Delighted to share episode 3 of the Kreisel Lecture series - a powerful conversation with Canadian authors Richard Van Camp, Shani Mootoo and Lise Gaboury-Diallo. https://open.spotify.com/episode/0BU0ksBRTRYDIlHraUUNlE?si=R4jId20zT4eXpJmVdmzSFQ&utm_source=copy-link #AlbertaUnbound #ualberta #yeg #Alberta #canlit #Canada

A very special episode of Alberta Unbound for you! This year marked the 20th anniversary of the University of Alberta’s Kreisel Lecture, named for the great Edmonton author and academic, Henry Kreisel. Normally, CBC Radio’s flagship doc program IDEAS broadcasts the annual literary lecture. But this year, IDEAS opted not to do so - which means WE have the honouring of sharing the podcast with you. .
This year’s special anniversary lecture featured three remarkable authors - Richard Van Camp, Shani Mootoo and Lise Gaboury-Diallo. Today, we’ve dropped the first episode, featuring a lovely talk by Richard, an Edmonton-based Dene novelist and essayist. But the whole thing kicks off with my own appreciation of Henry Kreisel, a mentor whom I adored. A very special pre-Canada Day treat for you all. #AlbertaUnbound #yeg #Edmonton #ualberta #canlit

Singer-songwriter Corb Lund has until June 10 to gather enough signatures to force a referendum to ban coal mining on the eastern slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. It’s a daunting task. But as the campaign comes to a climax, it seemed an apt moment to repost my Alberta Unbound interview with Corb about coal, cows, and country music. #AlbertaUnbound #ableg #abpoli

A brand new - and urgent - episode of Alberta Unbound. My conversation with Edmonton author and security analyst Patrick Lennox about foreign influence campaigns in Alberta’s referendum debate - and the threat they pose to national security. #ableg #abpoli #cdnpoli #Alberta #Canada #ForeignInterference #AlbertaUnbound #SenateofCanada

A new and timely Alberta Unbound - playwright and author @martychan on Alberta’s noxious Bill 28, book bans and the racism renaissance. This is - I guarantee - a delightful listen, because Marty is a delightful story-teller. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/alberta-unbound/id1511810939?i=1000761098829 #AlbertaUnbound #ableg #abpoli #bookbans #cdnpoli

No. No. Nine times no. Five very smart Albertans, from across the province, and across the political spectrum, tell me why they think Danielle Smith’s nine referendum questions are racist, or useless, or both. And we ask - why is there no No campaign as yet?? Please do give this vital episode a listen! https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/alberta-unbound/id1511810939?i=1000756773602 #ableg #abpoli #Alberta #AlbertaUnbound #yeg #yyc #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #DanielleSmith #NaheedNenshi

Earlier this month, I hosted a live panel at the University of Alberta’s International Week, with Anne McLellan, former deputy PM, Rickey Yada, the Dean of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and Dr. Charlie Mballa, a poli Sci prof at Campus Saint-Jean. I’m very proud of the resulting podcast, about how Canada, and Alberta, step up to this global moment. https://open.spotify.com/episode/3Ycn1fRLsEnVhh0r5QTiuH?si=dBwUDTdATta483OGitQouA #AlbertaUnbound #cdnpoli #ualberta #Edmonton #yeg #Alberta #Canada #abpoli #separatism #sovereignty #Trump #francophonie #trade

Dr. David Wishart is one of Canada’s most acclaimed scientists, a pioneer in the field of metabolomics. Debby Waldman is an award-winning children’s author. When a Métis trapper’s son met a New York rabbi’s daughter? Let’s just say there was chemistry. Meet this delightful couple in this latest Alberta Unbound. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/alberta-unbound/id1511810939?i=1000740687005 #AlbertaUnbound #ualberta #yeg #Edmonton #Alberta #abpoli #cdnpoli #metabolomics #NSERC #TMIC

ICYMI - I commend unto you my most excellent podcast interview with break-out stand-up star Faris Hytiaa, the pride of Lethbridge, speaking about his Sudanese roots, Alberta identity, and the future of Canadian comedy. At a moment of both crisis in Sudan, and rising anti-immigrant rhetoric in Canada, this is a very timely listen. (Also includes comedy excerpts, if you need a good laugh today.) #Alberta #AlbertaUnbound #abpoli #Canada #Sudan #yyc

A new episode of Alberta Unbound! And it's a great one - my conversation with Calgary-based Sudanese-Canadian stand up Faris Hytiaa. I recently discovered his comedy - and it is so fresh and funny and unexpected, as is his whole life story. We did this interview a bit differently, and interwove some of his material with our questions. If you're not already a fan - well, you have a great comedian to discover. But our conversation covered everything from the politics of Sudan, to the politics of Alberta, to the meaning of community and identity. This really is a very special episode. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/home-and-laughing-with-faris-hytiaa/id1511810939?i=1000736616034 #Calgary #Alberta #yyc #Sudan #abpoli #AlbertaUnbound #SenateofCanada #Lethbridge #ULethbridge #CBC

ICYMI - my Alberta Unbound season premiere! I talk to former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk about his Forever Canadian petition campaign? A mad idea that plays into separatist hands? Or smart political gamesmanship that calls the premier’s bluff? So delighted to introduce the “very special” 5th anniversary episode of Alberta Unbound - in which three smart savvy political insiders - Anne McLellan, Shannon Phillips and Ken Boessenkool dissect the meaning of the federal election, what it means for Alberta, Carney’s cabinet, the seeming rise in separatist sentiment, and what it means for Pierre Poilievre to run in a byelection in rural Alberta. #AlbertaUnbound #ableg #cdnpoli #abpoli #MarkCarney

A few Alberta Unbound fun facts. We’ve had guests from north, south, east and west. We’ve had almost (but not quite) gender parity. And our top 5 episodes are eclectic - ranging from a panel discussion on the risks of an Alberta pension plan and a one of one musical interview with Corb Lund. #AlbertaUnbound

Five years ago this month, I launched Alberta Unbound, a podcast to interrogate Alberta identity and explore the diversity of Alberta perspectives. My guests have been poets and politicians, academics and agriculturalists, jurists and journalists, singers and scientists and social activists. After 55 episodes and 50K downloads, we’re celebrating! #AlbertaUnbound #cdnpoli #ableg #abpoli

Second - a reminder of how far we still have to go as a country, to live up to our ideals. A wrenching conversation with a Cree chief from Alberta’s most isolated community about the devastation of wildfire - and of bureaucratic apathy in the face of disaster. Please listen to Chief Conroy Sewepagaham’s powerful voice. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/alberta-unbound/id1511810939 #AlbertaUnbound #wildfires #cdnpoli

An essential episode of Alberta Unbound. Chief Conroy Sewepagaham of the Little Red River Cree Nation talks about the wildfires that devestated his community, and the lack of help they’ve received to rebuild. Hot off the presses - my new episode of Alberta Unbound - a debrief with Bloomberg’s White House correspondent Josh Wingrove on all the tariff and trade war madness of the last week, and what we might expect this week…with a particular #Alberta twist. Josh tells us what it’s like being in the White House press room with Trump - and why even business leaders and Republicans who oppose tariffs are so eerily silent. #tariffs #tradewar #Trump #cdnpoli #AlbertaUnbound #yeg https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/alberta-unbound/id1511810939?i=1000698595947

I've just finished an oped for The Hill Times on avian influenza and biosecurity. And this morning, I recorded a new episode of Alberta Unbound: my very special guest was Josh Wingrove, White House correspondent for Bloomberg, an Edmonton boy, born and raised, now in the eye of the storm of the Trump tariff trade war. Josh was fascinating - and just a bit exhausted. Stay tuned - I'll post the link as soon as it's available tomorrow. #AlbertaUnbound #tariffs #H5N1 #AvianInfluenza #cdnpoli

Orwell said, “Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present, controls the past.” As the Trump regime seeks to erase Black history, trans history, women’s history - and our border - here’s my #AlbertaUnbound with author & activist Jesse Lipscombe. We discuss his family’s Black history in Alberta, Trump’s attacks on DEI, and how to find the courage - and build the coalitions - to resist. #BlackHistoryMonth #DEI #Morehouse #AmberValley #Alberta #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #yeg
