Got a response from "the office of" my member of parliament regarding my concerns about #BillC22 and it was really disappointing.

I decided to take a deep breath before responding. It's pretty clear that the Liberal Party of Canada is going to do whatever it wants to do, and working Canadians couldn't be a lower priority.

I think all that elbows up talk is about ensuring the Canadian investment class can still prosper no matter what happens south of the border.

After running a small-time, non-federated #XMPP server for 2.5 years (#prosody), I've decided to decommission it.

What I loved about it was the ability to make the attachment sizes large - 100MB - then it allowed a nice long-format "video memo pen-pal" experience with my friends. We would video ourselves for a few minutes, checking in with each other and expressing how we're doing. It was a spiritual exercise: how was our meditation going lately? What were we meditating on, as an object of meditation? That 100MB attachment size allowed up to 9ish minute video memos, as long as the video-recording  resolution was turned down from the too-high default.

Now that #Canada is intent on rushing #BillC22 through, not caring what the #infosec experts have to say - they've pretty much made the decision for me, to use a #Deltachat server instead. This is to get a Canadian server on Canadian soil, with the ability to conveniently switch servers (add another "relay", in case one disappears). #DataSovereignty #ElbowsUp

With #XMPP, the encryption is unfortunately optional, and even downright problematic in group chats. #Deltachat succeeded in making the E2E encryption required and automatic. A step up, which today's politics all but required. #OpenSource

(4) No obligations under this Act are to be construed as compelling an electronic service provider to decrypt, or to ensure that an authorized person is able to decrypt, any information that is encrypted by a person to whom the electronic service provider provides services, unless the encryption was provided by the electronic service provider and the provider possesses the information necessary to decrypt the information."

My intpretation: if the service provider has the means to decrypt the data then the provider can be forced to decrypt the data.

Our bread and butter is non-partisan pro-privacy and expression work. But is #BillC22 an issue for environmental activists? Victims of cyber-stalking by exes? Any marginalized community that fears state persecution?

Yes, yes, and yes. But that message comes most credibly from those embedded in those groups.
