CW: Gross origins of pink lemonade
I read a post about the possibly awful origin of pink lemonade, and I immediately suspected it was an urban myth but…uh…it was actually credible?
There’s no reason to doubt that pink lemonade probably originated in the circus world in the late 1800s USA. But there are two origin stories that are credible.
The first, rather tame one, is that Henry E Allott dropped cinnamon candies into the lemonade supply in the circus he was working for and it became very popular.
The second, grosser one, is that Pete Conklin, brother of Harvey Conklin, the author of “The Ways of the Circus”, supposedly grabbed a tub of LAUNDRY WATER in which some other performer had washed her pink tights to make lemonade. The pink color was a hit.
Anyway, both stories seem kind of like the kind of tall tales you’d hear from circus folk, but they *were* documented in some form or another at the time the drink was invented, so…

Bathroom remodel and pack rat eviction day.
There's been a pack rat under the bathtub and in the wall between the bathroom and my bedroom for years. It got in through the bathtub drain penetration that was never sealed up when they remodeled the place in the '90s.
It finally got too smelly to the point where even though this is not how I want to spend my time, energy and money at the moment, I couldn't ignore it anymore.
First picture is my contractor friend prying the old tub up. Second picture shows the mass of pack rat poop, cactus thorns and nest material that had accumulated under there. The red things are from a bush I have outside called Sophora davidii. It has gorgeous cobalt flowers and beige pods full of bright red seeds. They are not edible, but I think the pack rat just thinks they're pretty.
