My concern is the leadership grow play and behave like leaders. This may take some time. If they do, they’ll win. No doubt“Learn to play patient and safe when needed. They’ve done it in previous seasons. They were unable to find any momentum last season, really at any point, and I guarantee the veterans will remind teammates of that when the preseason begins.”

A reminder that our sports heroes are too often still emotional and cognitive teenagers. They deserve our admiration for athletic abilities. But that’s it.
Parents and coaches, please tell your kids that how pro athletes behave is not necessarily a template for responsible, respectful adult behaviour. I think this is doubly important if your kids are boys. So many awful male role models.

Lots of wishful thinking about how the Oilers lineup to start the season. Most seem to be overlooking that GM and new coach have been very clear about playing the McDrai “nuclear option” regularly. This is nothing new. But it does ask the question about the wing on that top line, and every other line below.

Some are selling a “short preseason, quick decisions” advantage. I’m not buying. Not for these Oilers.
On the upside, compared to last year, few new faces. Coaches familiar with the lineup should, indeed, be able to make solid decisions, quickly. On the downside, they’re all new faces to these new coaches. As I’ve said elsewhere, I expect “training camp” to extend into Oct.1/3

You’re welcome, though I was not in favour of the trade at the time.
Rumour now is that Skinner wanted out of Oilerville. The atmosphere for he and fam was very unhealthy. I was glad to see him appreciated by Penguins fans and media.
As for Jarry, he wasn’t impressed by the laissez-faire defensive play (f-group, not just d-group) in front of him, but was quickly put in his place. Goalies are not allowed to criticize leadership.
We’ll see whether a now-serious/responsible leadership group gives him (and all goalies) the support they need to succeed. -

@buffaloseven @caffeinatedgeek @mike @tedzanzibar D corps were not the problem for Skinner (or Ingram, Jarry, Pickard). F group not playing 200 feet, that was the problem. There were moments last year when that was not the case. Nov 25-Dec 26. In his last five games for Oilers, when F group played as they can, Skinner was .943SV% (5v5).
So yes, his ceiling is high. Plus, he doesn’t take it personally when his team bails on him. The guy has an amazing mental toughness. Super under-appreciated in Oilerville. @caffeinatedgeek @buffaloseven @mike @tedzanzibar As an Oilers fan who is also a Skinner fan it was beyond frustrating how the goalies got blamed for losing SCFs in 2024 and 2025, and a poor November 2025. Goalies were not “the problem.” But all five paid for it in 2025-26. Glad to see Skinner back in Canada. I wish him well with the Jets. If they make to the playoffs, the guy has an amazing clutch record (WIN% in Games 4,5,6,7 notwithstanding the 2024 Game 7 and 2025 Game 6, which losses were not on him).

As I said earlier, I believe McD (among others who’ve invited MB into the fold) will thrive. His 200-ft performance was an embarrassment last year. He covered by allowing goalies to take the blame, then blamed coaching. He (& others) have a lot to prove, with —not against— new coach. I expect an internal McD v Drai competition for Selke. @ElizabethLouise @mike It’s illegal (or, almost) to think about anything but oil & gas in Smith’s Alberta. But I do like the idea of the Edmonton Solar Panels or Wind Turbines as a rebrand. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 That was painful, reliving the agony of impatience that was last fall in Oilerville, a memory triggered by a couple of Lowetide’s comments. These were subsidiary to his main point. But they underline what I’m reading and hearing, every day here in Oilerville. There’s a lot of magical thinking about the coaching change.
My question: Whatever the coach asks for, demands, insists on, how will team leadership respond?
Maybe there’s enough embarrassment and desperation on the part of team leaders this year, to pull the team through? Certainly, the embarrassments of mid-Nov last fall seemed to shock the group into excellence —but only for a month. For 13 games they had the fourth best NHL WIN%, 10th best SV% (.922, 5v5).
There is, again, a lot of change, with not much time to gel. I’m wishin’ & hopin’ there’s more patience in Oilerville this fall than there was last fall.
I wait.

Q is an outlier. NHL average is about three years, last time I looked. Oilers, 2+.
I don’t know how this rate of churn helps build organizational stability. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t.
I do think Q’s time in Chicago speaks to the value, from a Cup-winning perspective, of letting coach and team go through the inevitable ups and downs without threat of firing.
But that requires organizational (and, especially, owner) patience. And especially in hockey-mad/obsessive/fanatic markets.
I imagine the tenure of coach Mike Babcock will be short, here in Oilerville. Regardless of any Cup success. More churn.

Today Sam Pollock is the spiritual father of GMGS Glen Sather.

Let’s see how the two models (get rich v get Cup) play out over the next five years.
McD isn’t here in Oilerville for the money. As long as there’s a good chance to win the Cup, I believe he’s with Drai and Bouch. That chance to win gets better as so many other teams deal with the “get rich” model.Montreal will win multiple Cups in the next decade. Oilers, a couple. The get rich players? Not so many.

Waking up to the news that the #ALLCAPS have traded Connor McMichael away for Jordan Kyrou.
Firstly, I don't mind the trade at all. Kyrou seems like an upgrade, and the first round pick was essentially a steal that we got for moving on from Carlson right; unlikely you get a player of Kyrous ability at that position in the draft also.
McMichael, man. What could have been. He had that one season but fell back pretty hard last year. I wish him nothing but the best, but damn he never quiet hit the highs we thought he could coming out of junior.
