  1. I’m so sorry - I’m a bit behind on my Mastodon posting. Last week was crazy busy. So let me give you a recap of all the trouble I’ve been making in the Senate. First up - my exchange with Justice Minister Sean Fraser about Premier Danielle Smith’s threat to stop funding new superior court judges in Alberta. youtu.be/4qW6MudvW7M?si=mM_Sk- #cdnpoli #abpoli #LCJC #Alberta #SenateOfCanada #DanielleSmith #SenCa #ableg

  2. Some Canadians are counting down the days till Christmas. Some are counting the nights till Hanukkah. But in the Senate, we're counting down the sitting days until we receive Bill C-4, which will, among many other things, exempt federal political parties from provincial privacy law. At QP today, I had questions. I think anyone who cares about privacy rights will want to listen. youtu.be/ZB501otrMwQ?si=jbJj62 #BillC4 #C4 #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #LCJC #privacy #BillC2 #BillC8 #BillC12 #privacy

  3. What can we do to protect health care providers and first responders from assault on the job? Bill S-233 tries to address the problem with tougher sentences after conviction. But that won't help one bit, if people aren't charged and prosecuted. And that won't happen if we don't end the culture of silence and stoicism, that prevents charges from being laid. Here's my own take on Bill S-233 - well-meaning legislation that will, I fear, accomplish very little to solve an urgent problem in our health care system. youtu.be/XgD_admKvNs?si=vqM-ez #SenateofCanada #cdnpoli #HealthCare #LCJC #Canada

  4. I’m currently a member of the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs - and we are studying Bill S-230, which deals with structured intervention units, or SIUs, which have replaced the old solitary confinement/segregation cells. I was surprised to see that at the Max, at least, the SIU cells were actually bigger and brighter than the small standard cells. #S230 #BillS230 #LCJC #SenateofCanada #Edmonton #yeg

  5. @taco Well, that is the question. Are these new reverse onus rules constitutional? I’m not usually a members of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee, but I’ve been filling in recently. I hope to be able to ask just those questions of witnesses who are experts in constitutional and criminal law. #LCJC sencanada.ca/en/committees/lcj #SenateofCanada #C48 #BillC48

  6. CW: Link to Senate speech that references sexual assault, child murder

A link to my speech this afternoon on why Bill S-12 represented a serious threat to press freedom and free speech in Canada....and how senators, working together in committee, nipped out the words that seemed so innocuous but were so dangerous. youtu.be/ZBXkbpJBIYI #Canada #cdnpoli #S12 #BillS12 #myvoicemychoice #Edmonton #Edson #Alberta #CBC #CanadianBroadcastingCorporation #yeg #pressfreedom #SenateofCanada #SenCa #LCJC

  7. I have drafted an amendment to address this flaw in Bill S-12. I hope to present it at Committee on Monday night. The government is proposing an amendment of its own - but one, I feel, which could have unintended consequences of its own and criminalize private correspondence and communication. I hope we can find a workable compromise. #SenateofCanada #BillS12 #S12 #lcjc #publicationbans #rapeshield #Canada

  8. On Monday, the Senate Legal Committee will proceed to clause by clause debate on Bill S-12. One of the bill’s stated intents is to give sexual assault victims more power to challenge publication bans on their own identity. BUT the wording of the act may impose tough new limits on journalists & libraries. I raised this attack on press freedom at committee last week: youtu.be/SIMtk6paU44 #BillS12 #S12 #SenateofCanada #rapeshield #publicationbans #Canada #lcjc #yeg #CBC #Edmonton

  9. Good morning from #ottawa Last night in the Senate Chamber I spoke to #BillC5, which deals with mandatory minimum sentences - a speech inspired, inspired, in part, by the story of a woman I met while I was touring federal women’s prison in #Edmonton.
