  1. Here is a generic-language version of the email I just sent to #Somerville Council about police #bodycameras for the 12pm deadline.

If you are delivering public comment tonight, feel free to adapt ideas in there. It's a complicated issue, and I know that concerns differ.

  3. On Friday, the Mayor also released this self-congratulatory video about the body camera policy that he's hoping will be passed on Monday: instagram.com/reel/DbJLZDzRjl3
    (apologies for the Instagram link)

It's important to note that despite the fact that Mayor Wilson mentions #oversight in the same breath as body cameras, no civilian oversight body exists in #Somerville at this time, and creating one will likely take years.

  5. From the perspective of those of us trying to provide current information on this issue to the public, it's incredibly frustrating that *after* the Mayor scheduled this Special Meeting (on very short notice), he then proceeded to update the policy that is being discussed at the special meeting, just two business days before the public is supposed to provide comment (and the Council is supposed to vote).

  7. Update: On July 23rd, the Mayor introduced a new version of the STIR and TSSUP for police #bodycameras in #Somerville. The new documents clarify a number of policy points, but don't substantively address the concerns we've highlighted in our toolkit above.

  9. «Not Your Rescue Project: Migrant sex workers fighting for justice»

👤 Chanelle Gallant 👤 Elene Lam
    🗓 2024-11-12
    📔 Haymarket Books 🛒 haymarketbooks.org/books/2258-
    🌐 Website: notyourrescueprojectbook.com

    > A landmark abolitionist primer on migration, sex work, policing, and the “anti-trafficking industry”—and a powerful argument about who is really leading the way toward justice: migrant sex workers themselves.

    > In this impassioned corrective to decades of misguided, carceral approaches to migration and sex work, long-time organizers Chanelle Gallant and Elene Lam deftly expose the harms of criminalization in the name of “anti-trafficking” and lift up migrant sex workers’ organizing in the US, Canada, and elsewhere. In doing so, they make the compelling case that the only effective response to the needs of migrant sex workers must be led by migrants in the sex trade, as they fight for rights, safety, and autonomy.

    > Gallant and Lam illustrate how this movement is taking aim at the root causes of violence and abuse: the white supremacist securitization of borders, the criminalization of both migration and sex work, the patriarchial devaluation of women’s labor, and forced displacement due to climate disaster, war, and poverty—all fueled by racial capitalism.

    > An indispensable exploration of the relationship between migration and sex work—and the underlying societal conditions they reflect—Not Your Rescue Project is a thorough indictment of the anti-trafficking industry as an engine of criminalization and state violence, and an instructive account of the emancipatory politics already being practiced by migrant sex workers in their organizing. Throughout, Gallant and Lam place migrant sex workers at the center of struggles against border imperialism, carceral states, and capitalism—dispelling a range of poisonous myths and paving the way for deeper alliances across movements with the shared goal of dismantling and abolishing carceralism in all its forms.

  11. Here is the latest update from the Somerville ad hoc group working on the body cameras issue: docs.google.com/document/d/e/2

The very short version is that the Mayor is still trying to rush this specific body cameras policy through without proper deliberation and that #Somerville is holding a special meeting on July 27th for public comment *and* a vote.

This is *not* the public comment session that was requested by petition.

Americans recognize that they are being tracked constantly—by corporations, advertisers, platforms, apps, smart devices, cameras, vehicles, and often one another—yet most people still do not fully understand how that data ecosystem functions, who can access it, or how easily it can be weaponized."

  19. Bringing the Polis into disrepute

    thenational.scot/news/26290837

A Scottish pro-Palestine activist is facing charges for “threatening and abusive behaviour” after reading a poem about children killed by Israel. Ironically one written by Michael Rosen. I wonder whether they will be a seeking a warrant for his arrest as well.

I really thought we were being a little more sensible in Scotland.

  21. Lecturer:
Why are people doing this course?

    Me:
I'm a police and prison abolitionist, I believe that the system we have now not only doesn't work, but it creates immense amounts of harm.

    Next person:
I'm very similar to Aby. I worked in Corrective Services and am now working in disability services. I want to meld these two types of work and work with disabled prisoners.

umm.. THESE THINGS ARE NOT SIMILAR

"People’s faces being scanned without consent and being added to lists is worrying enough, but the speed which Facewatch technology now makes it possible for someone to encounter the police force in the middle of their daily shop is a really dangerous escalation."

Can this become a catalyst for police education, who routinely mislabel e-motorbikes & electric bikes?

In addition to reviewing the reasons for their long advocacy to #StopShotSpotter, they also highlight the ways in which TBR's leadership role in the effort has been erased, sidelining the central black and brown voices in the effort.
