The book forces the reader, any reader, to confront terrible truths about the situation in Israel, a situation that had only intensified since its authorship.
The book demands of the reader and understanding a "Truth and Reconciliation" of all sides of the conflict. For Jews, a recognition of the ways in which Jewish life in Israel has come at the cost of so many in ways that are in deep conflict with the Jewish soul, and for Palestinians, the ways in which the continued lies about and erasure of Jewish history and existence fuels the exact intransigence and emotional tightening that has perpetuates the conflict.
From both sides the book demands emotional honesty and understanding...

I wanted to read one last book before the end of 5786 and that book is Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor, a book by a religious Jew, an American who immigrated to Israel in the 1980s and served as an IDF soldier during the first Intifada, who spent a significant amount of time with Palestinians and Palestinian thinkers, and who organizes for peace in Israel/Palestine.
The book has been sitting in my queue for years, having come out in 2018, five years before 10/7, but no less prescient now than it was then, the book comes as a series of letters written by the author to his neighbor, an open ended figure of a Palestinian who is willing to listen and to read.
The book is a difficult read for me. at times I found myself metaphorically screaming "Yes, this!" when he explains the perspective of Jewish history, Jewish identity, the Zionist movement and the connection of Jews to the land, but also...
