  2. Our townhall events come as the use of AI tools in UK policing escalates dramatically.

The coalition calls for an end to so-called “predictive” policing with legislation that protects our rights.

There must be safeguards against the harms of AI and tech uses in policing and immigration settings.

We fight for a society where surveillance and digital policing isn't heralded as the answer to social and economic problems.

  3. Coming up, the #SafetyNotSurveillance coalition is holding townhall events across the country.

Join us to explore how AI and ‘crime-predicting’ tech is being used by local police forces. And what can be done about it.

In our excerpt from THE BLACK SHIELD, Wilbert L. Cooper recounts how his mother Gayle joined the police force: longreads.com/2026/08/25/the-b

  5. CW: CW: police violence, state violence

The astounding naïveté with which so many people, especially in Western countries, regard the police as the good guys is honestly quite something.

There seems to be this deeply ingrained fairy tale that the police are fundamentally benevolent people in nice uniforms who exist to protect us, and that whenever they hurt, intimidate, detain, or even kill someone, there must automatically have been a Very Good Reason™.

No. They are an institution with a monopoly on legitimate state violence.

Sometimes they abuse that power. Sometimes they enforce profoundly unjust laws. Sometimes they protect the existing order rather than the people who are suffering under it (because that is what the police is actually for!)

And the uniform does not magically turn coercive power into moral virtue.
If your understanding of police begins and ends with “they're the good guys,” perhaps you should read a little history.

  6. An investigation finds at least 27 cases since 2018 in which AI license-plate camera errors led innocent motorists to repeated stops, gunpoint detentions or jail—including a couple whose six-week-old baby was left alone in the car. 🚨📹 ij.org/dozens-of-innocent-moto #ALPR #Surveillance #Policing

  7. This was considered a progressive, modern take on police work. The things that feel dated aren’t all that wrong. It’s the way it was. This was also a real propaganda piece for the idea that the police were the good guys and it wasn’t racially motivated. They really hoodwinked us.

  8. Andrew Guthrie Ferguson, a professor at the George Washington University Law School whose scholarship has focused on #policing, #BigData #surveillance & the #FourthAmendment, said Thursday’s shifts were “better than the opposite” but called for further scrutiny of the #technology in the form of “sustained democratic engagement with the rules & judicial checks on access at a minimum.”

  9. Laura Laker has the next in our series exploring the cultural issues affecting the #ebike space.

Taking a separate angle to our exploration of the gig economy worker's point of view, Laura did the shadowed Stu Ford and his 10-person team of Cycle Cops.

Laura sought to understand the methods the Cycle Cops are using to spot illegal modifications & overpowered vehicles that are purporting to be e-bikes.

  10. Beyond the headlines figures, there's little transparency over the extent of surveillance that those referred into Prevent will face.

Being neither wholly owned by policing or by counter-terrorism, there appears to be no oversight or parliamentary scrutiny of data sharing, processing and storage.

  11. Prevent is expanding the surveillance state at an unruly rate.

Public sector workers shouldn't be co-opted as agents of counter-terror policing. People in need of support shouldn't be stigmatised as suspect.

We need real investment in education, community health services and local infrastructure.

  12. Prevent is meant to identify people at risk of radicalisation before any crime has been committed.

But over 50% of referrals fall under 'no fixed ideology'.

And governments have added more categories into the mix, bloating the system with referrals that don't belong under a counter-terrorism lens.

  13. Prevent referrals have shot up by ~40% in England and Wales 📈

Kids, teens and vulnerable people are being pushed into a mass surveillance programme where 80% of referrals don't go anywhere. But their data remains in the system.

It’s clear that a programme designed for counter-terrorism has lost the plot.

  14. Under 18s make up the majority of referrals into Prevent.

Over a third are people with mental health conditions and people who are neurodivergent.

Often referrals are made to fast track people to get support. Long-term surveillance is the trade off.

    Prevent is the wrong answer.

Drone as a First Responder - DFR! DFR programs are exploding across the USA.

As of Feb 2026, over 1,000 public safety agencies—police, fire, emergency management agencies, have received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) waivers needed to automate drone operations and launch a DFR program.

Concerns re invasion of privacy and the safety of "automated" flight operations are being flagged already.

  16. "In 2023, 60 per cent of Australians rejected a constitutionally recognised Voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. A body that could only make representations, only on matters concerning the people whose ancestors have been here sixty thousand years.
"Too much, the No campaign shrieked. Division. Privilege. Special treatment.
"Nine months later, Anthony Albanese handed Jillian Segal what the Voice never dreamed of asking for. Not a right to be heard. Power. No election. No parliamentary vote. No hearing. A three year commission reporting personally to the Prime Minister, with a mandate reaching into every campus, newsroom, classroom, gallery, charity, arts contract and visa file in the Commonwealth."

  19. The Prevent Duty has transformed trusted public sector workers into agents of counter-terror policing.

And those in need of support into subjects of suspicion.

Community safety demands real investment in education, community services and local infrastructure to support often young and vulnerable people – not to stigmatise and surveil them.

  20. Prevent referrals rocketed by almost 40% last year in England and Wales 🚨

Of those referred into this counter-terrorism programme, the majority were under 18. Almost 400 were children under 10!

More than a third have a mental health condition or are neurodiverse.

This is a huge expansion of the surveillance state.
