Canadians: My friend @Taffer has made a great list of alternatives to US tech, check it out & help update it if you know of additional options!

@stellarsarah I don't blame the Canadians for saying " #ElbowsUp ". The languages spoken in a country are not for the US to decide and it is quite reasonable to expect documentation sold with goods in that country to be translated into languages commonly spoken in that country.
The yanks don't like it when Chinese made goods come into the country with only Simplified Chinese documentation… why should the French-speaking Canadians be happy with English-only docs?

Oh snap. Finally found a use for #AI lol.
Pasted the Merchant column from my credit card statement, had it identify American companies & suggest Canadian alternatives. 😎

I want to emphasize this one point that I suspect many Americans do not appreciate:
“the US narrow merchandise trade deficit only exists because the US buys so much of its energy from Canada. Canada fuels American growth, supplying 99 percent of their natural gas imports, 85 percent of their electricity imports, 60 percent of their crude oil imports. I don’t think they want us to stop sending any of that energy.” - PM Mark Carney
I don’t mean you, our highly informed FediFolk, but the bulk of Trump supports, I would hazard a guess, don’t have any idea. They should think very carefully about this.

Anglophone Canadians woke up today furious that Americans would complain about Quebec's language laws. How dare they? That's *our* job! #ElbowsUp #ElbowsWayUp

Post for people planning to buy an E-reader:
I own a Kobo. Some may not consider it a Canadian brand, but it started in Canada, and their brand's headquarter is still in Toronto, Ontario.
Really good stuff.

Prime Minister Mark Carney: Why I Rejected Trump’s Trade Deal
“So last evening, I instructed our negotiators to return to Ottawa. We cannot accept what they’ve offered, and we will not give what they’ve asked. Over the past year, the US has imposed a series of tariffs that violate its commitment under our agreement with them in Mexico, so-called CUSMA. The United States has continually changed the rationale for these actions, from fentanyl to taxes on US tech giants, to certification of US aircraft, to the sharing of tolls of a bridge that Canada built and paid for, to our dairy policy, to provincial decisions not to sell American alcohol during the trade war, to a television advertisement that quoted Ronald Reagan, to smoke from wildfires while they threatened our communities.”

Lest anybody think that this was an easy decision for the government or pretend that we can only focus on dunking on Trump, Mark Hislop has a pretty good video essay on why the Canadian government's decision was necessary and what is now on the line for us.

Tough, measured & clear-eyed talk from our Prime Minister today. 💪 Nice to see a backbone & integrity in our leadership.
Also noticed the improvement in his #French language skills.

“Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed support for Mr. Carney’s plan to impose countertariffs. He also said in a statement that the federal government should provide support for affected businesses and workers.
NDP Leader Avi Lewis said the Prime Minister was right to walk away from the negotiating table.
“I believe Canadians are united in this crucial moment, on this crucial point: no deal is better than a bad deal,” he said in a statement. “Accepting a deal that would lock in pointless, destructive tariffs and undermine our ability to regulate big tech would have been disastrous for our workers, industries and sovereignty. PM Carney read the room by rejecting the Americans’ offer.””
-
“Prime Minister Mark Carney said his team walked away from trade negotiations Friday after the American side made unacceptable requests that would have infringed on Canadian sovereignty.
Speaking with reporters Saturday morning on Parliament Hill, Mr. Carney offered several examples of U.S. demands that Canada could not accept, including the fine print related to potential agreements on steel, aluminum and autos, and language that he said would have restricted Canada’s trade negotiations with other countries.
“There were some things we wouldn’t do. We were not prepared to compromise Canada’s sovereignty or to undermine key industries,” he said. “In short, they asked too much, and they offered too little.””

“The tariffs announced last night by President Trump on many Canadian goods are being imposed under s.338 of the so-called Smoot Hawley Act. They have not been used in 96 years in this way.
They have been imposed by Presidential proclamation, which is how Trump rolls and rules these days.
As the Canadian comes home this morning, they can hold their heads high. Canada couldn’t sign a deal the Americans tried to change at the last minute. Ask anyone who has done business with Donald Trump. That’s how he does it.“

“Prine Minister Mark Carney said in a statement that while important progress was made during the trade talks, he said he has decided to suspend trade negotiations and directed Canada’s negotiators to return to Ottawa.
“They have worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute. However, last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal,” he said.” -
Now that the trade war is intensifying, a reminder about what outdoor companies are US and which ones aren’t:

Still the only thing I agree with #DougFord on. Remember, Crown Royal, 40 Creek, Wisers, Collingwood, Alberta Premium...they are all owned by foreign businesses. If you're going to #BuyCanadian, buy #Local #Craft
