Journalist Arrested While Documenting Legally Contested #Enbridge #Line5 Construction
by #UnicornRiot, Posted on September 17, 2026
#AshlandCounty, #Wisconsin – "Police arrested video journalist and Unicorn Riot contributor #RiverAkemann while he was documenting Enbridge Line 5 construction on August 24. He was monitoring fish in a creek where Enbridge lacks necessary authorization to install its #pipeline. He received four misdemeanor charges and was released later that day. The charges include #DisorderlyConduct, #trespassing, unlawful assembly, and resisting arrest.
"Canadian oil giant Enbridge has a secretive deal with Ashland County to reimburse the sheriff’s department to act as private security. Enbridge is paying police using the #WisconsinCountiesAssociation , a lobbying group, as the pass through. The Association is not subject to state open records laws. The public won’t know how much Enbridge is paying law enforcement or how the money is being spent.
"Multiple groups are suing Canadian oil giant Enbridge for proceeding with Line 5 construction without required property interests at 49 water crossings. Plaintiffs include the #BadRiverBand of #LakeSuperiorChippewa and multiple #environmental organizations."

If passed, Mark Carney's proposal 'would be the most sweeping rollback of environmental protections ever.'
4 days until Parliament resumes. Contact your MP now, before the vote happens, and tell them to oppose this bill:

Reminder: just 4 companies dominate Alberta's tarsands — Canadian Natural Resources, Cenovus, Imperial Oil & Suncor. All are majority foreign-owned (~75%), with ~60% of shares held by Americans.
Paying for a new pipeline to service these American interests — in the middle of a #ClimateCrisis, during a #TradeWar — would be a deeply stupid thing for Canadians to do.

"It’s been a tumultuous summer in Canada. Heatwaves, floods and fires have swept across Canada and around the world. Many of these extreme weather events, including the European heat waves that claimed an estimated 10,000 lives and the terrifying jökulhlaups (glacial collapse) in Nepal would have been virtually impossible without human-caused climate change."
Against this backdrop, while much of the world is racing toward increasingly affordable renewable energy, Mark Carney "appears determined to run the other way by doubling down on fossil fuels."

'New Polling Shows Federal Pipeline Plans Hurting Government’s Popularity'
Carney's 'plans to subsidize a new oil pipeline and roll back environmental safeguards are hurting government support in key federal ridings'
In every riding polled, 50–59% were less likely to support an MP who backs taxpayer funding for another oil pipeline; 46-58% would be less likely to support a Liberal MP if the government proceeds with pipelines without assessing their environmental impacts:
-
"At a moment when climate change is accelerating, biodiversity is declining, and public trust in institutions is under strain, Canadians need stronger safeguards, not weaker ones":
-
'Prime Minister Carney says Canada cannot afford to meet its climate targets. But what we really cannot afford is to spend tens of billions of taxpayer funds on a new pipeline project during a climate crisis.'

'Canadians are struggling to afford rent and the cost of living, and need more investment in education, transit and health care.'
"Carney is doing the opposite of that (…). He is selling our public resources without any guaranteed returns and at the same time growing industries that will push the world towards greater war and climate catastrophe."

“A lot of the things (Carney) has done is to give himself and his cabinet sweeping powers and avoid public oversight,” she told the Star. “His whole major project agenda is ‘How can I keep American investors happy’ — because the largest contingent of people at this investment summit (in Toronto), 33 of the companies are American — so it’s still about keeping American investors happy while gutting environmental safeguards here.”

'The Japanese capital's high-rise business districts are often described as "concrete jungles" because of their stark urban landscape, and have increasingly been cited as a contributor to the heat island effect. In recent years, however, more greenery has begun appearing in the Otemachi area close to Tokyo Station, creating pockets of cooler air.'
'On a day when the ground surface beside the intersection reached 47.3 C, producing intense reflected heat, the surface temperature inside the forested area was 31.9 C, while that of the nearby sidewalk was 32.2 C.'
