  2. Just cleaned out my fountain pens.

Trying to decide which ink to put into my favourite pen… one made a local artisan out of old Ukrainian bog wood.

Which ink should I go with, do you think?

  3. Next Ink Swatch post is Pilot Iroshizuku Kiri-same

One of the only gray inks I own. I haven't used it much, but it's not the ink's fault, I'm just not fond of gray inks.

  4. The misbehaving red Jinhao 20s have been refilled with Diamine Claret. In the course of logging this I realised that the F had had a sink-related accident a while back, which was probably not helping matters. They both seem much happier for the moment.

The Diamine inks I've been using in these are all pretty ancient, and true to its namesake the Claret has definitely thrown a slight sediment, but the Woodland Green has been fairly well behaved so far and I've used the Claret in a Tombow Lucca without problems, so we shall see.

  5. Today's ink swatch post is pretty sweet:

    Diamine Honey Burst

    jimp.ink/2026/08/21/swatch-dia

Another favorite that I use constantly. Though I'm always confused about how to classify its base color. Is it technically orange? Amber? Golden brown?

  6. Some more cat fountain pen sketches! Not a fan of the TWISBI Stub fountain pen, too hard to use!

  7. There was definitely a wee nip in the air this morning. It’s much warmer now of course, but I was reminded that the ‘ber’ months are just around the corner. The tweed days, the brogues and socks days. The vintage raincoat days. I can’t wait.

In quiet anticipation, I’m enjoying some time with Diamine Deep Dark Orange. The pen is my Sailor 1911L.

  8. #fountainpen community take note! If you‘re in need of an ink name this will help. „Brimstone Butterfly“ or „Neck of Eider Duck“ sounds right up FWPs alley (for example)😁

  9. opened a drawer I don't look in often and remembered that I have little glass jars of the most obscenely dangerous art supplies ever created just sitting there, and that I willingly packed these to move across the Atlantic knowing that if they broke, everything I owned would become pink toxic sludge. (... I wrapped them in socks.)

(backstory: "Noodler's Inks" is a small-batch art supply run by a mad chemist with bizarre politics. The pink one is the most obscene neon pink conceivable and it will get EVERYWHERE if I open the bottle. Proctor's Ledge was experimental even by his standards and he warned me, as he personally handed me the bottle irl over a decade ago, that it might destroy any pen or paper it touches. The glass eyedropper I used to try it was permanently stained from a few seconds of contact. It's a weird ugly gray.)

  10. For better or worse, here's what the ink swatches look like up close. My plan is to hang these near a window like a beaded curtain. Yes, they'll look happy but will fade over time, guaranteeing me more fun making new swatches in future. #FountainPen

  11. Something #FountainPen people will understand: having such a great time producing ink swatches!

  12. Disassembled the pair of red Jinhao 20s earlier this week and gave them a good soak. That Diamine Ancient Copper may well have been part of the source of the problems, as @jimp suggested. Also, in the course of the dismantling I discovered that the retaining collar inside the EF unit was distorted, which may not have been helping the refusing to work for more than a couple of words. Anyway, the nib units were thoroughly soaked to remove the ink crud, and for good measure I gave the inside of the section a good rinse as well, before leaving everything to dry for a couple of days.

And then this evening I somehow lost the retaining collar for the F unit, having reassembled it and then taking it apart again to check a nib alignment issue.

I think they're headed for the spares bin, and two more will be on the shopping list for next month's AliExpress run.

I'd note that there seemed to be a lot of ink buildup inside the section, which I think was affecting the seal on the hatch. I'd found the same thing on the green pen filled with Diamine Woodland Green after it had had several fills, presumably from ink getting wiped off each time the hatch is opened and closed, and the seal definitely improved after the ink was washed out.

Anyway, I also cleaned out a Wing Sung 3008, so am now eyeing the box from Van Dieman Ink and wondering which of their bonkers inks to try next. Maybe the Odysseus we were talking about yesterday?

  13. For today's swatch post, here is Pilot Iroshizuku Fuyu-gaki (“winter persimmon”):

    jimp.ink/2026/08/20/swatch-pil

This was my first orange ink and my current favorite. I didn't even know I would like orange inks until I tried it. I have since acquired a few others but good as they may be, they haven't yet outdone Fuyu-gaki.

  16. “Broken arted”
I was holding off on the last dated page of my 2025 planner (there are a few plain graph paper pages to fill still), thinking that I somehow had to make an important or even good drawing…which always ends in putting it off and not drawing. This is the end of the planner more or less…it’s been more than a year to get through it, but isn’t that a metaphor for something or other also?
