  1. a few weeks ago i saw this motorola cybersurfr cable modem from 1999/2000 at a thrift shop. it had no power supply, and i didn't see the point of buying another hunk of e-waste to let rot on my shelf.

the thought of that poor Shaw @Home modem ending up in a landfill kept bugging me, so i went back and picked it up 😅

if you don't recognize this particular modem, it's because it had a rather limited rollout - it is pre-DOCSIS and uses a proprietary motorola CDLP system (read here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_mo)

it has a funny design - it's built to use *either* cable for upstream/downstream, *or* cable for downstream and a telephone modem for upstream. this particular modem can do 10mbit down, and 1.5mbit up over cable.

it took some time to open up without breaking anything. while there are no screws hidden under the rubber feet, there was a security screw hidden under the cybersurfr sticker on the front (pic 2). even more interesting, it was a type of security bit that i've never seen before: five-point torx with a hole. i've got about 50 security bits in my toolset, and none of them match it. in the end, i slid a 2mm flathead into two corners of the screw and it was just enough traction to make it turn

i had a strong suspicion it had some neat chips on the pcb, and i wasn't disappointed. as suspected, it has a Motorola 68000-based processor doing all the heavy lifting. it's a Freescale 68302 which has a 68k core, and a bunch of extra modules to facilitate network communications.

the big SONIC-T chip is the ethernet controller, running at 25mhz, which is a 10mbit interface.

i'm fascinated that the pcb is rather underpopulated given its size, and it looks to have been built to fit the case, rather than case built to fit the pcb. it's almost the exact size of a classic Hayes modem, and this makes me think the designers sized it that way intentionally.

hopefully some day i'll find a matching power supply, which unfortunately uses a big ugly DIN-5 plug without any voltage info.

  3. My weather data brain is getting frustrated with how long the Edmonton area radar (CASCV) has been out of commission.

  4. Maybe this - the elevendieth-hundredth time we've looked into this - maybe this time the numbers will finally add up...

...to see it would recover the cost of all the studies and reports we've done on this subject to date...

Or, y'know, we could just, like, fund transit properly so we don't have to rely on fares to keep the system running.

  7. Personally I think there will NOT be "record numbers of participants" next year, at the 2027:

    👟 "Edmonton Ultra Marathon"
🕵🏼 "Edmonton Mystery Distance ''Marathon'' "
👩🏼‍⚖️ "Edmonton We're Actually Not Sure if We're Still Allowed to Legally Call it a Marathon?"
🥇"Edmonton, Totally a Boston Qualifier, unless we Get The Distance Wrong Again Marathon"

  8. I was a little slow getting out for planned errands yesterday, but I was rewarded with gorgeous sunset skies on my walk home.

It was getting rather humid as the temperature dropped off & there were swarms of little gnats, but I managed to get inside before it got completely dark and the vampires (🦟) came out in full force.

(For #YEG folks: Photos are looking west across 111 St, north of Southgate mall. First shot is from the parking lot in between Tim's and Rexall. The panorama is a half hour later and a half km farther north, where the LRT dips into a tunnel, hidden between all those trees in the street median.)

  9. Update: According to @Daveography, the Funicular is currently RUNNING for daily walks, bikes, or any active commute. Perfect time to roll out and enjoy the ride!

  11. Does anyone here in the #YEG #beer-loving group want to go to this barrel fest on the Fall equinox? I went about a dozen years ago, and it was awesome.
