  1. Acela Nextgen was a smooth ride overall. The two short 160 mph sprints before and after Providence, RI were a nice experience. Connecticut is pretty but horribly slow.

  3. Quite something when I'm telling people that we got "only" 15 inches of snow here on the upper edge of the #blizzard. (Still snowing though.)

But holy crap, I just heard that #ProvidenceRI got 38 inches.

Take care, my friends to the south.

  4. Our street hasn't been plowed yet, but at least our driveway and sidewalk are clear.

It's our first blizzard and so far it's just a lot of work.

  9. DEER TICK
    Emotional Contracts
    2023 U.S. pressing
    Red vinyl

A great band (and friends of mine) from Providence, Rhode Island.

Because I lived smack dab in the middle of #ProvidenceRI and Boston, I had access to the best of both music scenes growing up there.

I could go one way, and see bands like Buffalo Tom and Morphine, or the other way, to catch bands like Six Finger Satellite, Velvet Crush and later, Deer Tick.

Here, little has changed about Deer Tick, and thank god for that.
They’ve always been a tight, killer band, and John McCauley’s voice, although maybe a little older and wiser, is still twangy, soulful, scorched earth.

Great album opener in “If I Tried To Leave”, a retro, countrified blast of rock n roll.

    Long live Deer Tick.

  11. I can’t say enough how cool and life changing the bike lane on Kinsley ave from the mall to olneyville is. I hope more people start using it, pedestrian and cyclists alike. It’s gorgeous and I barely have to deal with cars for something that used to be treacherous.

  13. #Microforest’ takes root amid city streets of #ProvidenceRI, reflecting worldwide trend

“As more and more people see it, they’ll be inspired,” said Jeff Matteis of the Pearl Street Garden Collective. “It’s just like one little point, but it just radiates benefits out.”

By Edward Fitzpatrick, September 27, 2025

PROVIDENCE — "The asphalt grid of South Providence is lined with multifamily homes and concrete sidewalks. But along Pearl Street, one lot stands out.

"It’s lush and green, with nearly 270 trees packed into a 1,000-square-foot lot. Officially called the Pearl Street Garden, it contains a tiny forest in the middle of the urban jungle.

" 'Microforests' like this one are cropping up in places ranging from #ElizabethNJ to #CambridgeMA, to #Pakistan. South Providence has two, both along Pearl Street, created by #GroundworkRhodeIsland and the #PearlStreetGardenCollective. The goal is to combat climate change and bring cooling shade to urban areas that lack the leafy boulevards of wealthier neighborhoods.

" 'This isn’t habitat restoration on the scale that is needed in terms of the world,' said Jacq Hall, director of special projects at Groundwork Rhode Island, an environmental group that works to create healthier, more resilient urban communities in Rhode Island. 'But it is a really great way, especially in a city, for people to become very in close touch with biodiversity and why it’s important and why it’s also beautiful.'

"In May, more than 100 people came out to plant the microforest.

" 'There’s microforest momentum happening around the world right now,' said Jeff Matteis, cofounder of the Pearl Street Garden Collective, a group of artists, gardeners, and educators championing #ecological land #stewardship. 'I think as more and more people see it, they’ll be inspired.' "

I also run issuepedia.org and htyp.org but nobody knows why.

    Details

    My legal name is:
    Woozalia Nicola Jadzia Rayner Staddon
(...but you can call me Woozle, which is short for Woozalia and is also what my parents called me from the time I was about a week old.)

I met @Harena online in February 2001, and we've been hypertwins ever since.

We both live in #DurhamNC, where we grew up 3 blocks apart (but, again, we first met online) in the 1970s (give or take).

I was born in Toronto, grew up in Durham (1967-'85), spent a summer in Ann Arbor MI (1985), lived in #ProvidenceRI working at #BrownU Psychology Dept. (1985-1989), moved back to Durham and worked at #DukeU (Humanities Computing Facility, 1990-'91) writing neural network software, lived in #AthensGA (1991-2001), then finally again moved back to Durham.

    Things I sometimes do:

    • post original music
    • write about #JennyHypertwin
    • escalate the War on Bullshit
    • write lots of unfinished software
    • administer TootCat
    • complain about tech (mainly software)
    • feel inadequate
    • take photos of clouds

(If the above doesn't show as a bulleted list for you -- please complain to your instance admin. ^.^)

I was on #GPlus when the walls fell.

I was on Facebook in the early 200?s, several years before everyone else discovered it (a Dutch friend from IRC dragged me there).

Defenestrated* since 2005; prefer Ubuntu MATE.

I started an online store at about the same time Jeff Bezos did. He had family willing to invest in it, though.

I never understood the appeal of marriage, but I tried it for ten years anyway. Not my cuppa cola.

(I don't drink coffee; I don't like it. Cola is my one vice.)

My ideas are my children. (Wait, I guess I'd better explain that... I helped Harena raise her 3 youngers, and I have a biological daughter from the aforementioned marriage who is awesome and doing well for herself in Atlanta -- but I very much never wanted kids, and neither did H. It was always other people who did.)
