...enhanced by trauma, grief & shame... The last few months of Arwen's life, she dealt with several health issues. I was so happy for her, when her very nasty ear infections finally were gone. It had taken several months, the poor thing. And I don't know how long she'd been dealing with them before that, as she barely showed any signs. But all the mistakes I made with Arwen, missing out on such important things concerning her health... Partially due to Arwen doing her very best to hide her pains and discomforts from me, because she wanted to support me, and not have me worrying too much over her 😢 . And partially because I was being too self-centered, too busy with my own health issues that were going on. I still have nightmares, very bad flashbacks, and moments when I just burst out in tears over what happened in early July 2025. In reality, they contribute to low self-esteem and can result in depression, anxiety, addictions, and troubled relationships. Sometimes, we become mired in a cycle of self-condemnation followed by self-justification. Or we get stuck in self-judgment indefinitely. At times, we defend against guilt and shame by denying responsibility for our actions in an attempt to preserve self-respect.
I propose that the natural mechanism for learning from mistakes is regret, which leads to mourning and growth. Nonviolent Communication provides us with an elegant process to learn from actions we lament."
