All of this was both #predictable, and #predicted. From the moment C-18 was announced, it was obvious to many, many people that this would have exactly these negative effects on #Canadian #publishers/#sites.
But no-one listened. In fact, most of them still refuse to listen.
I'm tired of #politicians preening for the cameras without a care in the world for the #consequences of their actions - which mainly fall on others, not them.

#Clarification: there is no #legal #dispute involved here.
The #Canadian #government passed bill #C18, which says #Facebook, #Google, et al must #pay to #link to Canadian news stories.
It is now the law of the land. So companies have a choice: continue linking to Canadian news sites and pay for the privilege, or stop linking to Canadian news sites.
There is no third option.
A link tax makes zero #economic sense, so they chose option 2. Blame politicians, not the companies.

#News content makes users of #Facebook and #Instagram less happy. And when users click the link, they are gone. Meta wants to maximize time spent with Meta (to sell more #ads), not send users to other pages.
News lobbyists misunderstood the value of news for Meta. The government believed the lobbyists. The result is a disaster.
