I'm probably preaching to the choir with many of my followers, but if you're Canadian and concerned about what Bill C-22 will do to #encryption and #privacy (and you have an attention span longer than 30 seconds), check out the video I made on the subject back in 2019.
It's sad that this is still relevant and needed here in 2026, but I guess that's living in the darkest timeline for you.

"Bill C-22's Groundhog Day: Why the Government's Dismissal of Signal, Apple and the U.S. Congress Concerns Runs Back the Disastrous Online News Act Playbook"
https://www.michaelgeist.ca/2026/05/bill-c-22s-groundhog-day-why-the-governments-dismissal-of-signal-apple-and-the-u-s-congress-concerns-runs-back-the-disastrous-online-news-act-playbook/Quote: "Secure messaging service Signal yesterday became the latest company to warn that Bill C-22, the lawful access bill, could force it to leave the Canadian market rather than comply with provisions it says would compromise its end-to-end encryption and create new cybersecurity risks."
Quote: "The pattern will be familiar for anyone who lived through the Online News Act. Supporters of then-Bill C-18 dismissed warnings from Meta and Google that the bill's mandated payments for news links were unworkable and that they would comply by blocking the links in Canada ... But by the end of summer 2023, Meta had stripped news links from Facebook and Instagram, an approach that continues to this day."

#TechnologyThis DW documentary shows what could happen if #BillC22 is passed and people with nefarious intent get access to the data.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Y07j3hXAI-g
The location data in the documentary was collected via social media apps.
Had people not enabled location data or else not used those apps then their data would not have been captured and sold. Some of the people in the doc were trying to hide from stalkers/spies in countries they fled.
Currently it should be possible to turn off location data on your phone or not use any app that uses location data.
With C22 the spooks would be able to capture your location data even if you use a flip phone.
BillC22 and a data breach is all it would take for your privacy to be threatened since the location data would be gathered by the telcom and there is nothing you could set on your phone to stop the collection.
Scary stuff folks.

#TechnologyDo you enjoy surfing the net and using your smartphone without fear of being spied on?
Maybe you dislike politics but if you wish to maintain your privacy and Charter rights then you might wish to pay attention to what is happening with Bill C22.A great many privacy and security advocates have spoken out against the bill.
Here is a petition that helps explain what is going on.
https://action.openmedia.org/page/188754/action/1Bill C22 has passed second reading and is currently being studied in committee but could be sent to the Senate after third reading which could happen soon.
The Libs have a majority so they can ram the bill through the House Of Commons.
The Senate might rubber stamp it so that it becomes law. There is still time to stop it if enough Canadians push back.
The above petition is a good way to start.Another way to help is to help spread the message all over the world.

For the forseeable future I shall be tooting on topics related to the Charter and privacy which includes #BillC22 and #AgeGate.
IMO Bill C22 is the greatest threat to our privacy and Charter rights that I have seen since the Cons introduced Bill C30 in 2012 (which was withdrawn after much protest).
The spooks (Cdn spies and thier contractors) wish to create a database containing up to one year's worth of your meta data - internet search history and mobile phone contacts with location data, something that could be used to track you.
On the fediverse I recommend following these accounts, each of whom has been stong proponents of privacy since before Bill C30 (14 years ago).
@mgeist a well noted privacy lawyer who has been providing invaluable privacy information for decades.
@OpenMediaOrg an organization that has been campaigning for privacy and internet rights for Canadians for a great many years.

A great read from From 2026-3-19
"Is the Power to Preserve Everyone's Metadata Constitutional?"Quote: "If the power to compel service providers to retain metadata does become law, and police make use of that data, persons accused of a crime will challenge the law. And when they do, it should be struck down."
https://www.robertdiab.ca/posts/metadata-c22/
People will begin to speculate with questions like: What if the real intent was just to get certain pieces of spy-gear into telcos and keep monitoring even if a charter challenge fails (classify it under national security)?
How many people will believe that it could be plausible?
Trust dies. The people pushing C22 through are lawyers and should know that it would fail a charter challenge.
The libs are setting themselves up for a social media conspiracy thoery battle for the next election.
People will always remember when their charter rights are threatened.I still remember a similar spy Bill C30 from 2012 and that was a mess.

One might suspect that Charter rights would be a very important issue for the NDP.Second reading happened 2026-4-20, at least one NDPer must have voted then.

Earlier today I searched through all of the audio segments I could find at CBC "As It Happens" and "The Current" radio shows and I could not find anything about BillC22.
There was a small number of web page posts at cbc.ca/news about the bill.
IMO the public was not well informed about Bill C22.
Maybe that is what the gov wanted?
I do not regularily check the parliament web pages for new legislation.
I found out accidently via an odd post on Mastodon that managed to get enough boots to make it into the general feed.
I believe C22 should be delayed until more people have time to consider the consequences.
IMO if more people know what was in the bill that there would be more outrage.I think the lack of proper notice is grounds to take more time, especially in the Senate (if it gets there).
If C22 passes as is then we might never fully recover all of the Charter rights and freedoms we had in 2025.
I feel betrayed by the PMMC government.
