  1. @jimlil @olliethewobbly @hnom That’s one of the arguments for goalies 6.5+ height. One, they may be able to see over the players in front of them. Two, with their height and width they fill up most of the net.
I started watching hockey when only a handful wore masks, and padding was (relative to today’s gear) inconsequential.

  2. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 “I want this kid to f—ing try harder defensively, but he saves himself for offense,” the executive said

In hockey, as in life, people do not like it when others make effort look effortless.

Evan Bouchard is so smart he doesn’t waste effort. Occasional viewers are convinced he’s lazy or dumb, or both. The results don’t matter to them. A couple of awkward giveaways circulating on the internets confirms their opinion (it’s a cottage industry, clipping and sharing Bouchard’s gaffes; there’s no market for the Makar, Hughes, Werenski, Hutson gaffes, so we don’t see that all high-level puck-possession D are taking and losing risks, regularly.)

It’s in the job description of elite offensive D: take risks, be willing to fail to be excellent. They all do. The difference is that some are doing so without seeming effort. They are reviled as lazy. Go Bouch!

  7. It's been about two months since Steve Yzerman was removed as GM of the Red Wings. Since then all we've heard was from two reliable insiders is that neither Draper or Greenberg will be the next GM. I'm not panicking about lack of GM news, it's too early for that, but this isn't reassuring.

  35. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 I believe that one decision by McDavid, to eschew the 1-vs-3 habit in favour of the 200-ft game, will not only lead to a powerful season by the man, it will signal to the team that responsible play is expected, from top to bottom. He knows this. That’s how they got to back to back SCFs. That’s how they put together the only consistent month of play last season, from Nov 26-Dec 25. He’s stubborn (believes he can do it all, himself); he’s also smart, and driven. And, I would imagine, embarrassed for winning yet another Art Ross while his team floundered. I expect a very different season of play this year.

As for his wingers, I like the Podz plus Savoie/Kap suggestion. For Draisaitl, I want Howard for a long stretch. He will learn, and become the winger this team needs. On the other side, Dach? I have great faith in Drai’s talent as a mentor.

  40. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆SLOW START? WHO CARES?
My concern is the leadership grow play and behave like leaders. This may take some time. If they do, they’ll win. No doubt

“Learn to play patient and safe when needed. They’ve done it in previous seasons. They were unable to find any momentum last season, really at any point, and I guarantee the veterans will remind teammates of that when the preseason begins.”

  41. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 LINEUPS?
Lots of wishful thinking about how the Oilers lineup to start the season. Most seem to be overlooking that GM and new coach have been very clear about playing the McDrai “nuclear option” regularly. This is nothing new. But it does ask the question about the wing on that top line, and every other line below.
Is this what it might look like?
    Howard-McD-Drai
    Podz-RNH-Hyman
    Kapanen-Dickinson-Frederic
    Dach-Samanski-Joseph

And, how long before the new coach’s historical practice of running four lines falls prey to the blender, to heavier reliance on the “nuclear option?”
Things will only become clear in October. Until then, we’re all “smoking the drapes,” as Lowetide puts it.

ps. I’m hearing lots of familiar words (balance playing time, responsible play, four lines, identity). And magical thinking that these things have a different meaning with a new coach. Oct in Oilerville will be interesting.

  42. @buffaloseven @caffeinatedgeek @mike @tedzanzibar D corps were not the problem for Skinner (or Ingram, Jarry, Pickard). F group not playing 200 feet, that was the problem. There were moments last year when that was not the case. Nov 25-Dec 26. In his last five games for Oilers, when F group played as they can, Skinner was .943SV% (5v5).
So yes, his ceiling is high. Plus, he doesn’t take it personally when his team bails on him. The guy has an amazing mental toughness. Super under-appreciated in Oilerville. Penguins fans and writers seemed to have liked him, from what I saw. Good luck in Winnipeg, Stu!

  43. @ryan2one3 Just seeing this as I search #Oilers commentary (because: end of August).
As I said earlier, I believe McD (among others who’ve invited MB into the fold) will thrive. His 200-ft performance was an embarrassment last year. He covered by allowing goalies to take the blame, then blamed coaching. He (& others) have a lot to prove, with —not against— new coach. I expect an internal McD v Drai competition for Selke. If one of them actually wins Selke, they’ll both be hoisting the Cup.

  44. @ElizabethLouise @mike It’s illegal (or, almost) to think about anything but oil & gas in Smith’s Alberta. But I do like the idea of the Edmonton Solar Panels or Wind Turbines as a rebrand. I’m sure one Oilers insider would blow a gasket (he’s constantly shilling for the glory of O&G, and his red face suggests the back pressure is already pretty high)
    🏒🥅

  45. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 That was painful, reliving the agony of impatience that was last fall in Oilerville, a memory triggered by a couple of Lowetide’s comments. These were subsidiary to his main point. But they underline what I’m reading and hearing, every day here in Oilerville. There’s a lot of magical thinking about the coaching change.

My question: Whatever the coach asks for, demands, insists on, how will team leadership respond?

Maybe there’s enough embarrassment and desperation on the part of team leaders this year, to pull the team through? Certainly, the embarrassments of mid-Nov last fall seemed to shock the group into excellence —but only for a month. For 13 games they had the fourth best NHL WIN%, 10th best SV% (.922, 5v5).

There is, again, a lot of change, with not much time to gel. I’m wishin’ & hopin’ there’s more patience in Oilerville this fall than there was last fall.

    I wait.

  46. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 THE NHL COACHING CHURN

Q is an outlier. NHL average is about three years, last time I looked. Oilers, 2+.
I don’t know how this rate of churn helps build organizational stability. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t.
I do think Q’s time in Chicago speaks to the value, from a Cup-winning perspective, of letting coach and team go through the inevitable ups and downs without threat of firing.
But that requires organizational (and, especially, owner) patience. And especially in hockey-mad/obsessive/fanatic markets.
I imagine the tenure of coach Mike Babcock will be short, here in Oilerville. Regardless of any Cup success. More churn.
I’m very curious to watch coach and wunderkind Martin St-Louis and the Habs over the next few years

  47. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 THE GHOST OF SAM POLLOCK LIVES IN OILERVILLE!

What a glorious Sunday morning read! Lowetide may say he hates Sam with the youthful hatred of one who saw a former Bruins’ property come to the Gardens to stone his beloved 1971 team. But the way he “marbles” him through his writings and ruminations – it makes this 70s Hab fan happy!

Today Sam Pollock is the spiritual father of GMGS Glen Sather.
Surely, Misha D, being born in Montreal under the sign of yet another ‘70s Cup, bodes well for the man. And by extension, the Oilers.

Hurrah for the ghost of Sam, somehow still pulling strings in the NHL!

  48. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 HOCKEY, MONEY, CUPS
Montreal. They are the other template. They have an emerging and large elite corps signed for win-friendly contracts for 5-8 years.
Let’s see how the two models (get rich v get Cup) play out over the next five years.
McD isn’t here in Oilerville for the money. As long as there’s a good chance to win the Cup, I believe he’s with Drai and Bouch. That chance to win gets better as so many other teams deal with the “get rich” model.

Montreal will win multiple Cups in the next decade. Oilers, a couple. The get rich players? Not so many.
