  1. This story from @thetyee broke while our Standing Senate Committee on Transport And Communications was meeting to conduct hearings on generative AI. I was able to sneak in a related question at the tail end of the meeting. youtu.be/0HAgoeteUcI?si=0SfsXU #ableg #cdnpoli #TRCM #Canada #ForeignInterference #YouTube #AI #separatism

  3. And here is my more recent exchange with CBC executives, wherein I called on them to set up a Mastodon instance! youtu.be/lJUeQZlvD-E?si=S7QniO #CBC #TRCM #Mastodon

  4. Today, senior executives from CBC/RadioCanada came to testify before the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications. I had the chance to ask a lot of questions. But I made sure to ask why the CBC is still committed to X - and why they haven't investigated Mastodon (and Bluesky). Here's my exchange with CEO Marie-Philippe Bouchard and Editor in Chief @brodiefenlon. #CBC #Mastodon #X #Bluesky #SRC #Canada #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #TRCM #CanadianBroadcastingCorporation #SocialMedia youtu.be/lJUeQZlvD-E?si=msTknV

  5. On a similar note - on Friday, I toured the Vancouver harbour, with staff from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. These photos show the terminus of the TMX pipeline - where Alberta oil is loaded onto ships headed to Asia. Another reminder of how our provincial economies are deeply interconnected - and why Alberta is dependent on other Canadian provinces to succeed. #Vancouver #TMX #Alberta #ableg #cdnpoli #TRCM

  6. Happy to see another excellent news story about our recent Senate study of the the impact of climate change on transportation infrastructure. This story from the Nunatsiaq News looks specifically at the challenges faced by Nunavut. nunatsiaq.com/stories/article/ #Nunavut #SenateofCanada #TRCM #cdnpoli #permafrost #NunatsiaqNews #climatechange

  7. A great story from Cabin Radio on our new Senate study examining the impact of climate change on critical infrastructure. This story focuses on the challenges facing the North. 8. And while I'm being grumpy about air travel? Here's my question from the Transport and Communications Committee hearing last week, with the Montreal and Toronto airport authorities, asking why there are no contingency plans to evacuate people who are, because of weather conditions, trapped in planes on the tarmac for hours and hours, without water or food or working bathrooms. youtu.be/mxvtIwy8FEs?si=SHHRzr #SenateofCanada #yul #yyz #TRCM #AirTravel #ClimateChange

  9. This week, Air Canada cancelled many of its Calgary flights. (Edmonton & Ottawa lost AC and WestJet flights.) One excuse the airlines used was a pilot shortage. Is the pilot shortage real? What is driving it? Here, hot off the digital presses, is my new column for Alberta Views on the skilled labour shortages bedeviling our entire transportation sector. albertaviews.ca/not-enough-pil #AirCanada #WestJet #CN #CPKC #Porter #pilots #TransportCanada #TRCM #SenateofCanada #Canada #Calgary #yyc #yeg #yow

  11. TIL - the CN rail control centre in Edmonton control the trains and rails of CN’s entire network, right across the country. 16. I spent a fun & fascinating morning at CN’s Walker Yard, in Edmonton’s Calder neighbourhood, the busiest rail yard in Canada. At harvest time, they routinely handle 6000-7000 cars a day. Their engine shop can service up to 27 locomotives. #TRCM #CN #Edmonton #yeg #Calder #trains #rail #SenateofCanada

  17. (And apologies for the abrupt shift from soil health posts to posts about communications policy. But I am both deputy chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, and a member of the Standing Senate Committee on Transportation and Communications. So I care about soils. And transportation policy. And communications laws. It makes for an eclectic Mastodon feed, interspersed with pictures of my dog.) #AGFO #TRCM #SenateofCanada #cdnpoli #sorryabouthat

  23. I was a reporter for 30 years, before I became a Senator. So I know governments of all varieties dump information they don't want to draw attention to on the Friday before a long weekend. That's when Canadian Heritage dropped proposed regulations for C-18, which require Google & Meta to share 4% of Canadian earning with Canadian media. 29. @Bwacton @LALegault @thetyee I am a member of the Standing Senate Committee on Transportation and Communications, and I spent 30 years as a journalist. I opposed this bill, and warned, repeatedly, that this might happen. It is intensely frustrating to watch this all play out. If Google makes good on its threats, and also blocks, i t will be even worse. #C18 #Meta #Facebook #cdnpoli #TRCM #SenateofCanada #Google

  30. @AmeliasBrain @HyL Thank you. That's what I was about to explain. The Senate Transportation and Communications Committee deals with transportation that is federally regulated: so airports and airlines, railways, ports, etc. Municipal roadways, provincial highways, bike lanes, are not n our ambit. HOWEVER....I have also launched a Senate inquiry into federal/municipal relations which tries to deal, among other things, with federal infrastructure funding for municipalities. #TRCM #SenateofCanada

  31. Did you know that the Nav Canada area control Centre at the Edmonton International Airport is responsible for the largest chunk of air space in North America, and the second largest in the world? Air traffic controllers in Edmonton are responsible for guiding air traffic, local, regional and international, above Yukon, NWT, Nunavut, and much of northern BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, plus all of Alberta. From little float planes to giant jets. (And Santa’s sleigh.) #yeg #Edmonton #Canada #TRCM

  32. Yesterday, I had the privilege & thrill of visiting the Edmonton International Airport tower and the Nav Canada control centre, in my capacity as a member of Standing Senate Committee on Transportation and Communications. 37. Hm. My boost button wouldn’t work. But have I accidentally found a way to quote-toot? Well. Here is an interesting piece about rail in Canada I wanted to share. blackrocks.social/@GarlicBreat #rail #trains #Canada #TRCM

  38. I also care in all kinds of crazy ways about communications policy. I have an MA in Communication from #Stanford, and I spent 30 years as a working journalist, with the #CBC and #Postmedia among others. As a member the Transportation and Communications committee (aka #TRCM) I work on comms policy of all sorts, including the controversial #C11 #C18 and the issues involving #Meta #Facebook #Google #Alphabet etc. So if you are a comms policy wonk, please let's connect! #introduction #journalism

  39. I am also a member of the Standing Senate Committee on Transportation and Communications. So I care about transportation policy - whether we're talking about #trains #ports #airports #airtravel #ferries #PassengerRail #highspeedrail #SupplyChain etc. I post about such things - and I'm eager to connect with experts - and with those who are just passionate about transportation policy. (Also? Love trains.) #introduction #SenateofCanada #Canada #TRCM But that's not all!

  40. What happens to the Canadian news media - and to Canadians who are interested in the news - if Facebook and Google make good on their threats, and stop sharing news links? And what would that mean for Bill C-18? I had some tough questions for Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez in committee Wednesday night. It was what you might call a lively exchange! 41. Some big breaking news re Bill C-18. Meta will be testing out its protocols to block Canadians from sharing news on Facebook & Instagram. 43. I must admit that I thought this was obvious. If you stop linking to news due to Bill C-18, you stop the existing deals too.

  44. We also voted today to invite Canadian airlines, VIA Rail, the minister of transportation and other key parties to discuss the service crises that still face our transportation industry.
