A new report on Israel’s genocidal assault on the Gaza Strip has revealed that the Palestinian territory has “lost an astounding 71.5 percent of its total documented cultural heritage during this war.” It concluded that the Israeli “targeting was openly deliberate, culminating in the levelling of entire historic neighbourhoods, particularly in Gaza City.”
The 37-page report titled Cultural Genocide: Devastation of Cultural Heritage in Gaza by Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights was published on August 31. It examined 316 sites of historical significance in the Gaza Strip. Of these, “226 sites were either damaged or entirely destroyed, leaving less than one third intact. It's a tough time to be a friend of Israel.
Some of my Followers--especially more recent ones--may find it astounding to see me characterize myself that way. I regularly post & repost scathing indictiments of #IsraelAtWarCrimes & its ongoing #genocide in Palestine (with accompanying #EthnicCleansing in other neighboring nations) under the guise of retaliation for Palestinians' most effective armed resistance (an inalienable right, under international law) to Israel's illegal occupation since the wars of half a century ago, which happened to include--but not center on--extensive terrorism & war crimes of their own.
But a reminder of who I am: for 3 decades, I served as a U.S. military intelligence leader. I have international friends & classmates who went on TO LEAD the IDF, Shin Bet & Mossad, back when those organizations SHOWED ME that the Law of Armed Conflict meant as much to them as it did to us. And as a Muslim, I too read a scripture that says (e.g., Qur'an 5:21, 7:137, 17:104) that God gave the land of Israel to the People of Moses--albeit with a warning that SPREADING CORRUPTION in that land would repeatedly be met with suffering at the hands of adversaries (e.g., 17:4-8).
More materially to a discussion of #geopolitics, the same "international law" that provides for Palestinians' right to armed resistance to occupation ALSO underwrites ISRAEL'S right to exist, in peace, AS A JEWISH STATE. Not because of some "deed from God" that the vast majority of the world's people don't recognize. Not because Jews have any superior claim. Not because Jews were there thousands of years ago; simply because it DOES exist as a Jewish state & the UN Charter that LITERALLY EVERY NATION IN THE WORLD *has* signed onto (1) grants every country's people the right to self-determination, and (2) forbids using armed force TO ALTER such things anymore.
So I want VERY MUCH for the children of Israel to FINALLY be able to grow up free from the shadow of war--just as I wish that for the children of Palestine; of Lebanon; of Syria; of Jordan. And I pray most every day that Allah guide the People of Moses back to His straight path.
But here's the thing: none of that relieves Israel or its leaders or its soldiers from accountability for the #CrimesAgainstHumanity that have filled our feeds every day for the past three years. And that accountability, at this point, NEEDS TO BE SEVERE; wanting that doesn't negate the friendship; it just means I love JUSTICE too--as one might wish for a grade school friend who, in high school, was starting to beat smaller kids up for their lunch money to pick on the wrong "little kid" and get his nose bloodied so he doesn't grow into an irredeemable bully.
And here's the part that really worries me: polls from major research organizations TO HAARETZ consistently show A SOLID MAJORITY OF JEWISH ISRAELIS SUPPORTING what their country is doing (unlike, say, Americans & Trump's war on Iran).
It's a tough time to be a friend of Israel.
