Fun fact for folks who might not be familiar with Canadian political structures (some Canadians might not know this either!): The Territories, including Yukon, NWT, and Iqaluit have non-partisan legislatures, ie. members are traditionally independent, not affiliated with any party, much like municipal politics in Canada.
The Northwest Territories are due to have an election this fall but it looks like the election might get postponed as the majority of the population is evacuated from their places of residence. Also, I believe the Premier of the Territory is voted by and from the MLAs that are elected.

One of my wonderful sisters-in-law, who is with the ATA, spent the whole weekend, working with my other sister-in-law, to set up an apartment for evacuee teachers fleeing the #NWTfires. I am helping them out where I can, buying groceries, lending spare dishes and bedding, providing some books and DVDs. Yellowknife, capital of #NWT, is being evacuated at this hour because of a massive #wildfire on its doorstep. Enterprise, NWT suffered 90% damage by fire. Hay River is without telecomm. services as fire threatens that community. #Canada has experienced >5500 wildfires this year, burning over 13 M hectares; 6x the annual average, and fire season's not over yet!
The cost to mitigate the effects of #ClimateChange is high. The cost of doing nothing is much, much higher.

Due to the spreading wildfire, the NWT government has issued an evacuation order for the City of Yellowknife, telling residents to leave by noon on Friday.
As of 8:00pm EDT, the wildfire is 17km from the city, posing a major risk to safety.
The evacuation would be done in a phased approach over 2 days. Airlifts will start 1:00pm on Thursday for those who can't evacuate via roads.

For folks not familiar, it's a 15-hour drive (if you're lucky) from #Yellowknife to St. Albert, just outside of Edmonton, where the closest reception centre is.
It's trees for hundreds of kilometres.

Yellowknife is about to burn.
An entire Territorial Capital is being evacuated this week, and right-wing govs in Canada are bulldozing the Greenbelt, interfering in the free market's evolution to green energy to force us to keep oil and gas, and are calling to defund the CBC, currently our only national news with any on-the-ground presence in these crisis areas, in favour of standing with billionaire oligarchs like Google and Meta as they block our ability to communicate crisis info.

Everyone has to be out by Friday at noon MDT. At least 5000 evacuees will arrive in #yyc. Flights start at 1 pm Thursday. Yellowknife Hospital is closing units and negotiating medivac flights with SK, AB, and BC… whoever can take patients.
