CW: YEG Oct 10-11 Music, 8/🧵
Amelia's #YEGMusic Picks
Edit: Better late than never! These are shows that caught my eye, that I can recommend, or that I think might have fans among my followers. Check out https://yeginsider.com/ for more comprehensive listings of music shows big & small.
Sat, Oct 10 (late night shows you can still get to tonight):
Bluesy acoustic rock from Kenneth David at Duggan's Boundary Pub. 9pm, no cover, 18+.
Alt-country-rock with a twist, as Sparrow Blue perform at Double Dragon in a filmed concert for a (unspecified) horror film. 10pm, $12, 18+. (And I assume you'll have to sign some sort of release waiver for the film.)
Sun, Oct 11:
Afternoon folk with a message & some laughs, from Paula Kirman at Frank's Pub. 2pm, no cover.
Long weekend party-rock, plus improv?, from Chris Mena & The Smokes and Atomic Improv, at Rocky Mountain Ice House. 8pm (doors), $17, 18+.

Edmonton! It's October! Well into it, actually. I've been tired & busy, but here's some suggestions for the rest of the month!
The festivals are mostly moving indoors, with film & books a focus.
The Canadian Finals Rodeo end this (Thanksgiving) weekend, with its associated agricultural expo & country music showcases.
October is also the season of haunted houses & other seasonal displays including Pumpkins After Dark in Borden Park ($19-26 adult general admission), Dark at Fort Edmonton Park ($50), and Deadmonton at the old Edmonton Sun building (47 St @ 93 Ave, $50+up).
And because it's never the wrong season for Pride, this is Queer History Month in Edmonton.

I've spent a lot of time this year at the River City Revival House, in the basement of the Starlite Room, a building that has housed music venues for decades, the original Citadel Theater before that, and a Salvation Army temple originally.
I have no idea how old this piano is or which famous musicians might have played it. It is currently parked in the washroom, neglected, out of tune, with some keys that don't sound at all and other keys that won't stop ringing when you release them. It is mostly decoration.
But it can still be played, and the washroom acoustics are more gorgeous than my phone can capture. On a break from the main jam in the bar, Shane & Teemu here started up a brief 4-hands collaboration.

Edmonton! It's September! Summer music series are wrapping up, but the indoor schedules are getting busier. The theatre community is recovering from The Fringe & prepping the first of their main season productions.
Festivals are getting smaller, but still numerous. I particularly like the colourful art & mellow music at Kaleido but maybe you'd prefer to rock out at Purple City (now with more free shows & wrestling!).
There are also lots of hyperlocal festivals; check out the list of Community League Day events to see if your neighbourhood has something happening, and there's more in the list of Alberta Culture Days sponsored events.
It's also the return of spring/fall weekly activities in Churchill Square, including the Live at Lunch concerts on Tuesday & Thursdays (noon-1pm) and Latin dance lessons Tuesday evenings (6-8pm).

Edmonton! The weather may be unusually brisk this week, but it's still August & there's lots of summer left to enjoy. Here's your monthly events calendar, part 2, taking you through to Labour Day weekend.
The big festival of the next few weeks is the Fringe (Aug 13-23) which is really multiple different festivals in one: music, theatre, busking & more. I will not attempt to summarize all the theatre options, but follow the #YEGfringe hashtag for folks' reviews (and leave your own!). And remember that there will be holdovers after the festival official wraps up.
But of course there's lots going on beyond the fringe, too. Music festivals, food festivals, dragon festivals, pride festivals; some big budget, but lots of free events large & small.

Having a cool time on a hot afternoon at Musicians for Canada at Hawrelak Park. Loving the improvements to the park and amphitheatre. Loving that it’s a dry event with a mocktail bar. Loving the Canadian unity vibes. Up with Canada! Alberta = Canada Forever. 🇨🇦 #yeg #alberta #canada #yegmusic #unity

Hey #YEGmusic fans! Another new website for you to bookmark:
https://yeginsider.com/Like the Double Lunch listings I shared recently, YEGInsider attempts to collate all Edmonton area music listings in one place. But it goes beyond a list of links, with tags & filters and extra information about venues. It also includes weekly jams & open mics, and it looks like they're hoping to create a directory of services for bands & promoters.
The glossy website has a few layout bugs & it's clear he's using AI tools to extract information from poster images & such, but this was not a weekend vibe code project; Tony Ruffo has been working on this site & database for many months (years?), and I'm glad to finally see it live.

Edmonton! July is just getting started(-ish) and there's lots to do! Festival & patio season are in full swing, and the weather is almost behaving. Just remember to come armed for the vampires (🦟) that will come out once the sun goes down.
There are lots of weekly outdoor concert series in July & August, at patios & in parks. I've added an extra section specifically for those, arranged by day of the week. (I'll still highlight some of my top picks in the music calendar.)

Lovely weather for outdoor music in Churchill Square! (Ok, it's a bit breezier than I expected, but otherwise perfect. But I still brought emergency rain gear along with my big sun hat.)
Forecast is great for tomorrow (Friday) too. Get out & enjoy it, #YEGmusic fans!
Edit: Schedule!
Edit 2: Friday forecast now only good until 5pm. Take some flex time if you can & go out for a long lunch or early afternoon!

Well, those scary weather warnings are still in effect for tonight, but for this evening the rain has decided to circle around the city.
I was sitting at the piano, trying to figure out the opening riff to "I Can't Stand the Rain" & noticed it was actually a pleasantly bright daylight outside. Decided I could squeeze in a quick grocery run today after all (with a splurge on a bus fare to get there & back a little faster).
When I was at the Rooster Kitchen open stage on Thursday, host Barry Westerlund was half-heartedly urging folks to come out to his set at The Works festival (outdoor) stage in Churchill Square tonight, while also suggesting they bring a boat, life jacket, and maybe wet suit if they do. But he must have spun some wizardry because he had wonderful weather for his set. (Whether anyone was there to hear it, I don't know...)
There still, however, might be a wall of water arriving for the Tsunami Brothers who are playing now & until 10pm.

I've added the Double Lunch "Every Show in Edmonton We Can Find" music listings to my bookmarks. I am clearly not the only one who has been frustrated by the lack of a single place to find this information!
https://www.doublelunch.com/music-listingThey've also got a number of other resources, primarily aimed at helping indie musicians who are trying to book tours or get grants. Some will also be of interest to music fans, including the cross-Canada music festival list:
https://www.doublelunch.com/festivalsNeither list currently includes annotations about music genres or prices or such, but just having links all in one place is a great start!
