Taiwan is famous for convenience stores on nearly every corner. But when adjusted for population, the pattern becomes more interesting.
The east coast has a higher convenience store density than southern Taiwan, and Matsu reaches an extraordinary 132 stores per 100,000 people due to its very small population base. 🇹🇼

Più di 20 anni fa lavoravo su dati genomici per cercare pattern.
Già allora esploravo i dati cercando correlazioni e distribuzioni.
Una cosa non cambia: fare le domande giuste 🙂

Taiwan has 14,021 convenience stores as of May 2026, based on my own count using official store locator websites.
7-Eleven dominates with 7,347 stores, followed by FamilyMart with 4,436.
In Taiwan, convenience stores open and close constantly, so the numbers are always changing slightly.

Oh joy, another "dashboard as code" tool with a dash of #YAML and a sprinkle of JSX! 🤖✨ Now, even your AI agents can join in the tedium of creating "standardized" dashboards, because who needs creativity when you have a "builtin semantic layer," am I right? 🙄👨💻 Just what the internet needed, more ways to make boring data look marginally less boring. 🍵💻

In my previous post, I showed the increasing number of German citizens being naturalized in Taiwan.
Looking at total foreign naturalizations from 2016 to 2025, the picture is different. Marriage-based naturalization remains the dominant category every year.
The highest total was recorded in 2017 with 5,366 cases. In 2025, the total was 1,875, including 1,516 marriage-based naturalizations.

More than 23 million people live in Taiwan, but the population is far from evenly distributed.
In fact, about half of the population is concentrated in just a small number of districts, mainly in major urban areas.

New-to-me, from Maps Mania: The Ancestry Dot Map of America. “Like its predecessor, the Ancestry Dot Map uses colored dots scattered across the landscape of the United States. But instead of visualizing race at the individual level, each dot here represents reported ancestries, drawn from the American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates (2024).”

The CHI Papers Explorer is back for #CHI2026! As every year, you can explore all 2,769 papers and events with semantic search.
Search by any topic using similarity (not just keywords), browse paper clusters, and build your personal schedule with the MyPapers feature.
If you find it useful, please boost so others heading to Barcelona can find it too.

#boost :bst:Data visualisation help much appreciated :neocat_reach:
I'm sick of presenting shitty Excel data visualisations as much as I love what eg. D3.js can do. There's some fancy stuff out there but they all require coding to some extent to run or be embedded … all of which proved being beyond me. I need a solution that can interpret simple structured .csv (or .txt or smth similar simple), and outputs vector/bitmap files.
My aim is to create 2D data visualisations (donut chart for data set A, vertical bar chart for data set B). Both data sets are simple tables:
A
NAME (txt) | VALUE (int.)B
NAME (txt) | VALUE (int.) or VALUE (hh:mm:ss)Names are people's names and may run a bit long.
Yes, I do run some CLI stuff regularly but I can't code.
No, I don't want to use AI.
No, I don't want to register for a paid subscription to a capitalist platform.Help and boosts appreciated!

sankeys, instant progress dashboards based on disparate data sources that update themselves -- the visual display of information I've always designed, spent days fighting excel or another analytics package to create, and ultimately failing at ... now they're a 15 minute job in Claude Code (plus a 30 minute audit to make sure the analysis is done accurately).

Bellingcat: Using Bellingcat’s New Open Source Tool to Explore Historical and Spatial Flight Data. “Flight tracking data is an important tool in open source research, but with 100,000 daily flights, it can be difficult to contextualise what a particular aircraft’s movements indicate. Bellingcat has developed a tool called Turnstone to make it easier to visualise historical trends in flight […]

📊 This paper by Crameri et al. from 2020 shows why #color choice in figures matters.
Rainbow 🌈 and red–green colormaps 🛑❇️ can distort gradients, create artificial boundaries, and exclude readers with color-vision deficiency. They quantify the visual error and argue for perceptually uniform, #CVD-friendly scientific colormaps instead.
