleasant breeze achieve the same thing without the energy cost.
The third one is that people forget about environmentally sound solutions that have been in use for generations, centuries or even longer.
And Finally
Idealistically I want cooling to be natural, rather than powered by electricity. I want plants and natural phenomena to help cool. If I can open windows on two sides of a building then I will try that. If I can keep the shutters closed until after the sun has vanished I will do that.
I know that the veluxes get so hot that they can't be touched in summer. That's why I open them just enough for the heat to escape but not so wide as to allow hot air to rush in.
If I wake early enough in the morning I open the hallway door, and the balcony door, and I attempt to vent the hot air that has collected in the hallway. By trying to keep the core of the building cool I hope to keep the top two floors a little cooler.
Idealism
According to my idealism a Minérgie building should be designed to vent hot air in summer, not just to stay warm in winter. Idealistically it would take cool evening and morning air, and flood the building with it in the morning, to keep the building at 25°c or less, without increasing to over 30°c in the afternoon.
Conclusion
I would prefer to have open windows and flowing air than air conditioning. In my experience air conditioned environments can feel stuffy, and when you go back outdoors you are hit by a wall of heat. Las Vegas illustrates this well, as does Stovepipe Wells. A shaded park with trees and a river are comfortable during a heatwave.
Discalimer
My favourite place for air conditioning is a car, in summer. I spent two or more summers driving a car without AC and I called it "The Oven". I believe air conditioning in cars makes sense, when driving at speed, or on avery hot day.

Reading Time: 2 minutes
For several days I have replaced Facebook with Threads and the experience has been good. I have found that the community, so far, is ordinary, rather than geeky, and friendly rather than trolling or flamey.
I have been posting and commenting for a few days now and although four or five comments got me to block individuals the rest of interactions have been good. I feel I should elaborate about blocking. I block if someone is negative, without giving a valid response, if someone is negative and I am likely to be negative back, or if I feel that a defensive response could begin a flame or troll war.
One key advantage of Threads is that it's easy and intuitive to use so luddites, and geeks can use it with the same ease. Mastodon is still for and by geeks, and trolling is and was a serious issue, as is an unpleasant aspect that I will not elaborate on.
I notice that a lot of people enjoy the fresh community feel, and how it feels like a chat. I see people say that it feels more pleasant than Twitter. I could point several dozen times a day that twitter was like that until people became obsessed with having a million followers and hashtags replaced the need for meaningful conversations. That would negate the positivity.
I see that the common problem is still around on Threads. "Threads is social media and social media is fake" and "Threads is nice but I prefer the real world and real people with real interactions". Both of those views have a toxic effect. The idea that people are fake on Threads is damaging to community building. It both encourages to show off rather than be genuine, and discourages others from engaging as deeply as they would.
With the second point about preferring real life and real interactions, the more people join, and the more people are local to where we live, the stronger the sense of community will become. That's why London was fantastic for Twitter, and London and Paris were great for Seesmic.
Months ago it felt as if Threads was a waste of time. Now I feel that it is worth investing time into, to meet new people. We will see how it progresses.

Dear Friends of #Urban Ducks,
This morning, lots of #tufted ducks (pic enclosed) on #Tooting Common. A parakeet on the island pond. Cormorants turning over #oak leaves in the pond. Maybe looking for food underneath, or perhaps thinking of becoming vegans? Very warm and #pleasant. Even saw a #bumblebee.

From May 2020. During lockdown the local #naturalenvironment was able to recover and normalise. This wood in #northamptonshire near our old home is green and lush. Cow Parsley is growing under the trees and the light is filtered through the leaves. The path is clear and inviting. Afterwards when people returned to walk and picnic or play here it became less pleasant with litter and some destruction to the undergrowth and branches #green #pleasant #woodland #naturephotography

#Pleasant, e.g., spending time with a loved one translates into moving towards that experience and person. #Unpleasant, e.g., fear from a passing car, translates into us moving away from the car and experience.
In that sense, human beings are like amoeba, single-celled organisms that optimize their existence by moving towards pleasant and away from unpleasant states. The joy of being #human is that we have more #complexity layered onto this basic process. 🧠🔄 -
This is a personal favorite for my #QuoteSharing today:
“Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, ‘In this world, Elwood, you must be’—she always called me Elwood—‘In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant.’ Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.”
— Elwood P. Dowd(Perfectly played by James Stewart, in the quirky & delightfully amusing movie Harvey.)
