  1. Why yes. I did give a speech in the Senate about the joy of sex. A speech about sex and libraries, and the dangers of trying to censor what our teens can read and watch and do online. In a world full of digital risk, we need to teach our kids media literacy, and sexual literacy too. youtu.be/mEsf_qQzvpg?si=dCTTLI #ableg #abpoli #Bill28 #porn #bookbans #cdnpoli #BillS209 #SenateofCanada #AI

  6. No. No. Nine times no. Five very smart Albertans, from across the province, and across the political spectrum, tell me why they think Danielle Smith’s nine referendum questions are racist, or useless, or both. And we ask - why is there no No campaign as yet?? 16. Senator Senior’s amendment to Bill C-12 passed - a nice surprise. I had less luck with the amendment I proposed tonight, to try to put some meaningful parliamentary oversight on the mass cancellations of visa and permanent residency cards. I thought my amendment was elegant. But it may have been too clever for its own good! youtu.be/AFPJWRPW9O4?si=toJ-9T #C12 #BillC12 #immigration #cdnpoli #Canada #SenateofCanada

  17. Today, I was a guest on the Borderlines immigration law podcast, to talk about Bill C-12 and the role of the modern Senate in reviewing difficult legislation. With a conclusion that looks at Danielle Smith’s anti-immigrant discourse. youtu.be/sgaggc8uv_Q #BillC12 #C12 #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #ableg #Alberta #Canada

  18. Next up - Bill C-12. Thursday night, I rose in the Senate to call out the so-called “reforms” to our immigration & refugee systems, which have been condemned by civil society groups across Canada. I was the only Senator to give a speech in opposition to the bill - perhaps because, as an Albertans, I have already witnessed the dangers of demonizing new Canadians and asylum seekers. youtu.be/U1QAtaBy-sM?si=np2nmi #C12 #BillC12 #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #SenCa #Alberta #ableg #abpoli #DanielleSmith #immigration #ICE

  19. I’m so sorry - I’m a bit behind on my Mastodon posting. Last week was crazy busy. So let me give you a recap of all the trouble I’ve been making in the Senate. 21. Some Canadians are counting down the days till Christmas. Some are counting the nights till Hanukkah. But in the Senate, we're counting down the sitting days until we receive Bill C-4, which will, among many other things, exempt federal political parties from provincial privacy law. At QP today, I had questions. I think anyone who cares about privacy rights will want to listen. youtu.be/ZB501otrMwQ?si=jbJj62 #BillC4 #C4 #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #LCJC #privacy #BillC2 #BillC8 #BillC12 #privacy

  22. A new episode of Alberta Unbound! And it's a great one - my conversation with Calgary-based Sudanese-Canadian stand up Faris Hytiaa. I recently discovered his comedy - and it is so fresh and funny and unexpected, as is his whole life story. We did this interview a bit differently, and interwove some of his material with our questions. If you're not already a fan - well, you have a great comedian to discover. But our conversation covered everything from the politics of Sudan, to the politics of Alberta, to the meaning of community and identity. This really is a very special episode. podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/ #Calgary #Alberta #yyc #Sudan #abpoli #AlbertaUnbound #SenateofCanada #Lethbridge #ULethbridge #CBC

  27. What can we do to protect health care providers and first responders from assault on the job? Bill S-233 tries to address the problem with tougher sentences after conviction. But that won't help one bit, if people aren't charged and prosecuted. And that won't happen if we don't end the culture of silence and stoicism, that prevents charges from being laid. Here's my own take on Bill S-233 - well-meaning legislation that will, I fear, accomplish very little to solve an urgent problem in our health care system. youtu.be/XgD_admKvNs?si=vqM-ez #SenateofCanada #cdnpoli #HealthCare #LCJC #Canada

  28. Today, senior executives from CBC/RadioCanada came to testify before the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications. I had the chance to ask a lot of questions. But I made sure to ask why the CBC is still committed to X - and why they haven't investigated Mastodon (and Bluesky). 34. Alberta Unbound fans can also stream my conversation with Thomas Lukaszuk directly from my Senate webpage. 35. Magazine deadlines being what they are, I actually wrote this in June, weeks before Danielle Smith and the UCP began their abhorrent attacks on immigrants and refugees. 36. This afternoon, I rose in the Senate to speak to Bill C-5, particularly the Building Canada Act. In this speech I tried to contextualize my concerns about what this bill, which fast-tracks "projects of national interest" could mean for environmental protection, Indigenous rights, and project certainty. And I tell Albertans bluntly that no one will build a pipeline in the shadow of separatist threats. youtu.be/vsYGr8O3BAM?si=8WqtMc #SenateofCanada #cdnpoli #C5 #C69 #ableg #Alberta

  39. An essential episode of Alberta Unbound.
