Many goalies wonder the same thing about their thick-bodied defenders. A body is, they would say, a better screen than a window on WTF is going on in front of them. But thick-bodied defenders are too often thick-skulled defenders. And, goalies’ views on the matter are seldom welcome.

You’re welcome, though I was not in favour of the trade at the time.
Rumour now is that Skinner wanted out of Oilerville. The atmosphere for he and fam was very unhealthy. I was glad to see him appreciated by Penguins fans and media.
As for Jarry, he wasn’t impressed by the laissez-faire defensive play (f-group, not just d-group) in front of him, but was quickly put in his place. Goalies are not allowed to criticize leadership.
We’ll see whether a now-serious/responsible leadership group gives him (and all goalies) the support they need to succeed. -
@buffaloseven @caffeinatedgeek @mike @tedzanzibar D corps were not the problem for Skinner (or Ingram, Jarry, Pickard). F group not playing 200 feet, that was the problem. There were moments last year when that was not the case. Nov 25-Dec 26. In his last five games for Oilers, when F group played as they can, Skinner was .943SV% (5v5).
So yes, his ceiling is high. Plus, he doesn’t take it personally when his team bails on him. The guy has an amazing mental toughness. Super under-appreciated in Oilerville. Penguins fans and writers seemed to have liked him, from what I saw. Good luck in Winnipeg, Stu!🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 #letsgoOilers #Oilers #nhl #stanleycup #hockey #hnom #yeg #edmonton #goalies @hnom

@caffeinatedgeek @buffaloseven @mike @tedzanzibar As an Oilers fan who is also a Skinner fan it was beyond frustrating how the goalies got blamed for losing SCFs in 2024 and 2025, and a poor November 2025. Goalies were not “the problem.” But all five paid for it in 2025-26. Glad to see Skinner back in Canada. I wish him well with the Jets. If they make to the playoffs, the guy has an amazing clutch record (WIN% in Games 4,5,6,7 notwithstanding the 2024 Game 7 and 2025 Game 6, which losses were not on him).

Goalie stats, as round 2 is moving along. Carolina will face another good goalie, facing Buffalo or Montreal.

@jimlil It’s my only disappointment with GM Stan Bowman so far, that he placated Oilerville and it’s irrational demand to “solve the goalie problem.”
As for regretting the trade, I regretted it the moment it was made, Dec 12. How well will it age? That should come clear this spring as both Penguins and Oilers look to be heading for the playoffs, with “new” goalies in net. One goalie with an impressive playoff (and especially clutch game) WIN%, the other not so much.#goalies #penguins #Oilers #nhl #hockey #hnom #pittsburg #edmonton @hnom

Yes. Jets fans will know this trope all too well. I believe Stan Bowman was right when he said last year that a team like the Oilers doesn’t need “elite” goaltending to win the Cup. The flip side is that even elite goaltending is often not enough to win a Cup. Some have said recently that hockey should be called “Goale,” because the position is so important. I too think it’s important, but I don’t think it’s THAT important. This is team sport. Winning happens when the team plays to win (& has the benefit of the bounces etc —the luck— that may be the critical component of every team’s Stanley Cup success. @mike @jimlil

@jimlil As an Oilers fan I was not /am not happy that management caved to outside pressure on Skinner. Now I’m enjoying watching him thrive with the Pens (and not enjoying watching Oilers stumble —it’s getting better, but Skinner was never the problem). Meanwhile, Jarry, who may be a fine goalie, is hurt.

🏒🥅🇨🇦 Rangers 0 v Oilers 2 (ENG)
After Fs and D dominating Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks in their first two games, tonight it was goalie Stu Skinner who won the game.
It’s very early days, but Oilers goalie tandem looking good. Start of season sporting a .833 Winning %, with Skinner .942 SV% and Pickard .933 SV%#goalies #letsgoOilers #Oilers #nhl #hockey #hnom #yeg #edmonton @hnom

@alipunk Goaltending matters.
As do scoring, defending, and zone exit strategies.
But to return to your point: please define a “good one.” And: Is there a goalie you see that fits this description? Is there a goalie with a post-season winning percentage that’s better than the current Oilers tandem?
Once we have specifics the conversation gets more interesting.ps. I know you’re in good company with your “get a good goalie” comments. I also believe it’s not a useful argument (if you’re an Oilers fan; it’s an excellent trolling argument, and especially for fans of other Pacific Division teams, for fans of the Dallas Stars, and of the Floridians).
-
@alipunk pps. I looked further: the only other time in NHL history (besides Tim Thomas, Bruins, 2011) a goalie won a Vézina and a Cup in the same year was Billy Smith, Islanders, 1982. (Prior to that Vezina awarded to team of goalies w lowest GAA).
-
@alipunk Ps. In the NHL there are no “crappy” goaltenders. There, however, seasons and parts of seasons where even the elite goalies struggle. And seasons and parts of seasons where “average” goalies seem to become elite.
Blaming the goalie for a team’s success or failure is easy for fans; it’s not a viable strategy for a GM. Why? Because the goalie is only one position. An important position, no doubt. But as the record suggests, putting a lot of $M into that position leaves other areas weak. -
🏒🥅🇨🇦 Dear Stu Skinner haters, Remember last season when you were clamouring for a trade for John Gibson? As the writer says, last night wasn’t his night, allowing 5 goals on 13 shots.
I’m not here to dump on Gibson. I am here to say, stay the course on Skinner. Yes, he flubbed the puck-handling on the tying goal against last game. But otherwise he had a good game.
Goalies don’t thrive on hate. At least not from their own fans. Whether it’s Skinner or Gibson or some other magical imaginary goalie, they will all have their bad days and their good days.#goalies #letsgoOilers #Oilers #nhl #hockey #hnom #yeg #edmonton @hnom

🏒🥅🇨🇦 “Stuart Skinner has struggled too frequently in high-leverage spots over the last two seasons.”
Interesting, given what I was seeing during the 2025 playoffs: that Skinner’s historical record in games 4-7, at least to the end of the Dallas series (winning Western Conference two years running), was outstanding. Those are, by definition, the highest-leverage games in the NHL.
Is there a goaltender, aside from Bobrovsky, with better high-leverage record?
Certainly not the goalies writer Travis Yost loves here: Keumper, Hill, Oettinger (all vanquished by Skinner-Pickard), Stolarz, Hellebyuck.#letsgoOilers #Oilers #nhl #stanleycup #hockey #hnom #yeg #goalies #edmonton @hnom @hockey

🏒🥅 Will Sam Bennett (& similar style skaters) pay for similar “mistakes” against goalies in 2025 playoffs? When will Woll, Skinner et al take back the crease from skaters who habitually cause them to suffer head injuries?

@chad Recent interviews with new goalie coach Paul Aubrey have me looking forward to how he might help Skinner develop. As a relatively recent Oilers fan I wasn’t aware of the splash he, Skinner, made in his rookie year. Apparently few Oilers fans remember either (at least not the vocal ones).
I also like Stan Bowman’s approach to the whole goalie issue. -

🏒🥅🇨🇦🏆 What if we didn’t make a fetish of the goaltender?
No current Vezina nominees made it to the 2025 Conference Finals. Perhaps the most inconsistent (regular season) goalie must won the the Western Conference pennant. In 2024 he out-goalied Bob, but lost the Cup. In 2025?#goalies #letsgoOilers #Oilers #nhl #stanleycup #hockey #hnom #canada #edmonton @hnom @hockey

@ColleenB He’s in good company: none of the Vezina finalists looked good from the numbers. At least he made it into the second round. Neither K nor V managed that.

🏒🥅 STRUDWICK ON OILERS GOALTENDING
After Calvin Pickard’s game against the Hurricanes the Got Yer Back podcast’s Jason Strudwick had this to say. I found it far more interesting than anything I’ve read or heard recently about Oilers goaltending.ps. Strudwick’s analysis is always worth a listen. The guy was on the NHL ice. Has a calm perspective. Has a sense of humour.
