  1. Government Shuts Down Debate on Political Party Surveillance Bill

Nothing restores confidence in a surveillance bill quite like the government telling everyone to shut up about it.

  3. action.openmedia.org/page/1878 "Protect Canadian democracy: Sunset Bill C-4!
Every day, ordinary Canadians navigate a digital world where our personal habits are constantly tracked and used to surveil and manipulate us. We rely on privacy laws for protection. Yet, federal political parties are using Bill C-4 to exempt themselves from the laws everyone else follows, bound by no rules other than their own self-written privacy policies. In the age of AI, that is a massive threat to the health of our democracy.1

The Senate has offered the House a compromise: a three-year sunset clause for C-4, during which they could create real, enforceable privacy rules for political parties.2 But with less than a week until the House decides, rumours suggest MPs will reject the deal."

  8. 🇨🇦 Canada's political parties are using Bill C-4 to permanently exempt themselves from basic privacy law. We have days to force the House to accept the Senate’s sunset clause compromise.

📢 Tell your MP to respect voter privacy, sunset Bill C-4! openmedia.org/C4Sunset-mtd

  9. UPDATE: 🇨🇦's house just REFUSED to accept a Senate amendment that would put a sunset clause on PERMANENT immunity to privacy law for federal political parties!

LPC, CPC, and NDP did not have the courage to defend their choice; only Elizabeth May spoke to the obvious issues in #BillC4.

This isn't the end of the line; we're working on a HUGE nation-wide campaign demanding real voter privacy law!

  10. Some Canadians are counting down the days till Christmas. Some are counting the nights till Hanukkah. But in the Senate, we're counting down the sitting days until we receive Bill C-4, which will, among many other things, exempt federal political parties from provincial privacy law. At QP today, I had questions. I think anyone who cares about privacy rights will want to listen. youtu.be/ZB501otrMwQ?si=jbJj62 #BillC4 #C4 #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #LCJC #privacy #BillC2 #BillC8 #BillC12 #privacy

  12. 🇨🇦 Allowing parties to define their own rules and decide who enforces them leaves far too much open to interpretation and even potential abuse. And under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canadians should be free to form political thoughts and opinions without interference from those who wield political power.

If we are not able to do so as voting citizens, can we genuinely say that our elections are free and fair? What, then, does this mean for democracy in Canada?

  14. Bill C-4 Exempts Political Parties From Privacy Laws

Apparently, privacy laws are for other people, and not political parties. This according to Bill C-4.

Earlier, I wrote about Bill C-2 resurrecting lawful access, Canada's multi-decade long warrantless wiretapping law that would allow police to demand subscriber i
