  1. The Rail Corporations got what they wanted. The Government asked the Labour Board to impose binding arbitration which is exactly what the Unions were fighting against because it will very likely mean further erosion of workers safety and work conditions.

Canada: 21st century home of 19th century rail tycoon monopolies.

  3. OK, I take it back, the CBC’s is still a poorly written article that unfairly makes it sound like the workers were on strike. Compare the first two paragraphs from the current CBC article versus the current BBC article on the issue.

"Employees at one of Canada's two largest railways will return to work on Friday, partially ending an unprecedented work stoppage after intervention by the federal government.

Canada moved on Thursday to end the brief stoppage, which saw Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) lock out some 9,300 workers after failing to clinch a deal with the Teamsters union.

The Canadian labour minister asked the federal industrial relations board to impose binding arbitration on the parties
CN said operations would resume on Friday. CPKC said it was preparing to restart operations but that timing was pending.”

"The Teamsters union has served Canadian National Railway (CN) with a 72-hour strike notice, hours after saying it was taking down picket lines and its workers were returning to the job.

The strike notice was issued Friday morning just after 11 a.m.

The work stoppage at Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) also continues pending an order from the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB).

Following months of increasingly fraught contract talks, Canada's two biggest railways both locked out workers after failing to reach deals with the union by a Thursday deadline.”

  5. A better article on the stoppage than CBC had before.

The previous made it sound like the workers had stopped the trains, when it was actually the two companies in tandem locking out the employees at the same time. That has never been done before.

Only now are the #Teamsters at #CNRail putting in their 72hr strike notice. The Teamsters at #CPKC already have done that but have not actually launched a strike.

  7. Solidarity ✊ with Teamsters Canada. The government of Canada has effectively sided with the companies who want to make the rail industry even less safe. Lac Mégantic, Lytton, how many more disasters will it take before workers and communities come before corporate profit?

  9. Parliament is currently on summer break, so if the minority government were to introduce back to work legislation, they would need to recall the House of Commons and find support for such a bill from one of the opposition parties.

    Liberals: No action planned
NDP: Won't support Legislation or Arbitration
    Bloc: Won't support
    Con: Nothing so far

  10. This week, Air Canada cancelled many of its Calgary flights. (Edmonton & Ottawa lost AC and WestJet flights.) One excuse the airlines used was a pilot shortage. Is the pilot shortage real? What is driving it? Here, hot off the digital presses, is my new column for Alberta Views on the skilled labour shortages bedeviling our entire transportation sector. albertaviews.ca/not-enough-pil #AirCanada #WestJet #CN #CPKC #Porter #pilots #TransportCanada #TRCM #SenateofCanada #Canada #Calgary #yyc #yeg #yow
