  1. So the #artist Alexander #Calder (known for his mobiles) apparently also liked the #circus and designed a series of small circus acts (sword swallower, belly dancer, lion tamer, trapeze artists, elephants…) out of wire, wood, fabric and other materials. He then invited friends over to watch the show. His wife Louisa was in charge of background music on the record player. m.youtube.com/watch?v=t6jwnu8I

I particularly liked the #linocut poster for his circus. Exhibited at the #FondationLouisVuitton.

  2. A Landmark Calder Exhibition Goes on View in Paris

In 1956, Alexander Calder made a cake for his mother’s 93rd birthday. Cute and round with a candle…

  4. This morning we drove to #Woodend.

It was about 10.30 or so.

To my surprise we saw 5 #mobs of #kangaroos along the #Calder.

A bit late for them to be about & in such numbers.

  6. I spent a fun & fascinating morning at CN’s Walker Yard, in Edmonton’s Calder neighbourhood, the busiest rail yard in Canada. At harvest time, they routinely handle 6000-7000 cars a day. Their engine shop can service up to 27 locomotives. #TRCM #CN #Edmonton #yeg #Calder #trains #rail #SenateofCanada

And how you'll never belong here

  9. Sometimes the morning came too soon
Sometimes the day could be so hot
There was so much work left to do
But so much You’d already done

Today, those resurfaced portions are #melting!

    Seriously! #heat

  11. #OTD Birthday of William M. #Calder III (1932-2022), Classicist and historian of Classical scholarship, my American ex boss and a great friend. dbcs.rutgers.edu/all-scholars/ (the birthday date given in Rutgers’s database is erroneous)

  12. This Friday's art appreciation moment is a Calder mobile as shown in the DiDonna Gallery, NYC, in an exhibit that combined works from Calder with Klee. #art #artist #Calder #Klee #mobiles #gallery #nyc

  13. The museum has an incredible collection from the XV century to modern times, with production from Calder, Robert Delaunay, Le Corbusier, and others. Styles evolve, the technique stays the same.

  14. #SomethingBeautiful #Seattle Archive- #Calder fish mobile at the #SeattleArtMuseum. The care taken to be sure there was no air movement and the diligence required to be sure no one touched the pieces seemed odd for a show of #Kinetic art. #Mobiles #KineticSculpture #Fish.

  16. Funny the things that can remind you of home. This work seemed weirdly familiar- as it turns out, it is by Alexander Calder ("Reims, Croix du Sud"). Another work of his- aptly named "Pittsburgh"- hung in the Carnegie Museam in Pittsburgh before moving to the Pittsburgh airport. I didn't pay much attention to art growing up, but this made its way into my subconcious... calder.org/works/hanging-mobil

  17. Brilliant exhibition of Alexander Calder kinetic sculptures, wire works and paintings at Serralves in Porto.

Calder's work is shown together with some by his great friend Joan Miro.

I've never seen his wirework pieces before. How the viewers movement changes their form is... wonderfully cubist.

    This one dates from 1929.

#Calder’s #Circus is a toy-size mechanical circus created by #sculptor #AlexanderCalder (1898–1976). The whimsical sculpture consists of more than 70 miniature figures and animals, as well as almost 100 accessories, all made with wire, wood, metal, cloth, cork, fabric, and string. In this #Tate #Kids #animation, figures and shapes pay homage to Calder’s signature Circus.
