@matdevdug my mother has used the same Cross #FountainPen as long as I can remember (40+ years). She recently bought a Pilot Falcon, but I don't remember her buying any others during my lifetime.

They really are generational tools/art.

I am fortunate enough to have friends who enjoy buying me gifts, and lately, they have all independently arrived at the same conclusion, that what I really need is a fountain pen. This is wonderful. I love fountain pens. I love collecting them, cleaning them, and filling them. There is a robust market for beautiful used and new pens that cost next to nothing, and I genuinely treasure every single one.

The trouble is that fountain pens do not die. Their durability isn’t measured in years, but in geological epochs. I’ve been using the same one every day for years, and aside from a few cosmetic scratches, it looks as though it was just unpacked. The longer you use a pen, the more it conforms to the exact shape of your hand and your specific neuroses, so constantly switching them out isn't really something you want to do. I am not exaggerating when I say my Kaweco Sport will outlive me. It will outlive my daughter. It will likely outlive civilization.

Which brings me to my current dilemma. I have a surplus of pristine, immortal writing instruments. I am amassing a hoard of artifacts that I physically cannot wear out. When I die, my daughter is going to inherit my estate, which will consist entirely of forty mostly-full bottles of ink and a hundred fountain pens. The irony is she’ll probably just pick up a Bic to sign the paperwork liquidating it all. #fountainpen

Another super high quality red that is good for times when a darker red is better than brighter. This lives in my Pilot Custom 74 and gets frequent use.

I have some other dark reds coming up that might unseat it, though!

This is my usual standard true "blue" (not blurple) ink. The is also the ink of which I've come closest to using up a whole bottle. Granted it's only a 30ml bottle, but it's getting hard to fill pens out of it. Soon I'll have to syringe fill out of it, use an inkwell, or use my TWSBI snorkel.

Other people: Baystate Blue is a really cool color, but you kind of have to treat it like toxic waste.

Now swatched Odysseus. The Van Dieman shimmer inks really do have a problem with the shimmer settling instantly in the bottle, which makes it impossible to get consistent results. Base colour is a very nice deep teal, shimmer pink-purple.

I'm not getting the same results on Clairefontaine 90gsm vellum as VDI show on their website with I think Tahoe - the shimmer isn't multichromatic.

Today's ink swatch is Diamine Oxford Blue

This is one extraordinarily dark blue. I like it, and I usually keep it in one of my Hongdian M2 pocket pens. It's easy to mistake for black ink in a thin nib like an EF, but when you look closer or the light hits it right, it's definitely blue.
