  5. This afternoon I had the pleasure of presenting to city council on the subject of their review, and city administration's recommendation, to close down the Free Fare Zone.

The free fare zone is a program that has a set of stations that bisects the heart of my neighbourhood in downtown Calgary be usable at no cost, to the great benefit of local residents, community partners, businesses and tourists. #yyc #yyccc #Calgary

  10. ☀️ Albedo vs. Surface Temperature: Why a "Bright" City Isn't Always Cooler

❗ Key findings from the current stage of research:
🔹 Vegetation (NDVI): Based on modeling results, biomass health accounted for approximately 40% of the variance in Calgary’s temperature regime in 2025.
🔹 Albedo (Reflectance): While it is commonly assumed that high surface reflectance reduces heat absorption, satellite data (broadband shortwave albedo) reveals a far more nuanced picture.

    🔥 The Seton Anomaly
The scatter plot clearly shows a wide distribution of values. The community of Seton is a particularly striking example: despite its high average albedo (likely due to light-colored soils at construction sites and new roofing materials), the area remains in a "heat zone" (classified as Warm Background in my model).

❗ Albedo plays a role, but it is not the dominant factor in Calgary’s environment.

  12. 🌿 Can trees cool #Calgary ? Summer 2025 data from 193 neighborhoods reveals a tipping point: 0.34 NDVI.
🔹 Below 0.34: Isolated trees in "concrete jungles" provide ~0 cooling ROI.
🔹 Above 0.34: Cooling "clicks in" & efficiency jumps.
Stats: Vegetation explains 40% of heat; 60% is locked in asphalt & design. Where we can't plant, we must use high-albedo materials.

  13. 💻 I took several completely independent datasets and "pitted" them against each other. One of the results is shown in this chart: the more "concrete" (roads, buildings, parking lots) my machine learning model identified in a community, the higher the surface temperature recorded by the thermal sensor.

🔥 The result: Data from different sources confirm one another. The difference in surface temperature between "green" and "concrete" residential areas averages 8–10°C throughout the summer. On certain days, this gap is likely even wider.

📉 This chart shows only established residential communities. If industrial zones were included, the trend would be even more dramatic. While modeling errors certainly exist, the overall physical pattern is undeniable.

  14. 🛰️ This is an RGB composite of derived metrics from Calgary satellite imagery at a 10x10m resolution. Extracting these additional urban environmental indicators significantly enhances the quality of data analysis and, consequently, the decisions based on it. Currently, one version of my Tree Canopy model has achieved 96.8% accuracy, a testament to the high precision of the methodology.

💻 I am now retraining the machine learning model to move beyond analyzing Calgary in large blocks and focus on every individual yard. This will allow us to account for not only large forest patches but also, where possible, every mature tree in the city — including those behind your fence or right under your window. These residential trees are what provide the shade, comfort, and fresh air we all enjoy. My goal is to ensure the final assessment reflects the contribution of every single tree to our environmental quality.

  15. Critical minerals collide with #tourism in B.C. resort town.

A #Calgary based mining company called West High Yield Resources wants to extract #magnesium ore from Record Ridge, about seven kilometres outside of town, and ship it overseas.

West High Yield holds mineral claims over 8,972 hectares at the site — an area 4.6 times bigger than the city of Victoria. In October 2025, the #BCgovernment approved the company’s #mining permit.

Several #Rossland residents say they have been confounded by what they see as abnormalities in the siting and permitting of the mine. Many have united under the banner of the non-profit Save Record Ridge Action Society ( #SRRAC ).

At one point, WHY Resources sought to remove up to 200,000 tonnes of ore a year, but later reduced that to 63,500 tonnes per year — below the 70,000-tonne limit that often triggers an environmental assessment.

In a May 2025 letter to the province, the #Ktunaxa Nation Council argued alongside SRRAC that the mine footprint only dropped by 5.7 per cent, despite a 68 per cent cut in proposed production.

The stated lower production capacity “masks and understates its true capacity” and environmental footprint, added the nation, arguing it’s designed to avoid initial regulatory hurdles and be scaled up later.

SRRAC requested that Ottawa carry out an environmental review of the Record Ridge mine project.

A report issued last month from the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada rejected that request. It found the mine project did not require federal designation, and that existing laws were enough to manage the potential impacts on fish, migratory birds and Indigenous rights.

  16. 🏡 Here is the data analysis for Calgary, Summer 2025. This chart shows the relationship between vegetation density (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST).

🔥 The data reveals a critical "tipping point": vegetation only starts effectively cooling the environment once it reaches a specific density threshold. Below this threshold (the left side of the curve), green spaces stay just as hot as the surrounding concrete.
Sparse or isolated trees don't act as air conditioners—they "burn" in the urban furnace right along with us.

❗ What does this mean for Calgary? Simply planting a few scattered trees isn't enough. To actually move the needle on temperature, we need dense, healthy green belts. Otherwise, it’s just a waste of water and resources.

I processed satellite data from last summer to see how Calgary’s communities handle the heat. It turns out that not all greenery is equal. My research shows a clear "breakpoint" where the density of vegetation actually starts to drop the surface temperature.

  22. To distinguish between "normal" and anomalous surface temperatures in Calgary in 2025, I applied Tukey’s method. The statistical distribution shows a negative skewness (coefficient ≈−0.59).

This highlights a critical phenomenon: the vast majority of the urban area is densely clustered in the warmer temperature range. In contrast, cool refuges (the rivers, reservoir, and dense parks) are statistically scarce, forming a long "tail" on the left side of the plot. In essence, Calgary’s baseline is shifted toward higher temperatures, making Urban Cool Islands a rare and vital resource.

I would like to remind my readers and followers that I am currently preparing a comprehensive article based on these research results. In it, I will explore the ecological and geochemical implications of this thermal distribution. Stay tuned for further updates!
