  1. The BBC is breaking a 20 year habit of mine... so I apologize that I am posting about this everytime it happens, but this is kind of a big deal in my world. BBC was my source for world news. I have never, ever, been prevented from reading a print news article on its website until this month.

Now.. they want me to subscribe.

In my opinion, the decline and death of true public broadcasting in the (english speaking) world — I've seen it in the UK, the USA, and Canada, I can't speak to other countries — is contributing to the decline of democracy in those places.

If only those who can afford to read the news have access to the news, then less people will be able to be informed, regardless of any editorial leanings.

  8. BWAHAHAHA! #NigelFarage will not be attending the vote count in Clacton because of some nebulous "threat," no doubt the threat of having to stand next to a bin.

  9. Polls have just opened in the #Clacton by-election.

A record 34 candidates are standing for the seat held by Nigel Farage, who called a vote amid sleaze allegations. The major parties are not contesting what they call a "stunt".

As ever, polls close at 10pm.

  10. ‘Most people who start out in the world she knew never make it out. She insists she did so only because political decisions were made in a time of relative plenty to fund the kind of social services that were there to help her. Many of those services, in Ireland and the UK, have since been cut.’ theguardian.com/commentisfree/

  12. The people of Clacton may not come through, but Farage will still have had to run against a bin. And the bin will still have received a sizeable chunk of the vote.

  13. For the first time in over a year, current polling is suggesting that Labour would be the largest party if an election were to be held today. But they would still be some way away from an overall majority.

The Burnham Bounce is a good start for Labour, but they're going to need much more.
