I am thinking of the South African election of 1994 that finally ended the apartheid system. I was working for the electoral commission as a scribe. During the election I was reassigned to the National Crisis Centre. This was a medium sized room in a Joburg skyscraper. Tables were shoved together down the middle of the room and down the middle of the tables were two rows of phones. There must have been maybe forty phones.
There were about three or four of us in the crisis centre. I nervously mentioned to one of the other workers that I had only heard about my assignment the previous day. I didn't have any training. "Training?" they echoed blankly. None of us had any training.
Of course we got in early before the polling stations opened. We sat there in silence waiting for the first call. The run up to the election had been violent. there had even been a siege of our building, including exchanges of gunfire and deaths while we were trapped in the building. Overall, thousands of people had died during that period.
We didn't know what kind of calls we were going to get. Would they be about missing stationery or bombs?
Finally one of the phones rang. It was like an electric shock had hit all of us. We looked up and down the line of phones for the one that was ringing.
I can still feel the cold horror as I realized the phones didn't have lights on. We had no idea which phone was ringing.
If you had checked in on the crisis centre, poking your head around the door to see how we were doing, you would have seen a couple of us sitting in immobile despair in our seats, and a couple of others crawling like spiders on the oversized table, grabbing handfuls of phones and desperately shouting "Hello? Hello?"

The Israeli Consul General, Dani Dayan, showed up at Harvard Law to lecture students on “the legal strategy of Israeli settlements.”
The students didn’t debate him. They stood up, held signs that said settlements are a war crime, and walked out.
Occupation doesn’t get a polite lecture hall. It gets an empty room.

i give USA #feminism, especially Friedan and Steinem, all the props for being the first to openly declare #zionism equal to #apartheid.
but their modus operandi was lay bare at that 1975 International Women’s Year conference: they were good at appropriating the revolutionary work of BIPOC and neutralizing it for hegemonic gain

I had a good day yesterday, watching 4 films :)
"The Last First: Winter K2" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt39150288/) - a rather heavy one to start with, about an expedition up the #mountain #K2 that goes badly wrong.
Next was "The Wind's Thirst" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt39172060/), about some indigenous Colombians at the mercy of #coal extraction and #WindFarm projects redirecting river water and subjecting them to violence.
"Hell's Army" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt39830102/) - was very interesting - about the origins of the #WagnerGroup and their involvement in various wars.
In the Q&A afterwards, they said that some former Wagner Group members are now security on #Russia's "Shadow Fleet" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_shadow_fleet).Last was "Notes From The Underground" (https://www.sheffdocfest.com/film/notes-underground) about the #HipHop music scene in #CapeTown and how it developed under #apartheid up to the present day.
In their Q&A they said they spent 34 days in 2017 filming, but lost all the footage in the burglary :( After mourning for a while, they then had to go back and shoot it all again.There were loads of other interesting-looking films I would like to watch, but I could only make the Sunday :(

Pols was fired from Tata after a single day, because he was the leader of the ASF in South-Africa during his student years.
The ASF was a far-right organization fighting for apartheid. Pols was literally trying to prevent Melson Mandela from speaking in public.
