  5. @jimlil @olliethewobbly @hnom That’s one of the arguments for goalies 6.5+ height. One, they may be able to see over the players in front of them. Two, with their height and width they fill up most of the net.
I started watching hockey when only a handful wore masks, and padding was (relative to today’s gear) inconsequential.

  10. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 “I want this kid to f—ing try harder defensively, but he saves himself for offense,” the executive said

In hockey, as in life, people do not like it when others make effort look effortless.

Evan Bouchard is so smart he doesn’t waste effort. Occasional viewers are convinced he’s lazy or dumb, or both. The results don’t matter to them. A couple of awkward giveaways circulating on the internets confirms their opinion (it’s a cottage industry, clipping and sharing Bouchard’s gaffes; there’s no market for the Makar, Hughes, Werenski, Hutson gaffes, so we don’t see that all high-level puck-possession D are taking and losing risks, regularly.)

It’s in the job description of elite offensive D: take risks, be willing to fail to be excellent. They all do. The difference is that some are doing so without seeming effort. They are reviled as lazy. Go Bouch!

  19. It's been about two months since Steve Yzerman was removed as GM of the Red Wings. Since then all we've heard was from two reliable insiders is that neither Draper or Greenberg will be the next GM. I'm not panicking about lack of GM news, it's too early for that, but this isn't reassuring.

  24. Many goalies wonder the same thing about their thick-bodied defenders. A body is, they would say, a better screen than a window on WTF is going on in front of them. But thick-bodied defenders are too often thick-skulled defenders. And, goalies’ views on the matter are seldom welcome.

“This has, obviously, the potential to really stunt that growth,” he said. “It couldn’t be a worse time for tariffs to hit in terms of really having the having the possibility to increase costs.””

  47. 🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 I believe that one decision by McDavid, to eschew the 1-vs-3 habit in favour of the 200-ft game, will not only lead to a powerful season by the man, it will signal to the team that responsible play is expected, from top to bottom. He knows this. That’s how they got to back to back SCFs. That’s how they put together the only consistent month of play last season, from Nov 26-Dec 25. He’s stubborn (believes he can do it all, himself); he’s also smart, and driven. And, I would imagine, embarrassed for winning yet another Art Ross while his team floundered. I expect a very different season of play this year.

As for his wingers, I like the Podz plus Savoie/Kap suggestion. For Draisaitl, I want Howard for a long stretch. He will learn, and become the winger this team needs. On the other side, Dach? I have great faith in Drai’s talent as a mentor.
